    The ONLY reason he didn't take the gladiator's head after the Baron offered it was just to piss off the Baron AND make himself LOOK like he was honoring him in front of the crowd. In reality all the matches were fixed. The slave-gladiators were always drugged. This one wasn't and he almost killed Feyd. It was only a 'cheat word', implanted in the gladiator's subconscious allowed Feyd to win. Also, Feyd never stabbed him. He poisoned him and the gladiator killed HIMSELF before the poison could do some REALLY nasty stuff to him. It's all plots within plots, feints within feints. The movie has a nice soundtrack and fantastic visuals, but what they did with the story was a travesty! I'm an old man who's read all of the Dune novels many times over the past 50 years (I'm 62 now and first read Dune at age 12). Call me a certified Dune-nerd if you will, but I practically have them memorized and have long ago discovered and marveled over all of the subtleties in religion, politics, hell, EVERYTHING buried in this literary masterpiece!

    @@itsjustme8947 Just as they weren't happy that they thought they'd lost the Atreides line. The BG aren't interested in the Great Houses per se, they're just interested in maintaining the bloodlines and controlling the power from the shadows, and Houses make that easier. It's important to note that many of the Sisterhood are essentially backup reservoirs of genetic lineages deemed part of the breeding program. Yes, losing the named members of a bloodline is a setback, but the BG have at this point been running an operation that spans 90 generations; compared to that a House is a blip.

    I think the movie did a really good job conveying Feyd’s warped sense of humanity. His ability as a fighter was never really the point of the character, rather would he be able to control his emotions enough to be suitable for fathering the Kwisatz haderach. Feyd walks the line of humanity, the animalistic roars and laughter at his own danger, but also shows a realllyyyy warped paternal instinct for his slave girls (they get to eat the killed servants after all) and the look of contemplation and almost sadness after Lanville’s death. The most important Feyd scene though is the one they don’t show, him passing the Gom Jabbar test, if he truly wasn’t human there’s no way Fenring would let him survive and secure the bloodline.

    @@I_Art_Laughing Super fair point and honestly makes me consider what the Gob Jabbar as a test is solving for. The object seems to be to weed out people who can't control their emotions, but values cold dispassionate utilitarian thinking which you can argue isn't an inherently good human trait. Taking it one step further, if this test is finding (and creating) cold, cruel, calculating people its almost then robotizing humanity, inversing the Butlerian Jihad by making humans in the likeness of a computer.

    And Feyd kind of loved him for it... You can see how bored he was killing the first two. They were no challenge to him and "No Challenge= No Satisfaction", but then Lanville dodged and parried his initial flurry and you can see Feyd almost wake up. This man is no mere drugged sacrifice, Lanville is skilled, capable and is absolutely not going down without a fight. I think that shot of Feyd laughing as Lanville tries to stab him in the mouth, may be the happiest we see him in the entire movie.

    I actually love the depiction of Feyd as a capable fighter. He's basically a genetic wish bag bred by a super powerful secret organization and as the upcoming head of the richest house in the galaxy, he definitely has the money to be trained by great masters. Just because his life isn't really at risk in the arena, it doesn't mean he can't develop skill. That being said, visibly throwing away your shield in front of a crowd of ten thousands in plain sight should almost automatically trigger a dozen assassins with snipers that hide on Giedi Prime. In a hostile universe like Dune, every great house would place sleeper agents everywhere.

    @@Rudeljaegerthe book didn’t go into any real detail of the fight between Paul and Feyd. They circle each other, Feyd trash talks, Paul thinks about his fight strategy, Feyd cuts Paul, they circle, Paul cuts Feyd. They are on the ground with Feyd on top. Poison spur from Feyd’s belt, Paul reverses and stabs Feyd through the chin into his brain. Beyond that, nothing is said about anyone getting the upper hand. As Paul beating Jamis, Jamis was an unskilled fighter by comparison. Paul really didn’t have much fight experience outside of his shield practice with Duncan and Gurney. The Elacca drug makes the fighter less fearful, which is why the imperium used it. Makes for a more exciting fight. It was not like giving a Valium, more like giving the fighters alcohol. It takes away inhibitions and will for self-preservation.

    @itsjustme8947

    22 күн бұрын

    I don't know what book you think you read, but it wasn't Dune. Feyd set his own barbs and they had no 'sedative'. There were two barbs set and the gladiator, after tying them down, was able to use them to block a couple of Feyd's attacks. As a matter of fact, there was NOBODY allowed in the arena besides Feyd and his ONE opponent (not three). Feyd was actually about to lose and said the word 'scum' which had been 'programmed' for lack of a better term, into the Atreides gladiator's subconscious. This caused his muscles to weaken for just a moment allowing Feyd to land a cut with the black blade which WAS poisoned as yet another plot. The short, white blade was traditionally the one that carried the poison. You see, Feyd enjoyed having new poisons created which would torment his opponent slowly before the poison killed them. The gladiator killed HIMSELF. Also, the Baron didn't set any of this up. Feyd NEVER took off his shield and the gladiator wore a half-shield himself. It was a plot hatched by Feyd and Thufir Hawat to make Feyd look like a hero and also to discredit the Baron's slavemaster. Don't say this b.s. was in the books when this scene, aside from the black and white blades, was NOTHING like the novel!! NOTHING.

    There is only one thing i was sad it didn't had in this scene, i don't remember every detail in the book, but the "slaves" did have shields too and the one that is Lieutenant Lanville here used and very particular style were he concentrated all the shield in one arm, he would use it to block attack with precision. In the book it is a style of fight that very few could use because of how much concentration and technique were necessary. It drove home how much well trained the Atreides soldier compared to the Harkonnen.

    I was hoping for that true, but I guess they went with no shields for the gladiators to underscore how riggedvthe fights usually were

    Some of the best depictions of “heroes” in cinema is in large part due to their antagonist. Making a hero is easier, I would say. Have him/her believe or represent something the audience can get behind, most of the time, morally. Villains are different. They could have a million different ambitions, or agendas that defines their existence. Luke Skywalker would be less significant without Vader. Batman and Joker. Maximus and the Emperor from Gladiator. I can understand why there would be interest in this character, and among many other villains. I certainly think that way.

    @@I_Art_Laughing Sure, towards the end of Part 2, and certainly in to Messiah, Paul's motives become realigned. Even when Feyd is introduced in this film, it wouldn't be a stretch to consider him still the protagonist. Ask the average viewer whether or not Paul is a hero, and you know as well as I do how people would answer. Even more so if he is compared directly to Feyd.
