I'm glad they didn't go the route of Scrooge either being on the naughty list as a kid or Santa not giving him a specific gift that he wanted and that's why he hates Santa. I'm also glad they didn't go the route of having Santa secretly be evil/a twist villain and you actually understand both sides of their argument. This backstory has been referenced a few times and this episode's payoff was worth the wait.

I have to admit. While I didn't exactly expect things to play out the way they did, I wasn't surprised as to what his motive was. I always suspected that Scrooge hated Santa as a result of his own upbringing that turned into his work ethic. That giving presents out for free somehow comes off as an unearned hand out, rather than the result of years of hard work and the motivations that come from a risk vs. reward seeking lifestyle. Maybe with a hint of "there's no such thing as a free lunch." Technically accurate with this story of him wanting to charge for his and Santa's services, but I'd expect that he'd fill Donald and Della (and by extension Webby) with anti-Santa propaganda to give them a hard work ethic. Something I'd be inclined to think Della would fully embrace, but Donald would give his usual "Aw, Phooey" to. I agree. I'm glad they didn't go the same route as Futurama or American Dad, but especially since it's a story that puts Scrooge into the antagonistic role. One that comes off more the Christmas Carol version of Scrooge than the actual Christmas Carol episode of the series.

I'm genuinely amazed with this Christmas special. The writers planted the idea of a "grudge" between Scrooge and Santa since season 1 and slightly teased it a few times, including in the first Christmas special. It made sense for his character of not wanting to give away presents for free. Plus, he considered Santa both as a business partner and a friend, something that he didn't have much in his life.

There’s more to Christmas than presents. Santa himself explained that he finds joy in seeing the kid’s eyes light up get something for the heart, warming it in gesture and feeling than in practical use. Part of his and Scrooge’s falling out was how the latter couldn’t see it past his business sense. So while most see Christmas as a stressful “must get this gift” kind of rush, this special helps remind us (and Scrooge) that there can be just as much joy giving as receiving. That, and I love this special worked as a sort of Origin story for Santa Claus who Webby lampshades has a lot in common with Scrooge. And it’s great they got to be friends again!

What struck me about this was Scrooge's connection to coal. In some of the earlier versions of the Santa Claus story, he had a partner: Knecht Ruprecht, Krampus, Swarte Piet (“Black Pete”), and so on, with different parts of the world featuring different companions. These companions were darker than Santa Claus, punishing children on the naughty list with such “gifts” as a switch or a lump of coal while rewarding children on the nice list with simple but practical gifts. Scrooge isn't fitting into that mold perfectly (there's nothing in his character about punishing naughty children); but he comes surprisingly close.

I loved this element. There were so many layers here -- the coal is a perfect symbol for Scrooge's industriousness and pragmatism. Like him, it's also misunderstood. People think of the coal as a punishment when, in truth, it's a useful, reliable commodity meant to keep you warm on a cold night. People think of Scrooge as a selfish, heartless miser when, in truth, he has an ethical objection to people receiving things they didn't earn, and he's principled enough to follow his convictions when it costs him dearly.

I don’t think there’s some secret hidden meaning or anything. But maybe when they made the one with Zeus they realized that they had already done it with Gladstone so they decided to play into it and make it sort of a running gag. So that’s why they did it a 3rd time with Santa, and maybe they’ll even do it again in the last few episodes.

I like how you can take each of these Christmas specials and they each make their own arc from them. This means the arc for Christmas is over going from being bitter over the holiday to secretly enjoying it to Spoilers for the episode To allowing Santa into his home. I think that them ending this arc in ducktales is indicative of the series ending. Maybe Santa will help Scrooge defeat F.O.W.L or get the felis navidiamond

  • @MiloMurphysLaw

When they first mentioned the Felis Navidiamond I was honestly thinking that it was gonna be another Missing Mystery and another flashback of Scrooge fighting FOWL to get it first. I’m glad that they didn’t do that because it wouldn’t have fit in the episode, but I am wondering if they’ll bring it back later in the season. I mean, the Darkwing episode was a huge part of the plot of season 3, so I feel like they could totally make the Christmas episode fit into the plot of the season too. It would make perfect sense to have FOWL steal the Diamond and have Santa help in the battle against FOWL. I’m still expecting them to have every character from the entire show come back to help fight against FOWL.

I've just been thinking about this Quarantine Christmas, and how it really affected my spirit for the holiday this year. This is also the first year I haven't spent Christmas with my family, even though they live reasonably close by...we managed a parking lot exchange of goods, but we're all doing our best to keep each other safe. That's heartwarming in its own way, I suppose, but it was hard. Hope you found happiness in your own holiday...this special did bring a smile to me when I saw it, especially seeing little Jennifer making a toy out of anything. Find happiness with what you have? To this day; I question why some rich people hate the idea of giving away gifts for free (i.e. selfless generosity,) their obsession with "practicality" and thinking Christmas should be treated as more of a commercial racket instead of a wholesome holiday. All these millionaires, billionaires, trillionaires and even SEXILLIONAIRES (which is like a one with THIRTY zeroes after it) have all the money in the universe in the palms of their hands. What's wrong with making someone happy by giving them a toy, a piece of clothing or any other kind of gift for free? Is it really that painful to be selfless or generous?

Some became rich with selfish habits that are hard to break. They also struggle to understand how someone could stay poor and thus see generosity as rewarding laziness. Some were born wealthy and don't see the need for generosity when they never needed to be on the receiving end. Then there's the "pull yourself up by the bootstrap" cult that believe poverty is purely the result of laziness and wealth purely as the result of hard work. The bootstrap phrase originally meant trying to achieve what was literally impossible as you can't literally raise your elevation by pulling your shoelaces.

I know I have the option to do this, but I keep leaving it on. I don't know why. I kinda like it. I know better. I went to school for this once up on a time.

Webby was really annoying in the first part of this episode. She just blindly follows Scrooge and she’s usually the researcher in the family. I know she love Scrooge (and we find out more in the series finale why) her hatred for Santa is annoying. She’s also the most loving of the group and sees the best in people

Another thing I've forgotten to point out...Christmas could never be "Scrooge's racket" because it already belonged to someone else. Not Santa, not the business people...it's Christ; Scrooge is the kind of person who is too blind to understand what the holiday is really about. All people like him worry about is green paper and metal coins. To me, THAT'S more wasteful of a gift to get than any toy or game

Well before Christ, it belonged to the Celts and other various cultures of Northern Europe. Christianity might have spread the traditions around the world, but most of the mainstays; mistletoe, feasts, keeping warm together on the longest nights of the year, are all from the Winter Solstice celebrations. If anything, Santa is the Christ figure in this special, mixing peace and love with Scrooge's cold practicalities of coming together to stay warm and chase away the cold winter's night.

What makes me sad about 2020 is that not just we lose our freedom and trapping ourselves in bubbles, but we also cannot interact with friends, families, or anyone since they are trapped in their homes or behind glasses.
