Houston is a frequent preseason scrimmage partner for my alma mater, Duke, and for a good reason. Houston is a tough, tough team every year. I'm very sorry about Shead...a truly tragic loss at this time of year. Looking back over Duke's history, I can think of injuries that cost us shots at national titles too--Robert Brickey in the 1988 Final Four, Kyrie Irving all season in 2011, Zion Williamson most of the season in 2019... and I hated it so much. North Carolina lost Armando Bacot to injury with mere seconds to go in the national final in 2022, converting what would have been an almost certain layup for a 1-point lead into a turnover down 1. Also, I thought Kelvin Sampson showed enormous class in the postgame presser as well. When asked if he thought Houston would have won but for Shead's injury, he refused to answer...and that is EXACTLY the right answer. Everyone knows he thinks so, and even I think so, but he had the class to avoid saying it and possibly offending an opponent. I'll forever appreciate that.

Yeah and in the second half they gave the duke pg 3 free throws on that ridiculous call that shoukd have been on the floor. And then let filipowski push off before his and 1 down the stretch. Bur who cares. The team that had some amount of skill beat the goons who had no amount of skill. Add this houston run to the Jamie Dixon pitt teams the Huggins Cincy and west Virginia teams as a bunch of goons who just can't get it done. The minute duke punched back against the goons that's all it took.

Lies you tell. A 54 - 51 final score, where both teams shot under 41%, and had a combined 24 TOs is not the upper echelon of basketball. It's actually setting the sport back. The quality of play, coaching, and shot-making isn't remotely on the same level. 😂 The Knicks - Spurs regular season game, who are both far from being top teams, was better than anything the men's March Madness tourney has produced thus far and probably the rest of the way.

As a Duke Alumni and forever fan, I have to admit I was anxious and nervous leading up to the game because I knew Houston wasn’t going to hand the game over to Duke- my #BlueDevils were going to have to work for a win. Admittedly, odds must've been much lower with Shead on the court for Duke. But injuries are nothing but part of the game. Duke did a solid job and clearly deserved a victory en route to the Elite Eight.

Honestly, as an NCSU alumnus, I’m not looking forward to my team playing Duke again after we managed to get past them in the ACC tournament.

Man I have been pleasantly surprised by this duke teams ability to take it up a notch in the physicality and hustle. They've got the talent to win the title this year, but they better bring this fight sunday afternoon to the State game! They are the better team and should win. Other than UCONN, I don't think any of the remaining teams in the tourney are as good as Duke at their best. They bring it like they did tonight and they may just go all the way! Great time to be a duke fan, elite 8, potential title and then we get Flagg next year? Awesome!

Since Jon Scheyer took over Duke has been constantly called soft and weak and last years loss to Tennessee and the first five minutes of this game did not help their case. But in that second half I saw the most fight and grit that I’ve seen in a Duke team in years.

Jamal Shead leaving the floor with an ankle injury became too much for Houston to overcome, but credit Duke for matching the physicality of the cougars and making it a grind out type game

Duke was able to recover from a slow start. Duke stepped up there defense and established the tempo.

Houston played 1 on 1 street ball literally every posession, you're not winning anything like that.

Definitely a great game by by both teams !! This is why I prefer college basketball over the NBA because of The anxiety and the thrill of knowing the best team in the tourney or the number 1 team can get put out !! Let’s go DUKE !!!!

they werent beaten badly, unc barely won at duke last game of the season and needed 32 points a career high from cormac ryan to do it, and kyle had 30 or 32 points vs nc state and they barely lost that game. i think duke can beat nc state this time. duke shot very poorly that game and only kyle played well that game in the acc tourney. keep in mind duke blewout nc state in the last game of the season for nc state at home on senior night.

hey UK fans? if you’re watching i’m gonna remind you that coaching matters-even though Duke isn’t fully one and done like UK, they just beat a team with TONS of experience compared to their experience level. oh and Jon just OUTCOACHED Kelvin in the 2nd half. and next year their class is MILES better than this year, which is the scary part. oh and Alabama and Tennessee are in the elite 8. so the SEC is nowhere near UK’s conference anymore.

@@jowoshy2691 Mic drop......Houston was overrated.....getting beat twice by Iowa State....who are a good team.....but they got completely smoked and exposed in that last one....probably should have been a 2 seed.
