DUNE PART 2 Ending: What Will Happen In Dune Messiah?

Ойын-сауық

Dune Part 2 ending and what will happen in Dune Messiah? In this video essay, I discuss the ending of Denis Villeneuve's Dune Part 2 and how it sets up Dune Messiah. The ending scene with Paul Atreides as the new Emperor and Chani leaving, sets up a Dune Messiah movie in an interesting way. There are heavy spoilers in this video.
Paul Atreides leads nomadic tribes in a battle to control the desert planet Arrakis. Dune is an upcoming epic science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve with a screenplay by Jon Spaihts, Villeneuve, and Eric Roth. The film is an international co-production of Canada, Hungary, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It is the first of a planned two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel of the same name by Frank Herbert, which will cover roughly the first half of the book. The film stars an ensemble cast including Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem.

Here's my video talking about how the ending of Dune Part 2 could lead into Dune Messiah. How do you think Denis Villeneuve will go about it and do you think we'll see the holy war at the start of the next film?

I just watched it yesterday and although I don't think this is the best of Villeneuve's movies or the best Sci fi in years I still can't wrap my head around how they achieved this. Definitely a modern classic. Thanks for all the hard work you put in covering it. Greetings from Poland!

I do think Villeneuve will spend some time depicting the Holy War. He has shown he is well aware people want to see action, and despite Herbert skipping most of the details, it isn't out of place to show it. I also wonder if the movie will start directly after pt 2 just like this one started directly after pt 1.

Dune's Messiah is a good read, but to make it work on the big screen in a way that pleases movie audiences there will have to be significant changes. This might piss off book purists, but I don't think being mostly faithful to the 2nd novel would produce a satisfactory third film. As written, Messiah doesn't have anything close to the action that Dune has, as it's mostly intrigue and shady plots from unsavory characters against a hero who lost his luster. Making a successful Dune Messiah film faithful to Herbert's themes but adding significant action scenes will be a difficult challenge for Villeneuve, but it sounds like he has a vision for it. I'm looking forward to seeing how he will approach it, and I hope he succeeds in making it work.

Keep in mind that the children of dune miniseries in 2003 did adapt Messiah and Children of Dune quite well. I get that it's different for the movie format. I think the change is necessary though because if the 3rd Dune movie is the last, then they have to wrap up the story. There are 6 books written by Frank Herbert. If you tried to adapt them all to a movie, you'd lose the audience. Book 4 becomes weird as hell, and it onky gets worse in 5 and 6.

I'd imagine the easiest way to have action would be to move the story's events to earlier on in the jihad, so there can be scenes of the fremen genociding/subduing planets etc. One of the aspects of the book I found disappointing was the lack of insight into the events of the jihad, other than the statistics

I think changing is already pregnant when she left Paul to go back to the desert, if the first scene of messiah isnt him stopping her getting on the worm, all bets are off and we will see vast changes to both approach and structure I think a good approach would be to have the twins talk to her in the womb as she's about to do the jump, stopping her in her tracks.. but that might be a bit wild for some to process, idek how Aliya gained sentience BEFORE Jessica invested the sandworm sizzurp so who even knows (Jessica could've been lying to/manipulating Paul mind you, as we don't SEE Aliya speaking till AFTER Jessica undergoes spice agonies) Either way it's gonna be crazy, as well as for logic streamlining reasons I think Denis made things this way so no one would have a clue what direction he would take with Messiah, other than Duncan's gola returning and Paul walking off blind into the desert being the final scene of the movie, we have NO CLUE as to the scope or dynamic of Messiah

It's seeming more likely that Denis won't do the big timeskip. This helps in him getting to actually show some of the holy war and also keeps Paul young so Timmy's youthful looks won't be a big issue. Also I don't think Chani will go against Paul. As he states that she will come to understand. That would be too big a divergence even for Denis. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if she's pregnant since part 3 will pick up where part 2 leaves off. Another thought I had is that Chani leaving eliminates the need to have Irulan poison her slowly with contraceptives. There could be a story where Irulan and the BG try to eliminate Paul and Chani's unborn children. Idk. Lots of possibilities. As someone who's read the books it's kinda exciting not knowing exactly what will happen next.

