In the beginning, Richard was very keen on trying to replicate American styles and seeing if it could be absorbed into the music he was writing at the time but quickly realised that it simply wouldn’t work. Till even tried to sing in English, however, they decided that the German language would not only help to distinguish them from others, it was also much easier for them to convey the content of their lyrics using their mother tongue. Singer Till would also take a very simple approach when it came to writing lyrics. He would generally write hard sounding lyrics for harder riffs, and softer lyrics for softer riffs.
Rammstein, as individuals, had a variety of influences when it came to music. Till Lindemann's first record was Alice Cooper's Welcome To My Nightmare, along with one of his favourite albums being “Stomrbringer” by Deep Purple, and he was also a big fan of Chris Isaak.
Richard was into the American punk band Dead Kennedys as well as the English electro band Depeche Mode, and Oliver Riedel remembers hearing his mother playing Bob Dylan non-stop at home, with keyboardist Flake took cues from German 80s pop/rock band Die Arzte. It seemed that Motorhead also played a part in the development of the Rammstein sound as Richard remembers their live show leaving a lasting impression on him.

They've had a lot of therapy sessions together in order to do this. Richard has said in a German interview that he saw every album as the last one. If it wasn't for their therapy sessions over the years, they would not still be together with the same line-up I think.

It was 1997 when "Du Hast" was released, I was 4 years old and it blew my mind as a kid when I saw the video on MTV. I'll never forget that day and I will always remember when my Mom kept re-recording the video on VHS, so she can show my Dad once he came home from work. It blew his mind as well because we became huge fans ever since that day and Rammstein never disappointed us since. Now, fast forward 25 years later and I finally went to my first Rammstein concert here in NJ at MetLife Stadium. As in my Dad's honor, especially since it has been 10 years since he has have been gone, I made sure to not miss this show at all. I took my 64 year old rockstar Mom along with me because she's a metalhead herself and we couldn't miss this opportunity. Plus, Mom and I just couldn't stop headbanging to every song Rammstein played and we were in section 226, which was an excellent experience and I uploaded some videos myself on KZread. By the way, to all of you on here, Rammstein is one of my all time favorite bands and definitely the greatest band you will ever since live, which is why I recommend you all to one day go to their concert. 🎸🤘

I'm from Germany, and I can confirm that Ramstein causes a huge devide in germany. Either you love them, or you don't. The don't people refer to them as Nazis. I allways loved Ramstein. I'm born 73, and considered myself lucky to Experience something new, a sound we never heard before. Funny note, when ever you start playing a Ramstein song, people regonize it imediatley as Ramstein after 5 sec.

In my opinion Rammstein is rather a very liberal act when it comes to worldview and attitude. I don't know why anyone say that people see them as Nazis. It doesn't take a PhD in history to see that Rammstein art in opposition to Nazi social model. Such a weird accusation. Good that you denied it. Thank you for your explanation. I've also noticed that social division you talk about. Some people seem to dislike them because of the irony and sarcasm they incorporate into everything, questioning history taught at school and playing with symbols, demystifying them. The band has a special place in my heart. My aunt was a huge fan and shared her passion with me. She translated the lyrics for me and explained stories behind them. I remember asking her to write the text phonetically. She refused, saying it was a crime against the language. She was the last generation who spoke German since birth and I think she wanted to inspire me to learn. I'm 26 now, my aunt's dead. All I have is memories and I regret we never went for a concert together. I'm sorry I got bit nostalgic. It's beautiful to see that art brings different people together. All best.

Yes, it was a very positive experience. A very grounded man. Paul was mocking my little sister who wanted an autograph ..of course with her than 15 years of age, she didn't got it, that he was just kidding her and was insulted..lol..i told him..c'mon don't do this to her. we both were laughing a little about this ..she was even more insulted, still didn't got it and i took her home. I was born in Russia in 1993, Rammstein was the 1st band i remember falling in love with, they took Russia by a STORM, their song Halleluja was my JAM! (3 year old me rocking out to Rammstein was a thing). Ive listened to them pretty much my whole life, and as my music tastes have changed through out my life, not once did i stop listening to them. Their music is phenomenal, and honestly never in my life did I think id ever see them live. Last month, I saw them live in LA, and what a performance. HUGE check off my bucketlist. I dont think we will ever find someone quite as unique as them. Plus i dont think many bands make as many awesome songs as they do. Rammstein will never die.

