Dune 2: Rebecca Ferguson Tried and Failed to Get This Bene Gesserit Detail Into Sequel

Ойын-сауық

One of the most mysterious elements of the Dune series is the powerful Bene Gesserit. In Denis Villeneuve's films, actress Rebecca Ferguson is Lady Jessica, the audience's gateway into the superhuman abilities and their shadowy political plays. An acolyte of the faction herself, Jessica defied their teachings and bore a son, Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), who has the makings of the foretold Kwisatz Haderach. In Dune: Part Two, we pick back up on Lady Jessica and Paul's journey into the deserts of Arrakis.
Continuing the first of Frank Herbert's books, Part Two will pick back up with the mother and son after they've united with the Fremen. A war is brewing now that Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac) has been assassinated by the vile Harkonnen family, and the Atreides heir is believed to be dead. With Paul working side-by-side with fighter Chani (Zendaya) and her people, and his mother's teachings, Muad'dib seeks revenge for his family and to alter the future to a path only he can see.
Check out the interview in the video above or in the transcript below to find out what about the Bene Gesserit from the books Ferguson begged Villeneuve to include, her reaction to Dune: Prophecy possibly covering it, how she trained for a massive transformation in Part Two, and an update on Apple TV+'s Silo Season 2.
The cast of Dune: Part Two brings back Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Josh Brolin as Gurney, Dave Bautista as Rabban, Stellan Skarsgård as Baron Harkonnen, and introduces Christopher Walken as the Emperor, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, and Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha.

I'm disappointed, Max. You didn't have a clue what she was talking about. It was the scene in the wet-world conservatory - Margot Fenrig had left a coded warning message on the back of a certain leaf that only another BG would have been able to read. Jessica found it about the same time Paul was having his hunter-seeker encounter.

Note that the wet world conservatory was located in Arrakeen in the main building complex designated as Duke Leto's HQ, and that's where Jessica encountered it in the book. Now there was some sort of plant collection elsewhere in Dune 1, but I feel that was just a homage to the book. I suppose that's ok, but I'm still peeved about the dinner scene omission, especially as it lays down so much by way of power dynamics between characters and even within themselves.

Nice video - Fergusuon is obviously very skilled as an actress, and yet I've felt thru most of her roles that she's not being used fully, that I could easily envision other strong actresses doing the same - until Dune 1, that sequence where her mentor tests Paul, and Jessica's squirming conflictedness - IMO nobody else could have captured that quality, so I hope she hones in on that in her work - but watching her do this interview, I'd hope to see her in more classical material - Shakespeare, Austen, Moliere, etc

@@derek96720 In many ways I agree with you. It is just adapting the book to a movie is what I believe they are trying to do. It is their interpretation of the book and what they feel is needed to attract audiences and make it profitable. You have to admit that understanding the effect of lasers on shields (nuclear explosions) is why they still use blades may be an issue in a movie. Or the Butlerian Jihad on the timeline and technologies of Dune. Even explaining what a Kwisatz Haderach is, or how the Bene Gesserit were able to facetime with their ancestors is very difficult to explain in a movie. Overall I am impressed with the movies though. Is it perfect and true to the books? No. I am willing to cut them some slack though just to see another generation introduced to what has always been one of, if not my favorite, sci-fi series of all time. Maybe some people will watch the movies and actually read the books given a chance. If we cut them some slack and they stay profitable, maybe we can get the God Emperor of Dune done! Now that would be worth seeing!

Good interview but i gotta say the new visual format is unsettling for me, the visual effect that you are in a space together combined with the slight disconnect from internet lag jsut causes an uncanny valley thing that i don't like. If i was less aware what was going on i would probably think you were just kind of rude, but i understand its the lag.

She might have confused him by referring it to as a kind of sign language instead of a quasi-braille that only people in the know would know.

I had never seen or heard of this actress until I saw her truly horrendous portrayal of the Lady Jessica in Dune one. I still cannot imagine what the director was thinking. Next time someone needs a nervous washer woman she's the one they need.

The leaf reading scene really could have been kept in (not having seen part 2, I'm just winging it here). It is a moment that not only provides a plot point but is also revelatory of Lady Fenring's character. It's really the first point where we know her loyalties - to the Bene Gesserit and thus to Jessica. We'll see how it plays in a couple weeks when the movie comes out.

Lady Jessica is my favorite character and I love thay Rebecca also loves her. I'm so sad because next to Paul she is the most important character by far but for some reason the films keep cutting her scenes short, I really don't get it. The interviews with the rest of the cast they never seem to regret stuff that was cut but Rebecca always mentions it. Nevertheless I'm so excited to watch it next month.

Supposedly many more hours of footage was shot than what made it into the theatrical release. Hopefully the directors cut will be twice as long and really flesh out the whole universe and characters.