I thought the same. I think chani is prob pregnant and the focus is on Irulan administering abortives, not contraceptives. Bc the conspiracy is still very much about eliminating that atreides bloodline (see conversation between Mohaim and Irulan when Mohaim is imprisoned in the book). Chani is such a central aspect of Paul's fears and motivations in Messiah that I don't see their relationship being substantially altered. I agree that Denis wouldn't diverge that far. As long as we get a full Anya Alia performance and a good Bijaz and Scytale and Edric, and the same design and effects teams and Zimmer, he can change whatever he wants to to make it work as a huge epic movie. Messiah is even more unadaptable than the original in some ways. I am concerned he hasn’t even introduced the Navigators or the Tlielaxu at all yet so that’s a lot of exposition to get through quickly during Alia’s opening monologue …. Fingers crossed for one last awesome Dune film. Part Two outdid Part One, and if Messiah outdoes Part Two then Denis is truly the Lisan al-Gaib

We can expect three things: Chanis twins Duncan's return Paul wandering blind into the desert being the final act/final scene Everything else inbetween being up for grabs is both exciting and terrifying, whatever the case this will be the most ANTI-star wars trilogy in the history of cinema. It's rather ironic and perhaps kismet that the film that plagiarised most from DUNE, a dark tragedy of unimaginable scale complexity and nuance, also invented the modern simplistic feel good campbellian blockbuster formula, Hell the three act sequel where the finale ends on high and triumphant note is intrinsically tied to star wars So how fitting, especially in these times of filmic uncertainty and box office malaise, that DUNE.. the progenitor herself should be what marks an end to the reign of the formulaic block buster. For sure. I trust DV to wrap up his trilogy in a compelling way that uses elements of Messiah and Children of Dune even but doesn't stick to them like they are Scripture. Maybe his trilogy ends with Paul walking off into the desert alone, giving up his throne, Chani (as de facto leader of the fremen) overseeing the terraforming of Arrakis into a true paradise. Alia? Hmm, she could be left as Empress but curious how she and Paul and Chani's children will end up at the end of Part 3, but yes I think DV's trilogy will stay focused mostly on Paul and Chani and the fate of Arrakis, and that's for the best....@@ewarrior9776

Based on what I've seen in the second film I'd say that Messiah will go like this: Chani and Paul's relationship is fractious and fraught with mistrust and anger. Irulan still conspires against Paul and Chani as she receives no love or children from Paul and is pushed by Mohiam etc to eliminate the Atriedes bloodline. Irulan will slip Chani contraceptives etc that Chani will knowingly take to spite Paul, who is ironically allowing this to happen. These measures will fail as Paul confesses his desire to walk away from the throne thus reconciling the relationship between Chani and Paul. Chani will stop taking contraceptives and fall pregnant/die in childbirth at the end as Paul walks into the desert.

Love this and think your predictions make sense. (Book spoilers below, of course) I don't think Chani will be an adversary to Paul, as some predict. I read the final scene in Part 2 as Chani not hating Paul, but as her being devastated, angry, anguished, and confused precisely because she loves Paul and hates what is happening. Even when we see the fight scene, Chani is still concerned about Paul. She's overwhelmed that he gets stabbed and might die. It's a complex thing. They have a nuanced and complicated love, which I think is how things will continue in the next film. I also think her character needs to be close to Paul, not only to sort of track the book, but also to continue serving as the moral center of the film. I also think Film-Messiah will pay off (1) the fact that Paul said, "She will come to understand. I've seen it." and (2) "I will love you as long as I breathe." And (3) the blue scarf, which in “Art and Soul of Dune: Part Two” is explained to represent love in Fremen culture (it is telling that Chani still wears it at the end, albeit on her arm). Those things can be played in so many ways, but I think Denis will choose to play them in a way that is close to the text, given his love for it (he has said Messiah is his favorite). So, I think this means we get to see her "come to understand" quite early, and we also get to see some of the love again. (Narrow possibility that she might even be pregnant with the twins as Dune Part 2 ends, and perhaps that is what triggers their reunion). I don't think we are going to have a 12 year time-jump. I like your point about the flash forward putting adult Alia well into the future. I honestly think Alia is going to be approached entirely differently, perhaps as a toddler as she is in the first book. I think Hayt's character's interactions will focus on Paul (not Alia).

