Considering this is an extremely difficult fictional martial art to translate vividly on-screen, I believe they did the best job possible.

I've been doing martial arts since the 80s, I found the fight-scenes in this movie to be stressful to watch because the characters were introduced well, before being put in danger. Every second of the action meant something to the story. If the assignment was to show how people move, think and act after a life of training deadly techniques, then it was perfectly executed and merged perfectly into the drama of the story.

I like the way they actually considered how shields that can only be penetrated by slow objects would change combat. polearms, meant for big brutal strikes, would be ineffective in this scenario. you need precision strikes, so a shorter blade is better. and there is a lot of grappling involved, it's not something you'd see much in the real world, but with shields slapping away a blade with your hand is a perfectly reasonable move. and they considered all that, and they figured out a fighting style for it. as a result, the combat scenes are great. you see it play out, and you think, if there really was this technology, then this way of fighting makes sense. it's this kind of consistency that makes a worldbuilding feel real

  • @squamish4244

Herbert really wanted to show a true 'feudal future' in Dune, and coming up with the idea for shields was brilliant. A medieval swordfighting expert on YT (HEMA - historical European martial arts) discussed the film and said that if shields existed, knives would be far better than swords or any other melee combat weapon.

The personal shields are also the reason that martial arts make a comeback and become important in the Dune universe. "The slow blade penetrates the shield". Projectile weapons are utterly useless against personal shields, so everything from railguns to slings and arrows are off the table. Bludgeoning weapons and fists are also useless, because they rely on a level of transferred kinetic energy the shield won't allow to occur. A directed *energy* weapon, like a laser, will cause the shield to explosively discharge, possibly killing the shielded person (very likely if it's a powerful laser) but also very likely killing the person firing the weapon and converting the shielded person into a rather large bomb. Using an atomic weapon against a shield is an utter horror-show, as the interaction makes local physics do something similar to what intestines do after you eat at Taco Bell. So grappling, cutting blades, and poisons become the primary tools of close combat, and close combat becomes preferable to other forms (you can strafe from the air -- would you rather use lasers and risk blowing your own planes out of the air if they're shielded, or use guns and missiles and risk wasting them if they're shielded? The same applies to artillery.) Subterfuge and sabotage become the most effective siege weapons, and serious combat returns to face to face savage bloodletting channeled by the evolution of high technology.

If no one else mentions it, I think Josh Brolin is perfect as Gurney Halleck. His age, his aggressive nature, his underhand style of humour reflects the Gurney of the novel. The fact he ran through this training scene in one shot at the age of 55 is a great reminder of the rigours of fighting and survival in the Imperium. I just wish he was more prominent in the throne room scene in Dune 2 where he catches the attention of the Emperor's Sardauker "Only the Atreides could command the loyalty of Gurney Halleck."

It's excellently done in this "duel" because they followed the rule that only a slow blade penetrates the shield, it's jus a shame when Duncan is hacking and slashing through Sardaukar later in the film they completely disregard it

@@sathwikmatcha5511oh so that's why they don't use it, in the second movie at some point someone was asked not to use the shield but they never explained why. I thought it was because they were out in the open and someone from far away could have lasered them (which apparently causes huge explosions)
