DUNE: WAR FOR ARRAKIS REVIEW (Spice... For a Price)

Ойындар

Dune: War for Arrakis, published by Cool Mini or Not and designed by two of the great minds behind the elaborate board game War of the Ring, which has become a modern classic since its release back in 2004, is here at last after making a bundle of money on Kickstarter.
Unfortunately, Zendaya isn't in it. And neither is Timothee Chalamet. BUT LOOK! A SAND WORM OMG SHAI HULUUUUUDDDD
This thing is as large as a sand worm and positively bloated with miniatures and custom dice, so of course Jarom's doing his best to convey to you the general aspects of the experience you may have while playing it, and of course he isn't going to cover EVERYTHING, just the stuff he thought you really might want to know about. We hope you find this video informative and entertaining!

    It has a steep learning curve, but it's quite intuitive once you've played it once or twice (it has that in common with Wonderland's War, for example). It's my current favourite game, having played it 8 times with the missus (Harkonnen: 4, Atreides: 4). We also play a lot of 2P Ankh, Kemet, and Blood Rage, and my missus thinks it's no more complicated than Ankh+Pharoah expansion. It's well within her complexity tolerance (whereas, for instance, Frosthaven is well beyond it (but not Gloomhaven), as is War of the Ring). I also like that because its first and foremost a 2P game, you get the full experience at that player count (unlike, for example, Kemet, where you're only playing with a fraction of the board at 2P).

    I've played the game and thought it engaging. As a fan of the recent movies, this was like rewatching them only more interactively.

    Seems like it might be a heavy lift for anyone not too enamored by the theme. I'll wait for the Krusty Krab/Chum Bucket retheme.

    Ok, I know this is a joke... but I would lowkey buy that 😂😂😂 only if it included a glow-in-the-dark Davy Jones mini, of course.

    Because I’ve played the game; I became interested in reading the book. The game was so fun and I loved finding the connections between the book and the game. I’d love to play the game again!

    This is an amazing game! It is not for light gamers, but if you can handle a heavier game it is very fun.

    Excellent review. I like the way you present the game. Thank you. It was the price that put me off this game. Fortunately, I had some reward points I used, and I was able to get the game and the Spacing Guild Expansion for just slightly less than the base game. I am NOT disappointed.

    Oof, that's a tricky question, he moves around a lot. I hear he likes suspension bridges and the sorrow-laden dreams of poets, so those might be good places to start looking. Apparently he's willing to give 'em away if you manage to find him and beat him at mancala (he's a big mancala guy)

    Is it any good with four players?

  • @JumbleAndGaff

    @JumbleAndGaff

    I'd love to hear what others have to say about this-- I've been able to clock a few 3-4 player sessions since completing this video, and personally, I think it's a lot of fun. To do it, you split players into teams, with each person controlling one faction. This arrangement brings about some great opportunities for teamwork, and managing 1 faction tends to be less daunting of a prospect for new players. The variant also has a 'cone of silence'-type mechanic in it that's actually hilarious: if a team wants to converse without the other team eavesdropping, they have to spend a token that allows them to physically leave the room and chat strategy out of earshot. Each side starts with a finite number of tokens, so those opportunities are precious! Generally, if I want to *compete*, I go with the two player experience. If I'm looking for something more casual or introducing the game to new people, the 3-4 player version tends to be a pretty great option.