I hope what Denis does with Dune 3/Messiah is what he did with Part Two and shortens the gap of time and shows us incremental scenes that allows us as viewers to experience the growth/development/degredation of these characters in little snipets, hopefully for the first hour or so. And then, he goes straight into Messiah mode for the rest of the runtime. I thought the pacing of Part 2 was quite exceptional considering the time skipping, and it wasn't jarring at all thanks to how much they showed us in those increments. It wasnt too much information, and it wasnt too little, and you could feel Paul's development with the Fremen very very well for that first hour of the film. I trust Denis is going to deliver a very satisfying conclusion, even if, at this point, it will most likely really diverge from the second book past this point. But it'll serve the adaptation really well. And he tackled the main themes of the first book so perfectly that I trust he will only continue to keep the story very faithful in spirit. These two movies have given me such a facination and a longing for sci-fi with such depth, so I'm fully on board with whatever he's got. And Part 2 has a wealth of rewatchablity that I think I can hold over for a few years while Part 3/Messiah is being produced.

The woman he was following in the vision was Alia not Jessica. Chani will “come to understand” by pt 3 as Paul specifically said he had foreseen after taking the WOL. My guess is that. Chani will be his love interest again in 3, but her role will be more of the conscience of Paul for the audience rather than leaving it up to internal thoughts and whatnot. I don’t think she will be against him like Korba. I think the end will probably play out mostly the same as the book; with her death being the final catalyst to him to walk away into the desert. I think that, poetically, Villeneuve plans to end each movie with a journey into the deep desert. Paul and Jessica with Stilgar’s troop in pt 1, Chani in pt2, and Paul in pt 3.

@CortexVideos I love your coverage. I also think you missed the ambiguity in the final scene. Denis suggested that Chani will leave with strong visual language and action, but we don't actually see her get on the worm. Dune Messiah could begin with her walking straight back, angry with herself but beholden to her Fedaykin self. Everyone seems to be overlooking that Chani doesn't actually go through with her intent. Sure she may, but it's equally possible that she may not.😢

@@CortexVideos that's true 👍 i think your analysis of what Denis is trying to say is spot on and not at all what i'm seeing elsewhere. I also think what I'm noticing is that most reviewers/analysts are drawing a conclusion where it's only a possibility ("chani was about to get on the worm, so of course she gets on the worm and this upsets the novel because she spends some amount of time away" yadda yadda). i'm interested in what happens if she doesn't ride away. Fedaykin go where they are led, not for the leader, but for their people. what conflict does it put Chani in if she turns around in the next moment? imagine the emotion of it... i love imagining the "what if" lol it's clear you do too lol but hey, ya heard me rant and i have no criticisms of your work 😅 keep up the good work, and thanks for the engagement!

