I take out the 2022 Ducati Desert X for a first ride, road impressions and comparing it to my Husqvarna Norden 901

Honestly if it came down to it, id be happy with either. However if I was forced to choose... id take the Ducati. Although the Norden is an amazing bike, the Ducati just feels like more of a scrambler slash hooligan bike, which I love. And it definitely has a more off-road focused feel.
Thanks to Cyclespot for letting me test it out

Great review! Video quality was really good and you did a nice job of describing what it’s like to ride one. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for the comparison, I’m considering both and this was helpful
Well done, an awesome review. I rode it two days ago in Brisbane and I can't sleep, thinking about buying one. I prefer videos like yours which leave the specs out and just desribe what its like to ride. A bike-walkaround would help, perhaps in the middle somewhere.
Great review............. I own a Desert X and your riding impressions and comments are spot on regarding how the bike feels. I bought the touring screen, which is slightly hire and wider, eliminating all wind/buffeting even at high speeds.

Excellent review.

Great honest review cool 😊
great review , thanks
Great review, another bike I want 😂
As a "Ducaguy" who's in love with the V4 looks, I must admit, the Desert X is starting to grow on me the more I see it.

I never fall in love with V4 engine. I rather prefer the V2 which has less power but seems more fun to ride. btw, I ordered my DesertX this week after 24 hours test ride :-)
hi, thanks for review. having tested the 4 midsize teails in a row, the DesertX was my prefered, before Tuareg660, Norden901, AfricaTwin1100. the pleasure of riding it, piloting it was superior. Too bad it's so expensive. I'm coming from an AfricaTwin1000 (excellent trail, destroyed in an accident), I now have a Husky701 and KTM500. I fully agree with all your comments.

Thanks mate, appreciate the feedback
should i buy r1300 gs or go with desertx!?
Good info here. I’m 6’1” too, and I have a 32” inseam. I’m thinking of trading my BMW R 1200 GSA on one of these. I need something a little lighter. What to do?
As a primarily road rider I bought the Multistrada V2S with the same engine, after three GSs! Same engine and performance, much underrated bike excepting those that own one. What surprised me was the handling and the quality, the Desert X is too tall for me and I’d miss the electronic suspension. Yes, that induction howl is addictive…
Nice bike & nice review.

Put a taller screen on the Norden and solved the problem for high speeds on the motorways. And around town use the short screen 😊
Thank you
Tell me buddy, how did you honestly find the transmission and the quick shifter on the Desert X when compared to the one on the Husky Norden 901? Even though Husky doesn’t have the hydraulic system it’s not really needed because slipper clutch these days give us a light enough clutch pull as is. So combined with a Camel ADV 1-finger clutch lever it’s just as light as the one on Desert X. But to me the quick shifter is way better, smoother and more accurate on the Norden. 😊
Picking mine up tomorrow.

Jealous
IMO it is really topheavy when compared to Norden and bite on the throttle is sharper on Norden. felt like sitting ond old AT kinda. it is more comparable to 890r than norden as it has stiffer seat and is taller. the finish is great, but protection... you could drop norden/ktm stock all day without any additional protection. but yea, Duca is kinda prettier, can't lie.
@captain_midlife

I dunno about dropping the Norden, I put GIVI crash bars on mine, if you dropped it without them you'd definitely damage the fairings
@stavrozinio
Жыл бұрын
they do get scratched up, but they also have lot of give. I feared same in the start but got reasured drop after drop. did 20ish drops in rocky terrain and concrete, with only handguard cracked and tin-can plate beaten. problem is duca has nothing to rock-over on the way to fairings, and we know handlebars always turn and do not land ideally as on Ian's tests. crashbars are mandatory I would say, but everyone has their way of adding extrra cost I guess, via necessary hardware or software.
For me there’s no question I will buy the Norden this summer, I am about 6 foot so just a bit concerned it would be a bit to tall for me but I am sure I will get used to it 😊

