Duke F Kyle Filipowski suffers injury as Wake Forest fans storm court

Фильм және анимация

After the college basketball game between Duke and Wake Forest, Demon Deacon fans stormed the court to celebrate a big win but it appeared that Duke forward Kyle Filipowski suffered an ankle injury after colliding with fans. He was clearly hobbled and needed to be helped into the locker room.

    That Duke player is in error totally. 1) This is an interstate rivalry game. Consider the schools. 2) The game is obviously over. Considering the score and time remaining. 3) When you lose a game on the opposing teams home court, or field hurry your azz off there court. Considering the time he had to get out of harms way. @@SriramPatnaik-bv7ob Nah, Matt is right -- storming the court when you're the home favorite is pretty lame. Also it's exceedingly ignorant to allow hundreds of drunk, hyped up fans to rush the basketball court without a meaningful effort to get the opposing team out of there first. It's surprising there weren't any more injuries looking at how reckless the WF fans were acting. And I actually do understand court storming to some degree as a Razorback fan considering we literally saw Arkansas fans rush the court less than 6 months ago after upsetting #7 Duke last year in late November. But if you watch the video of that, it's much more controlled and we didn't have a multitude of fans running full speed through the Duke players. The cops and security did a MUCH better job at keeping players and staff safe at Bud Walton, whereas the Wake Forest fans (especially the side coming from the left in the video) were charging and running straight thru the Duke players at full speed. There's an obvious difference when you compare the two incidents, and frankly it's not a good look at all for the WF fanbase. People should have enough self control to not run into someone else head on, regardless of the situation.

    @@stephenedelmann2665 How do you expect to get the players off quick when, Duke could have tied the game by a player getting fouled while hitting a 3 pointer? As unlikely as that was happening, it can and it has happened. The game was not over.

  • @stephenedelmann2665

    @stephenedelmann2665

    3 ай бұрын

    @@kristopherloviska9042 Well the main issue is that WF fans started full-speed storming the court from the Duke side before the game clock had even expired, which is just a complete lack of control. And like I already said, compare this with the video from Arkansas fans storming the court against Duke after the upset last November. The Blue Devils also had the ball in the close of that game too. However, the difference is more than apparent. Not to mention the fact that court storming isn't even allowed by the SEC, whereas the ACC does allow it. Obviously SEC schools can't necessarily stop it from occurring, but they can protect opposing players/staff and fine TF out of the program storming the court after it happens (with fines that increase each time). I believe UA had to pay $250k for that particular time. Plus there's also a considerably heavier security presence noticeable at Bud Walton, who were prepared for such an incident and helped usher the Duke players off the court. It's really not difficult to have measures in place to prevent players/staff from getting injured, but a lot of that also comes down to the fanbase too. Razorback fans clearly didn't attempt to run thru the Duke players at full speed, whereas the WF fanbase (especially those running from the Duke side of the court) were completely reckless and lacked any semblance of self-control.

My suggestion is simply to put the onus on the institution to manage and turn up the pain level for non compliance. For example: students of the university who storm the courts are expelled from the school and forced to pay restitution for damages. Non students would face trespassing charges and pay a fine. The school would record the loss. Repeated violations would result in charter restrictions, tournament banning or forfeiture of playing NCAA games. This will only get worse if its not dealt with. Wake Forest was FAVORED to win the game and was winning throughout the second half. With several minutes left, you could actually hear the students saying they were going to storm the court on the broadcast. That’s not what storming the court is supposed to be. It’s supposed to be reserved for buzzer beaters and national championships, not favored teams who are already winning. This was classless and dangerous (Edit: I said this out loud with four minutes left, and lo and behold, our star player was injured). In the aerial view they showed on ESPN, you can even see a Wake Forest student going out of his way to push Kyle from behind. At Duke, we are not allowed to storm the court. In my four years, we did it once - when Sean Dockery hit that crazy buzzer beater against Virginia Tech. Coach K later said he wanted to storm the court too, but we aren’t allowed to do it and shouldn’t anymore. And we don’t.

    Filipowski was looking for trouble, sandbagging off the court. He forearm shivered the hell outta one student in the face and cleaned their clock (she slid halfway across the court), then he tried to trip another one and hurt himself. The other Duke players easily cleared the court before the rush.

    This shit weird as fuck, the opposing team already lost and they rubbing it in by storming the court before the players can even get off and ended up injuring a player as a result. There should be some system implemented to ensure the safety of the players at the bare minimum because it’s going to be hard to stop people from getting on the court without implementing hefty fines or holding individuals accountable.