I have my doubts about all this, unless Messiah is divided into a DUNE part 4. Dune Messiah (book) starts a decade into the future. Alya is 16 years old in Messiah and we see her in Paul's vision in DUNE 2. One of the things that bugged me about DUNE 2 is that it took place over months instead of 4-5 years. Alya is supposed to be 4 years old by the End of Dune 2, which makes her 16 in Messiah. Paul and Chani had Leto I, who died by an imperial raid on their seiche. I liked that Denise made Chani more skeptical against the prophecy. It more matches her parent Leit Kynes. But making her so rebelious throughout the movie made her too linear and was too much of a cookie-cutter approach to her character. She might believe the prophecy is fake, however, watching paul predict future patterns, watching him survive the water of life (which no man has ever done!), watching him exercise the powers of the Kwisatz Haderach is going to crack a lot of her skepticism on Paul as un-earthy in his capabilities. She might embrace him or fear him. But she is not going to be the same Chani from the start of DUne 2 to the end. Even her father (or mother in this case) Liet Kynes was shifting in belief.

Brilliant thoughts on how Villeneuve will adapt Messiah! I’ve had a chance to watch Dune Part Two a few times today and in my review noted it was a beautiful movie, it truly is. As a preamble to my thoughts on the next movie and how it will be adapted, an important note that I gathered on my recent viewing of Part Two is that from the moment Paul drinks the Water of Life, everything he does following this moment is surgical. Now what do I mean by this statement? In a quick flash scene when Paul is with his mother in front of the little maker in the South, Paul sees his hand with his knife giving the lethal blow to Feyd Rautha. Also when he explains how he can the see the narrow way through, my interpretation of this is that in order to reach the point of victory he must do certain decisions to do so. Which is why he accepted the mantle of the Mahdi suddenly after adamantly saying he did not want to travel south because of the fundamentalists. His vision of victory for the Fremen meant that he had to accept the mantle. Although this does still leave some unanswered questions but one in particular is why did he not explain this to Chani? Why did he leave her hurt and filled with rage as shown at the end of Part Two? Paul knew Chani would not simply agree with him talking over but says confidently in Part Two that in the end she will understand and come to see. I think in some way Chani is Paul’s hope to try and stop or at least mitigate the wrath of the Holy War. In the book Paul’s is always trying to stop that horror no matter what, this has not changed so I think Villeneuve will change Chani’s role in Messiah to be essentially Paul’s hope. Paul knew that Chani’s rage at the false prophet would lead her to try and free her people in the end, hence why that ending shot is of Chani’s rage. Perhaps Chani’s role in Messiah will be a different version of Korba’s role in Messiah - a Fremen who betrayed Muad Dib as he did not agree with the world he was creating. For context to those who have not read the book - Korba was a Fedaykin Fremen soldier who attacked Arrakeen with Paul. Ultimately Paul and Chani will make up in the end as they have two children: Leto II and Ghanima. In relation to the conspiracy with the Bene Theilaxu, Reverend Mother and the Guild, I think this will be the major plot point of the story but more so in the middle of the movie. I agree with with you on the beginning of Messiah, Villeneuve will most likely use the beginning to showcase the invasion of planets by the Fremen: Kaitan, Caladan, Giedi Prime etc, to show the true spread of the holy war across that 12 year period (or whatever time period jump Villeneuve uses). Then it will move to that conspiracy to kill Muad Dib. Also, I think a few of us have noticed that in Part 1 what Paul foresaw of him fighting amongst the Fedaykin in his vision turned out to be Chani instead. I think with Paul’s vision with Chani being burned I think it’ll be the same case where vision is not correct there because it’s not Chani that will be burned but him. The reason I mention this is that it is a subtle nod to Paul being blinded by the stone burner in Messiah where Chani in Paul’s vision is burned - this I believe is an indication that Paul’s face will be heavily burned when he is blinded in Messiah. For context to those who have not read Messiah - Paul becomes blinded by a stoneburner explosion - he can still see due to his prescience and the fact he has forseen all the events and where everyone is so through his forsight he can still see. I suspect the time jump will be longer than 12 years, as it was in the book. My only basis for this Anya Taylor Joy as Alia. In the book Alia is about 14/15 but this was because she was born during the time jump in the Dune book before Paul became Emperor so unless they cast another younger actress as Alia they’d need to have a bigger time jump, like 20 years or something. In relation to Lady Jessica, her role has somewhat transformed from protagonist slowly to antagonist given that her mission to prepare and protect Paul has transformed to cause the Holy War. In the book (I think at the Cave of Birds) Paul said that his mother was his enemy, even if she didn’t realise she was because she is directing him to the Holy War. These are my thoughts on Messiah based on deductions from Part Two. Feel free to critique or input what you think what will happen in Messiah! Thanks for taking the time to read :) Long live the FIGHTERS

