Ducato van diy part-time 4x4 - rear axle drive P4 hybrid

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Concept for a part-time off-highway-use rear axle assistance on a FWD van. Here a quick look to the rear axle with added differential drive which is the locking diff from a Mitsubishi Pajero. The axle itself is taken from a mechanical 4WD Dangel Ducato, so leaf spring suspension and brakes are all maintained from the original vehicle. View is thru the hole in floor which is for the top of electric motor. The motor will be mounted below but with a 20mm or so protrusion above the floor. I try to design to keep enough ground clearance. Actually it would package better on the flatbed chassis Ducato like those more common on the larger motorhomes. On the panel van like this the floor is low and the package height is a challenge.
Please Note to all critics - I admit this is not an elegant solution! - It is a practical approach on a low budget re-purposing existent salvage hardware. I do have a next idea for dual permanent engaged electric motors without requiring a differential while providing the high traction capability and hopefully on-highway regen braking. But this is so far a low cost prototype to explore how effective such an assistance add-on could be, avoiding the expense of buying a new 4x4 van. The motor used will be 12kW 48v, supplied by LiFePO4 1.2kWh house battery. Intention is to keep things safe and low maintenance, sufficient for a low speed recovery operation, for the very few occasions when a 4x4 assistance is actually required.

the rear axle i used is from a salvaged >yr.2006 Dangel 4x4 Ducato because this provides me with the driven wheel hubs and a ready bolt-on starting point for my project. I do have a design on paper to retrofit a toyota 80series Landcruiser full-float freehub drive hub onto a Ducato rear axle stub, but this will be a future development. Right now i got the Dangel axle as most convenient bolt-up start base, means no changes in suspension or brakes, except 115pcd hubs not 130pcd of my original wheels.(not a problem because new Ducato 16" wheels now available in 115pcd.) For the Differential, i chose Not to use the Dangel diff because it is an unusual and hard to find component. I have used a Mitsubishi Shogun/Pajero rear diff with Locker, E47D. It is a very heavy beast with good reputation and i believe strong enough for this 3.5t Van application. details in my blog: www.offroadhybrids.com/

@@ladislavsafarik8745 Yes i realised also this limitation with sourcing Dangel components, they are quite a specialist small volume producer in France, so there are not so many parts. I bought my salvaged axle from a guy in France who dismantles them (www.pieces-dangel.com/). I did this mainly for the fast start it gave me to then focus to the electric motor coupling side. However, a better solution i believe is to design a retrofiting driven wheel hub for the standard Ducato rearaxle - similar as found here: frontrangeoffroadfab.com/full-floater-conversion/ & here: www.4x4wire.com/toyota/reviews/fullfloater/ where a widely available hub such as from Toyota Landcruiser provides a high load capacity Full-Float double bearing Plus the special advantage of the manual FreeHub locking design, this especially suited for engaging/disengaging the '4WD' mode for low speed only, like old-school Landcruisers. I will describe this soon in detail in an update on my project Blog.