Till's martial goggle glasses were very popular in the Berlin techno scene in the 90s. Their show visuals are actually also inspired from the underground techno parties that were going strong in Berlin back then, but their hearts beat for metal music, of course. This is probably the most well planned out “professional” band to date. These guys did it all the right way with very calculated moves and homework. They all stayed relatively sober and are still going strong to this day. Any new band needs to take notes from these guys. You have Till, an ex Olympic, built swimmer with growling spoken vocals to the swagger of the the rest of the guys (each awesome in their own right) and then their awesome keyboard player Flake that plays those sweet choir like voices and has no issues with having live performance based comedy thrown his way. Plus that German swagger they have is awesome. This band has done internally what very very few have accomplished to date. Rammstein is why no band should have a “this is the way we’re supposed to sound attitude” and just make music and see what happens.

This band has some of the most simplistic songs, but they all sound incredible. Whether intentional or not, it's definitely awesome! The fact they were constantly shut down and deemed "too offensive" yet still made an amazing career out of it just makes me love them more lol. @@rugierro It was Richard who started all that as he had been seeing a therapist alone while living in New York. There are two types of group therapy. One type is overseen by a facilitator where the members bring individual problems and everyone else asks further questions and offers suggestions and support. The other type is where a group of related people air problems they have with each other and it is overseen by a therapist whose job is to get to the bottom of the issues they have with each other. An example is family therapy. I tried to get a neighbour arbitration service involved when I had problems with neighbours twice but the male neighbours didn't want to know. The arbitrators will get to the bottom of what you really want rather than deal with what is on the surface. The neighbours probably didn't want to get to the bottom of why they were behaving like they did.

I am German so probably it's easier to find some content, but he gives an extremely uncomfortable impression when he's not performing on stage. Also he expresses himself in a very strange manner. He is really weird... Often, they put up Flake or Richard for longer interviews.

I heard Du Hast on the radio in 1998, the only time I have heard them on the radio in the US. It surprised me to hear music in German, the old country as my grandparents called it. I was stationed in Frankfurt AM at Rhein Main AB in 1989 when the wall came down. I saw the people stumbling to our side, looking amazed and like they were in some dream world. My family came from small towns near Dresden, on the east side of Germany, so I felt a bit of kinship with those guys when I found out where they were from. Thousands of miles apart, but so familiar. Our German communities stopped speaking German in public back in 1918, when a man was tarred and feathered in the town where I was born. So my grandparents were the last to learn it until my daughter. They would not teach it in our public schools until the late 1990s. I have been slowly learning more, and the band has helped with that. Its difficult to learn a language when you have nobody to converse with using it. I could get the idea when someone asks me questions back in 89-91, but usually could not reply other than ja or nein. A nice older lady asked me something about where the train was headed and what time it would arrive at its destination, and while I knew what she wanted to know I could not tell her in German. Apparently I blended in perfectly for some reason. I finally got to see the band live in Chicago, first at Open Air in the soccer stadium, the sound was incredible and the pyrotechnics amazing. You could FEEL all of it not just hear and see it. Then I saw them in another open but covered venue a year or two later, the same place I saw Ozzy withy Black Sabbath.. another band that has had a profound effect on me. I saw Alice Cooper in 1986, and that was the best show I had ever seen, until I saw Rammstein live.\ I was stationed in Frankfurt with friends who were at Flugtag the year of the crash, its hard to forget something like that. One of my roommates said he had been standing where they jets came down just fifteen minutes earlier. Close calls are common working with aircraft like we did. My two and a half years in Germany were some of the best I have ever had in my 53 years. It felt like home in some respects. I wish I could return and travel more, especially to Dresden.
