Lots of odd comments I want to address here. This isn't an OGL video it's about how I have always loved DCC, and wanted to share that. With the OGL controversy you might want to try a different fantasy based RPG and I thought I'd point out this one. If you want to still play d&d go ahead. I am in no way trying to get people to "jump ship" or create infighting. I enjoy both, as of 01/2023 I'm running a 5e and DCC game weekly. They can exist side by side. Be Excellent to Each Other.

DCC is probably the best tutorial into OSR style gaming in a way bc they really show you how just bc you have two warriors or wizards doesnt mean they have to be even remotely the same. Also mighty deeds is the greatest thing ever probably. Also there is a level 8 module and the new Crypt of the Devil Lich is the only 7th level. Which is pretty perfect bc by level 9 or 10 the characters have probably set in motion a ton of things to worry about

Also worth mentioning. Its fairly easy to reskin DCC to the edition of D&D you are used to if you want to make use of the tonnes of material they have in the form of Adventure Modules. You may think that's besides the point. But as a DM sometimes you want an offbeat module for a one shot with just a little bit of prep. These modules are perfect for it.

I just started a DCC campaign. Loving it so far. The adventures are small and actually digestible. My players seem to be having a good time with a less procedural, more cinematic approach to gaming, and of course, the wacky weirdness that ensues. Found out about this game because of you and absolutely loving it! Plus, lvl 0 stuff is so easy to run and straightforward.

Horray for more Dungeon Crawl Classics News! For what it’s worth here are 2 things I would add: DCC tends to have a much higher mortality rate. If you have players who buy custom dice and make a campaign scrapbook for their character….they might not like DCC unless they make a campaign “yearbook” instead of “scrapbook”. On my DCC discord I made a “hall of heros” for dead PC’s so they can be remembered. 2:) DCC is made under the premise that characters are created more at random than by choosing carefully selected perks for optimizing. If you have “power building” players who enjoy that aspect, you are going to have to tell them to embrace the RNG. A person playing a wizard might be turned off if you don’t let them know their spells are going to be randomly chosen! On the DM side of things: the game has some of the more colorful and evocative rolling tables to decide outcomes. The artwork is inspiring and the published modules lean into the nuttiness of classic dungeon games. Their writers are unapologetically gonzo and it’s fantastic.

Sailors on the Starless Sea is the ultimate funnel adventure, it's pretty much legendary in OSR now. You probably won't have a great time if TTRPGs are kind of a way to act out your OCs (which I also enjoy!) but if you're totally happy playing a bunch of dung age peasants getting merked in a thrash metal demon keep, then I cannot recommend it enough Also weirdly I'd suggest also playing old roguelikes such as dungeon crawl stone soup, nethack or ADOM or something. They can be a little complicated as games go and you die a lot but they can be seriously addicting and that's the exact feeling I get playing OSR systems like DCC

I love DCC so much. It's still kind of shocking to me that I do, as it's very, very much not the sort of thing I'm normally into. I have never enjoyed D&D, for example. I tend to like rules-lite, heavy roleplaying game (Over the Edge, Year Zero Engine games, etc.) or skill-based games like Call of Cthulhu. Yet, DCC works for me like pretty much no other class-based game does. And it captures a vibe. Great stuff.

Even in light of WotC's... recent decisions, I've never been one much for other systems; but this is one I've looked into even before all this. I've never played it, but it seems good; it's a little like D&D Basic from the TSR days. Of course, that's because it's MEANT to be a throwback. The way spells work seems to be a bit wonky, but I wouldn't mind giving it a try.

DCC is just the best. 5E is really a superhero RPG. You will never feel as alive as when you play a zero level funnel. Honestly for people who want to run 'builds' this is not the game for you. But after gaming for 30 years that is a phase everyone goes through, you'll get past that and go back to making a group story. Oh yes there are alot of adventures, and they are like $10, as opposed to wotc $80 hardbacks.

And I am not a big fan of digital versions at the table either. I wish they would release a splitted version, maybe one part rules, one part spells. Dungeon crawl classics is great. I like how they do magic. You don't have slots. You just cast until you lose the spell through a poor roll for wizards. Poor rolls for clerics gives divine ire from the gods, and eventually, you can't cast anymore from your God being mad. It's pretty funny. Arcane magic is wild man. Be careful. Practice safe magic.

I’d argue DCC’s craziness enables roleplay and “arcs” better than some other RPGs. The cleric disapproval system is a great example of that, I think.

"If you're interested in an alternative RPG give this a shot." "If you're interested in role playing this might not be for you." I've heard enough about this game by now to know it isn't a role playing game, but rather a modified war game like D&D. So it's kind of baffling to try to pitch it as an RPG and then turn around and say it's just not one. Not as baffling as the fact that the rulebook has "role playing game" on the cover when apparently the entire game is just about randomly rolling for wacky results on a table and people's characters dying every other turn, but still bizarre.

But you take on the role of a character. Theatre of the mind all the way. DCC presents no more or less roleplay options than DnD 5e. If you want tools for better roleplay there are games that provide that. Emphasizing role playing instead of combat.

I disagree that DCC cant be good for a campaign. Id argue the classes are more interesting than other systems you can tell a fantastic long lasting story you just have to accept what everyone in the OSR knows(Magic is deadly powerful and dangerous and the world is full of weird and mystery) Beyond that this has just as much long term campaign capability as any other game.

Man, I must've gotten a rotten first experience with DCC. Played a 0-level character funnel at a con. Each of the 6 players had 4 characters (24 characters total), who all randomly died when the GM rolled a die just to "see who dies this round.) And we also had worthless characters - fighters with 4 Str and magic user types with 5 Int. Because ability scores are random and so are classes. It was one of the worst games I played in 30+ years in the hobby.

I mean this is just how a funnel works, your characters die and the winners get to go on to more adventures, but your DM sounds like they're playing DCC wrong. Nobody's using magic at level 0, and 4 Strength and 5 Intelligence sounds like they're not doing the standard character rolls properly so are distributed too low

@@ILoveEvadingTax yeah, but the characters were just killed randomly. Had nothing to do with character choices. Just rolled dice and said "your character is dead." So my "good characters" who I would've played more cautiously were just killed randomly.

I started with Basic and stuck with AD&D for years. Decades later I played 5e for a couple of years, just watched it grow into a table top video game where players are supported by rules to not be careful of their actions and expect to be fine. I played to level 5, then DM'd. Sit your anime character down for an hour and be fine. Like a previous save in video game. AD&D was f'n cool to have a PC that you earned its survival and ground out that xp to level up. 5e video gamers with their picachu furries expect to just gain levels and engage in soap opera stuff. I might do DCC because I love the adventure roleplaying that was D&D.

Well for one multiple gaming companies have had to build an entirely new open license consortium so it's not exactly inconsequential drama, but it depends, really. Do I think D&D will remain the most popular RPG for the forseeable? Sure. Do I think over the long term it will suffer because third party creators will be turned off by a clause that allows for Wizards to steal their content? Well, how could it not suffer as a result?
