Ducati Multistrada 950S - Long Term Owners Review + First London Commute - 4K

As a top procrastinator, I spent a long time choosing what bike to get for touring and commuting having ridden supersports bikes my whole life.
I settled on the Ducati 950S after dismissing the Tracer 900GT, MV Augusta Tourismo Veloce and Multistrada 1260S.
In this video I ramble through a year of ownership of the 950S, some of the features of the bike and any comparisons that I could glean on the new V4S Multi and outgoing 1260S model. 2021 bargain?

Finally someone riding a bike in real-world conditions, and not empty countryside which doesn´t tell those of us that live in the city how its going to bahave on a day-to-day basis. I´ve been considering one of these for a while, but I´m a bit concerned about how hot it will get in the stop-go london traffic, especially during the summer. My Tiger 800 is unbarable, and would love to hear of your communting experience when the warmer weather comes, lockdown allowing of course.

Hey Robin - rode the bike in 28-30 degrees a fair bit in the last week. I can honestly say that there isn’t that same heat that you might expect. Only from wearing heavy black bike gear. Even when the bike is hot and the fan is on, it doesn’t blow on you like I’ve had with my other bikes. And the position of the exhaust didn’t overwhelm me with heat either.

@@crushitall The problem for me is the heat through the seat when commuting in central London during summer. As soon as the average speed drops below 20 mph or so (which it can do easily thanks to all the traffic lights) any journey over about 30 mins becomes unbarable. I´ve ridden a Kawasaki ER5, Honda CBR600F, Triumph Speed Triple 1050 all in the same conditions, but none have been so hot, regardless of clothing choice. This isn´t a one-off - I´ve had my tiger in London since 2011. The heat, the poor wind protection with the standard screen (easily fixable with an after market), and weak front brake (later models are much better) are its only negative points.

Thanks for the video, I’ve just bought a used 950s and from all the reviews including yours the smaller bike was the one to go for, I did look at the new V2s, but this bike that I’ve just bought is immaculate and it’s got quite a lot of extras on it, I haven’t even ridden one yet so I’m looking forward to it. I’ve got a Streetfighter V4s which I’ve done about 10000 miles on so I didn’t see the point of having that engine on a adventure bike, fun as it would be. You travelling through the blackwall tunnel brought a lot of memories back, I used to commute up from East Sussex everyday and sometimes used that route . And used to live in Canning Town which I certainly don’t miss. Safe riding 👍

950 s is a killer bike! I knew about the v4 when I got my new 1260s a few months ago. I knew the 1260 is perfected ! I was also aware the first couple of years of any new bike has issues and I was right! Fuel range is way down and it’s heavier! No single sided swingarm no trellis frame! I prefer the twin ! You chose very well!!! 950s is a perfect scoot!

I’ve had my 950S for 2 years now. When I first got it and for my first ride I took off and rode down to the hill country in Eastern France. I absolutely love the bike. The only thing I didn’t like was the screen. I’m 6 foot and experienced lot’s of wind buffeting, also with the factory bigger screen. I solved it by buying an MRA after marker]t screen and now no more wind buffeting.

As I’m very interested in the new V2s I’m browsing through all sort of publications and videos to get an idea of how the bike is really like and I’ve noticed that you’ve been doing the same, you had a GS if I remember correctly. I had a GS for a couple of years, did 36 000 km on it in two years sold it because as I’m not the tallest of guys I found it unwieldy when loaded on trips. Also I fell out of charm with the drive train and the boxer engine when I tried a Kawasaki inline-four. I’ve been riding a Ninja now for three years, it will clock 40 000 km at the end of the year and I’m slowly looking for a replacement. I love the sport-tourer but pushing 63 years now I’m kind of leaning again towards a tad more comfortable bikes, not that the Ninja wasn’t except for the knee angle. I love it’s 17 inch front wheel but the roads I like to ride are getting worse with the years and so I’m gravitating towards a bike with electronic suspension and/or longer suspension travel but am unwilling to sacrifice too much of sportiness. I ride with mates on GSs and the pace is on the brisky side. My question to you Mr Ted. Compared to the GS, do you notice that the Ducati has some 25 hp less? Size wise it would be an ideal bike for me. I’m light (62kg) and although the Ninja weighs 140 kg it’s a low bike, something the GS and for that matter most of the ADV bikes, aren’t. My only doubts towards the V2s is it’s power and riliability, coming as I do from a japanese make. Regards

Hi love the review, got my 950s gp white and absolutely love it, 2 questions firstly how do you record your audio, equipment and placement etc. Sounds very good, I’m trying to figure out a decent solution, secondly do you ever experience in first gear at low to medium revs the bike stuttering slightly. I had it yesterday for the first time, going out today and hope it was a one off. My biggest gripe is everything I have seen on this bike mentioned Bluetooth so I though it came with it, it doesn’t and I’ve been waiting for ages for it to arrive. Another expense lol. They’re hopefully doing it with the 600 miles service cost, really irritating I have to pay labour to have it done, if I’d know and ordered with the bike I wouldn’t have.

  • @DadDoesOutdoors

    @DadDoesOutdoors

    3 жыл бұрын

Hi Mike, not sure about the Bluetooth - might be an offer from your dealership? That was all additional on the 2020 version and to be honest, I’d rather connect to my phone and not have those distractions on the bike screen. And audio is the day job, so I have lots of microphones and recorders so I do it separately. Depends on your particular helmet and camera or if you want to record separate like me. If you can experiment with getting a lav mic into your cheek pad and out of the wind you should be good. You’ll also need a way of reducing the input right down due to the proximity of the mic to your mouth and the noise from the wind/bike.

Multi is the same engine as the Hyper but a very different ride. I'd have a go on both and see what you think. I’m thinking of swapping my 2019 V-Strom 1000 for one of these as I love the looks and have a Ducati dealer 10 minutes from my home! Is it the same engine in the Multistrada? Thanks

  • @DadDoesOutdoors

Hi David, I'd be lying if I said that there weren't any vibrations. But if my Honda CBR600 was a 1 and any Harley is a 5 for vibration, you'd probably find your V-Strom at a 2 and the multi at a 3. I think the Hypermotard and the Supersport have the same motor, but different gearing. I don't get too much vibration on the wing mirrors (if you look at the video again, you can probably see this too) but there will be some rev range where there's resonance across the bars. Also, the Supersport mirrors are sprung and fixed differently to the Multi. Definitely have a test drive and let me know what you think! But maybe go in the car or most Ducati's are going to feel vibey, jumping straight off a Jap bike.

Fay Meyers Ducati in Denver has a new red 2021 950S on the floor in red with spoked wheels. I watched Bennett’s review of the new V2S and the guy said that for 6 footers the 950S is better because they lowered and narrowed the seat on the V2S to accommodate smaller riders. Question: Do you think my wife could get comfortable on the 950S with a top box added? We rode a Goldwing before the Electraglide, so she used to Barcolounger accommodations. Very helpful review. Well I was going to buy a used MV Lusso but they were all out of warranty which seemed risky and there were issues that didn’t get solved until the newer models. But then the new models started to not have all of the features of the older models without paying extra (such as integrated Garmin). To get the top of the range bike with SCS (auto clutch) was over £22k so it just priced me out. The Tracer GT is a great bike, I test drove three on different occasions. When the S model of the Ducati was launched and I could afford one, it just became no contest on account of the performance and features.

If you haven't done so already, I suggest you get a throttle spacer. It'll take up the slack and make the throttle feel less cheap and rattly. It's silly money for what it is but it works.