I suspect Paul will spend much of Messiah trying to avoid Chani death. But will ultimately fail. (Wonder if Gurney will say it's inevitable. ) As Paul moves closer to the agony. He will finally accept his alternative fate, with the birth of his children and realize Leto II will undergo the agony. The open question is will Paul still have children with Chani or maybe change it to Irulan. Switching to Irulan would make the story easier to follow.

Wheel of Time trashed the book world. It's a different story wearing the clothing of Jordan's work. Can barely stand it. Dune is great. The books, and these new movies. Yes, the changes are a little strange, but in the scope it doesn't destroy the story for me. Very much looking forward to more from these guys on the Dune story. I've read Dune and saw some videos about Dune Messiah, but for the film trilogy i would say to compensate for the lack of action in dune messiah it would be interesting to actually include scenes from the holy war that follows during the 12 years after part 2. I saw Dune part two yesterday and while I was enthralled with the characters and the development of the story. The ending was like getting kicked in the stomach. I was a little hurt that Denis Villeneuve altered the source material; I'm hoping that it's in order to make a better Dune Messiah. But we see the consequences of the other great houses refusing to allow Paul to ascend to the throne. In effect setting in motion the Jihad at the hands of the Fremen. I'm hopeful that Denis can navigate the source material and bring Dune Messiah closer to how the events of Messiah are more accurately portrayed. The other thing that I'm seriously hoping for in Messiah is the reunion between Paul and Chani; the ending of Dune Part 2, left a lot hanging. Does Paul and Chani reconcile? How does the sisterhood adapt to losing control of their Kwisatz Haderach? Will the Jihad bring the Fremen to paradise? So many questions in Villeneuve's adaptation have been left hanging. Honestly, I'm praying that Denis can right the ship and bring the stories ending closer to the one that Frank Herbert truly wanted in the first place?

The stakes are much higher now leading into Messiah, it’s a cinematic take of the core ideas of the literature tales we all come to love. Character building through motion pictures fundamentally has to be somewhat different than character building in novels. In addition this is fantastic that we are all discussing these possible outcomes, there’s no intrigue in knowing exactly what’s to come if it’s a straight adaptation from the novels.

But with the way the adaptation of DUNE went I can see them having Alia as the main lead going forward and Paul dying instead of going blind into the desert and later on assassinated. I can see them have Alia have a growth change due to her exposure with the water of life and her early abomination abilities. I can see where Alia kills Paul or Paul takes his life due to what he has done with how Dennis sees it, it should be a very controversial movie where its going to create tons of debates. Paul killed his grandfather and not Alia..the Messiah will be "Alia" and not "Paul".

Despite what people are saying This is not Star Wars , yes While Paul initially seeks to prevent such violence, his actions and the religious fervor surrounding him ultimately lead to the jihad. My opinion is Whether Paul can be considered a villain due to the consequences of the jihad is a matter of interpretation. In the books You can view him as tragic figure whose intentions were noble but whose actions had unintended and devastating consequences. Others may view him as morally culpable for the deaths caused by the jihad. Anyway Paul is a complex character not a Star Wars villain despite people trying to make him so.

