Yeah I know he actually listened to the slow blade penetrates the shield. And he says he doesn't get the movie but this is the most sci-fi, of science fiction and there's a lot to absorb. I think he did a pretty good job with that

I understand the movie..there's just come concept that weren't fully flushed out..but I understand that was intentional after watching...I'm not saying I can't comprehend any of the plots or sub plot points

In this universe, artificial intelligence has long been abolished and outlawed. The guy at the beginning who rolled his eyes up is what’s called a Mentat, basically a human who has been trained to fill the gaps left by complex computers. Similarly to the way spice allows the navigators to navigate fold space, spice expand consciousness and allows for increased mental abilities.

Also, I’m sure this may have been addressed but I forgot to say this in my previous comment, Pauls “visions” are only bits and pieces of possible futures. He isn’t fully prescient yet. Like The Reverend Mother said, his sight is barely awakened. The future is determined by Pauls actions or decisions so not everything he sees will come to pass or may not happen exactly as he sees. For example, his interactions in the film with Jamis, in Pauls visions Jamis is “a friend that will show him the ways of the desert” Ultimately Jamis did show Paul the way of the desert, kill or be killed. So it did come to pass just not exactly like he saw it, because of his choices.

This story came out in '65 in book form. The 1st attempt to make it was in the '70's which involved a slew of creative ppl but was going to be over 12hrs long or so and was never made. David Lynch finished one(wasn't the original director) in '85 which has a cult following.

Paul sees possible futures. The determining factor between what future comes to pass is Paul himself. What weighs heavy on Paul is that he rarely knows what action or speech leads to the better future and what leads to the worse outcome.

What’s cool about the ornithopters is that they could function in real life. However, using ‘real’ physics, the wings would have to be about double the size they are in the movie.

So when they refer to death in this it’s metaphorical. He has to kill his old self to become his new self. The visions are debatable. They could be predict the future, possible futures, be implanted in his mind, or a prophecy set out for him. That’s all part of the discussion of Dune!

Most of the videos that will help flesh out the Dune universe will tell you before they get into their topic if there are spoilers. Quinn's Ideas is my favorite, but Nerd Cookies and The Lorebrarians have great Dune content, too. Doc Sloan's Science Fiction Station does the deepest dive (he's got a literal PhD in Dune!), but his videos are long and tend to be a little dry, so he's not for everyone. Lol There are videos about the Spacing Guild (a huge part of the book that was left out of the movie), the Bene Gesserit, Mentats, the various great houses involved in the story, the life cycle of the worms, spice, the Fremen, and so much more.

No shame in not understanding everything in this movie it is very very dense. One of the most complex tales I had ever read. I read the book when I was about 17 had to reread it a year later and finally got most of it. This is probably one of the most science-fictioniey science fiction and they had to cut a lot to make it into even a two-part movie.

So to help you understand a few things that throw people for a loop, in the Dune universe there was a war against A.I. roughly 10,000 years before the events of this story. The current time in this story is 10,191 AG (After Guild) this refers to the current measure of time after the formation of the spacing guild. In reality it’s more like 20,000. Duncan is a super bad ass because he is a “Ginaz Swordmaster”. A graduate of the best combat school in the known universe. He teaches Paul about the fine art of 1 on 1 combat. Gurney is a former slave and loyal servant of Pauls father, Leto. Gurney is like a general and focuses on large scale unit tactics. Thufir, is a “mentat”. A person who is trained with extreme mental abilities and is basically a human computer. Jessica is a sister of the Bene Gesserit, an order is women that manipulate politics from the shadows. She was basically assigned to Duke Leto as a part of the Bene Gesserit secret breading program and was I struced to have only female children. However she loved Leto and gave him a son instead. Bene Gesserit have almost total body control and can influence their bodily processes like determination of gender for a fetus. They are also extremely deadly fighters. They practice a specific fight style called Prana Bindu. The Fremen called it the “weirding way”. As for the shields, interstellar travel and floating, the6 are all effects of what it called the “Holtzman effect”, a way of manipulating sub atomic particles to produce different results like shields or suspension. Shields will repell any fast moving object like a bullet so kinetic firearms are useless against them, hence slower weapons like swords and blades. Most soldiers use a suspensor unit to float up or down, like the Sardukar did when they floated down into battle. This is the same thing the Baron uses as he is so obese he cannot walk. There is almost no water at all on the surface of Arakkis (sp?) so the whole of Fremen culture is based around the conservation of water. So spitting is seen a sign of respect since you are freely giving away bodily moisture. I hope that helps. 😀
