    Great review dude! Earlier this year I realized I had gotten tired of riding Harley's...just lost interest in strong-arming a 900 pound land-yacht up and down the roads here in the U.S. Decided I wanted to ride something sportier, but had no interest in any kind of crotch-rocket...was thinking about a BMW adventure-sport...went to look at one, wasn't impressed. Turned around and saw a 2017 Duc MTS 950 and was knocked outta my socks. It was one of those classic "love at first sight" sorta moments. I had to wait over a month for the winter to clear enough to take it out for a test ride, and this was a video I watched multiple times (even though it is a review of the 2019 MTS 950) while I waited. I loved it so much that I bought it later the same day I rode it. it is now my primary mode of transport, I only drive my Jeep if the weather is bad, or I have to haul something. After racking up over 5,000 miles on my Ducati I can attest to how much of a blast it is to ride...and I can't fathom ever going back to riding a lumbering Harley. The Ducati does pretty much anything you could ask it to do, and does it extremely well. And let me tell you, here in central Illinois, the bike gets a lot of positive comments on its looks from other bikers when sitting at a stoplight. In the context of my 40+ years of riding, it is the perfect bike (for me, at least).

    Hey rider!! Funny you should tell this story!! 2 weeks ago, my multistrada parked at the bar, I hear the rumble of American iron!! Guy sits next to me and asks if that is my Ducati outside. He asked me how i liked it, I replied " the first 40.000 miles have been good, I think I will keep it!! He tells me that the "HARLEY THING " was getting old and was thinking maybe sports touring. Told him I think he should sit on it since he was 6'3 . Showed him the riding modes and suspension stuff ! I think he dug it!! Here is a video on my Ducati, hope you enjoy it!!😎😎 kzread.info/dash/bejne/pGakm8-rYZyTgbQ.html

    As a result of your review I test rode both the 1260s and the 950s I'm pleased to say that I have just collected the 950s and absolutely love it. I agree with all you've said in the review the 1260s I'm sure for some would be great but I have to say the 950 is more than capable. Such a rewarding engine and in my opinion it's all you need for the road. Great review John very much appreciated its resulted in me getting what I think is the best bike for me without your honest review I would probably have gone for the 1260. Keep it up pal

    I have only ridden a 2018 950 but it was so much better than I expected. I own a Versys 650 and Tiger 800, never have owned a Ducati, but I would buy the 950 Multi. The engine induction noise alone is intoxicating enough, but the bike is comfortable and extremely competent. I’m sure the Skyhook suspension is fantastic, but the standard fork/shock combo work very well. Many assume the 1200 or 1260 is the obvious choice and the better bike, but they haven’t ridden the 950. You are correct in your assertion that it’s the best one. I really must try the 950S.

    @@Speedytrip I'm 6ft (183cm) and the comfort seat was a must for me. Can't comment on the comfort V's 1250 as I had the original 950 not the S with no electronic suspension. I now have a 1290 SAS which is even more comfortable, but the 950 handles better than the KTM.

    Linked brakes are interesting. Had a Guzzi Spada with a simple mechanical system: you could stand on the foot pedal and come to a fairly rapid stable stop with one front disc and the back disc activated. If you really needed to pin it, you just added some second front disc with your right hand. Simple, reliable and effective for easy use.

    Great bikes but to sell more the price needs to be more competitive and the spares and accessories need to take a lot less time to arrive .I very nearly got last years model and to be honest it was only the seat height that was an issue .I settled for a crossrunner instead ,ok less electronics but has everything I need and substantially cheaper loaded with extras . However seeing your review just reminded me why I loved the multi ,so if my legs grow 3" I'll probably have one . Nice review cheers

    Good review, sounds like Ducati have finally fixed all the faults of the first gen of the 950 Multi, and there was a few! I had one of the first 950 Multis and before i picked it up (from new) the gearbox was in bits because the gear selector wouldnt work properly in top. After 12 months of ownwership i have had the following faults: Fork seal blown, front brake caliper pipe chaffing, second gearbox strip to fix selector, screen mount vibrations...repaired, clutch when cold was either in or out no in between, very scary pulling way from a junction in heavy traffic. Recalll on a coolant pipe, stalling motor when pulling away from cold, also not nice. Other generic faults, soft front suspension, lump low down. Other than that it was a great bike! But i wouldnt buy anther Ducati. Sorry....

    Thanks for the informative review. By the way the 'I' in IMU stands for inertial not internal. And while there are only 3 axes (roll, pitch yaw) of motion, the six-axis refers to a solid-state accelerometer and a separate gyro being on each of these axes measuring velocity and rotational forces. Some vehicles might have a magnetometer too (looking at heading) giving you a 9-axis IMU!

    Great review... one comment is that you can get 950 like power by adjusting your 12x0 to its low power mode. I found that in that mode the bigger multi feels very close to the 950 (weight is very close between the two). If you feel like 160hp is too much for most street riding but you may want it available for track days or for occasional spirited street riding then that would give you the best of both worlds (lower but entirely usable power for routine riding and higher power for shenanigans). If you're SURE that you'll be content with 110hp then the 950 is a great option - the new S has nearly everything available on the bigger brother. I can attest to the fact that (even for a guy who likes riding hard occasionally) I would not often notice the power difference during 95% of my riding.

    Man, if I could get a real garage with real space, I'm pretty sure this 950S would join space with my MT-09 as a well-rounded two bike setup, one for hooligan and another for distance and travel. I had a DL1000XT and I ultimately didn't like it that much. I think the 950S has a lot more of what the V-Strom lacked: power, technology, sporting pretensions (brakes, lean angle, lineage, quickshifter, etc).

    Why didn't Ducati offer a 17 inch cast wheel for this bike. If you wanted to do any "off roading" you could opt for the 19 spoke. Seems like it could be a better canyon carver with the 17 inch front likes it bigger brother the 1260.

    8.45 - You're adding preload with those settings, not firmness. Preload is to maintain rake/trail due to changes in load and setting up the suspension for adequate travel, both ways (SAG). Damping changes the firmness or softness of suspension. Stick it on two up with luggage and you are just raising the rear end of the bike, shortening the trail and making the bike turn in quicker. It has nothing to do with firmness.

  • @johnhogan8177

    @johnhogan8177

    Terry Cox firmness is how I would describe the feeling/response to increasing the preload, so I did. I saw on another 950 Multi review that you’re claiming you’ve found another journo that doesn’t understand suspension. I think you’re wrong.

  • @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff

    @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff

    John Hogan - yes, I don’t think so John. You’re not alone, many many people misunderstand what the effect of preload changes are and what it is for. In what way do you think the suspension is stiffer/softer by raising or lowering preload? How does that work mechanically (because at the end of the day the electronics just works on a mechanical spring). Is it possible your preload setup on that bike is also linked to the damping setting and it is changing damping as well as preload? Maybe that is the case in which case I would be wrong and owe you an apology.

    @@terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff The load setting chosen is linked to the damping circuit in the Skyhook algorithm. For one the rebound circuit is altered and I'd suspect that the compression is too. You can also customize your damping (5 levels; standard/soft/softest/hard/hardest) in each of the ride mode on those bikes. I own a Multi Enduro 1200 and the suspension is pretty much the same even if there's been improvement in the algorithm and the way you adjust them thru the dash interface.

    Since every rider is different I never tell folks "It's fine"... because if you go insane at the little things then Ducati isn't for you. I've had the bike in for warranty stuff at least 4 or 5 times, things like the seat staples coming out, recall on the sending unit for the fuel gage, broken pannier mount... annoyances. However it's not left me stranded once, which is my personal metric for reliable. @@shahrimanjohann9283