Everyone who thinks Chani is coming back to be with Paul needs to watch the film again. It's OVER. She is now the anti-Paul character now. She will one day come to understand why Paul did what he did. But she'll never be with him again. My theory about this divergence from the books is that THIS Paul has made an impossible choice. To give up Chani's love, in order save her from dying in childbirth, at the cost of losing her love for Paul. This is why he is so sad and defeated. And why he has decided to take the water of life... TWO YEARS EARLY. The key to this theory is Jamis. Unique to the films, Paul calls to Jamis for guidance, long after his death. Proving that the Paul we see can glimpse into splinters of time which have been completely closed off to his own timeline. He also sees a future with Chani as his concubine. Which is Chani from the books. Where Paul stays with her in the desert for another two years before taking the water of life. But only after they had a child together, and then lost it. A Chani that would've become faithful to Paul as the Messiah. Radicalized by the death of her son to the Harkonnens. He also has visions of Chani being burnt to death. He knows this is a no-win situation. And he reluctantly makes his choice to save her life. We don't need copium to accept that Chani hates Paul now. Like us, this Paul has read the books too! That's what the movie is about. And now part 3 is a mystery. But the golden path won't be as written.

She'll knowingly take the contraceptives that Irulan is feeding her to spite Paul. She'll reconcile with Paul on her deathbed as he decides to walk away into the desert and give up power. She repeatedly states that she's okay with Paul as long as he doesn't become the Messiah figure. This will be vindicated by the end of Messiah.

@@ethancoster1324Irulan isn't going to feed Chani contraceptives. Because THIS Chani isn't going to be Paul's concubine. She's done with Paul. It's over. Chani is on a COMPLETELY different path now. The anti-Paul Freman figure. Her last words to Paul are "this isn't over yet!" Meaning that she plans to expose him as a fraud. And plans to turn her people away from his leadership. The ending isn't just her leaving Paul. She's abandoning her people. Stilgar. Everyone who follows Paul. She is donezo. It's over. Her timeline has completely splintered from the events of Dune Messiah.

@@ethancoster1324 DV isn't setting up Children of Dune or God Emperor of Dune. He's completing the Paul arc in three parts and that's it. The studios prefer it this way. Now they can make whatever they want. HBO already is. All they care about is a popular IP they can create infinite content for. DV set that up nicely for them by not strictly following the books. We'll see if The Sisterhood/The Prophecy keeps up with the hype. And I'm not despairing. I think it's great! Oh and reconciling as she dies doesn't allow the books to happen. She has to become his concubine for all the events to follow the books. They'd have to reconcile. THEN get pregnant. THEN give birth to the twins. And THEN she'd die.

Honestly didn't like Dune 2 compared to the first. The first felt very immersive, and weirdly the 2nd felt very rushed even though it was 2:45 hours..I would guess because the first Dune didnt cover that much of the book yet and saved it all for the 2nd? I didn’t really believe the relationship between Paul and Chani.. theres like two scenes total that show them liking each other… thats not enough character development for me to care about Chani being bummed out. The Baron is barely in the second one which was a bummer.. he was such a big deal for the first. And like where was Pauls super power in display? That he can tell you your past and future? I was hoping for something epic with his powers he acquired besides telling people to shut up.

Denis Villeneuve nailed dune. Absolutely brilliant. However, I think he should stop here. Dune, as a novel, is a masterpiece. Dune-Messiah as a novel is only okay. Children of Dune is better, but not amazing and God Emperor of Dune is just freaking weird. Point is, the quality of the source material kind of plummets the farther into the novels you get. I think Denis should be proud of his monumental achievement, but leave the Dune universe now and move on to his next project. I just don’t see more Dune movies going well.

The emperor is like a drunk grampa, no opulance or decedence... zero world building, bland set design its flat boring very bland dreary and dull. sure good cinema and cgi as youd expect from money being thrown at it. No spacing guild or Ix. As a huge Dune fan i have no immediate urge to ever watch it again. villeneuve is a great director, but he missed the mark on this adaptation.

This was a poorly told and boring story, and I want my FIVE hours back. It sucked. "Lets NUKE the spice FFS!" What? It's a PLANET WIDE thing ffs. And WHY can't the "spice" just be frickin' BLUE like in the books? !!