what's your reasoning behind your decision over a better looking better performing better quality Ducati?
@roverroko306
Жыл бұрын
Man com on Ducati is never gonna be the German in this case Austrian quality which the Norden possesses. To me Noreen looks way better and performs just as good if not even better. But the main reason is better suspension for sure on the Expedition version of the Norden. Even more important the engine, I prefer parallel twins over any type of V or L configuration. The testa Stretta is good but it’s not on the level of LC8 compact parallel twin by KTM. That engine is a work of art. Sure I do like the Italian design but that’s all I like about Italian machines. Cars and bikes alike are way better coming out of German or in this case Austrian factories. This is a proven fact to me over and over by many rides of bikes from both stables, and especially many, many driven cars. The biggest difference which hit me straight away is the transmission which is way more precise on the Norden then the Desert X, not to mention the quick shifter way smoother on the Husky and KTM. Ducati in my opinion never had the neck to make real progress in this department. All the Ducati transmissions I have used where clunky and rough, always a problem with false neutrals. Italian bikes and cars are just not on the same level as German or Austrian. Never have been and never will be.
Have you ridden the Tuareg yet?

Good review, I enjoyed it. I have the Norden and the wind turbulence is terrible but Givi has released a touring screen which I've just. Fitted and it has cured the problem.

that DesertX better compares to the KTM890ADVR than the Norden. I rode test the DesertX and was enthusiastic about it, but the 890ADVR is as good on road and better off-road, and 2000cheaper. Ducati price is not justified.

I mean the 890 and the Norden are pretty similar, the 890 just has better suspension. But of course the 890R is the king off road
Wonder how the Duke stacks up off road against the king of true Adventure bikes ( KTM890R )
Take it to the dirt
Just traded mine for the Harley Pan Am!
Anyone who buys this bike to scrape it up, ding it, damage it, taking this in the dirt, it just asking for repair bills, and just simply lowering the trade and resale. Because who want's a bike that's been abused in the dirt. Keep it as a good touring bike, park it and pose as to how nice this bike looks.
I’ve found out that there is no maintenance manual as Ducati refers everything to a Ducati workshop. Even things like adjusting the chain. The air filter box is under the tank and there are zero instructions on how to get to it for maintenance and once again refers you to a Ducati dealership for service. This is far from ideal especially in Australian dusty conditions. I had a deposit on one which was to arrive last month but when I called in to see which day it was going to be available I was told all the allocations were filled and I wouldn’t get mine until the end of the year. I decided not to buy one a couple of days later because of the arrogance of the dealership towards me about the bike I was guaranteed to get in Sept. I went back a week later to get my deposit back and another salesman informed me that I can now get one pretty much immediately as I could see at least 5 in their showroom. This leads me to think that they have had cancellations for the bike. Maybe they also have learn’t of the limitations for basic servicing on the fly. I test rode it and it definitely is not punchy down low or anywhere really. The Aprilia Tuareg 660 is far more punchy even with way less power. I ended up buying a KTM 790r with 2000k’s on it with factory warranty till the end of the year.
There’s o way an Italian bike is better quality then Austrian bikes.

Audi owns Ducati now, and it's VERY noticable in the DesertX. I've been on numerous Ducati motorcycles, the DesertX is the first Ducati I actually purchased. It's going in for first service on Tuesday. Put 650 miles on it in under two weeks. Got ridden like a supermoto, single tracked and river crossed (14" water) all in one day. The DDX is a keeper. 😊
Complaining about the quick shifter because it's to hard to pull the clutch to change gear is just lazy, the rubber foot pegs are too stop wrecking your boots take it on a world tour and use it for what it was built for you won't be disappointed with that bike.

I’m not complaining about the quick shifter I’m doing a review and noting points. Ducati put a quick shifter on it and I’m saying how it feels. Would you rather reviews just not talk about included features? Also it’s not even hard to pull the clutch I never said it was.
