The RN wants a Frigate not designed for front line fighting? Shouldn't they consider a Corvette for that roll instead?

Same hull as the new type 26 with cheaper mission systems, no electronic silent running engines, it does not have the same sub hunting ability as well, not sure what else is different. One thing for sure, i keep looking at that mission bay, you can throw in a shit load of vertical launchers, side launched torpedoes, mixture of side launched interception missiles with more vertical cells in the center. Don't know about the radar difference between the type 26 and type 31.

@@Baseshocks The RN has too few hulls to build a ship that isn't made for front line service, especially one that is close to but "not quite" a real frigate. If they build such a ship, the reality is that it will end up in front line service. They will be needed to replace front line units that inevitably will go into drydock for one reason or another. This is especially true for front line units that will go into long term refit. If they want a corvette, then build one and call it that. Don't pay for a ship that is to light to be heavy and too heavy to be light.

@@manicmute9440 Perhaps not, but it is what it is. Call it whatever you want. It's too lightly armed for combat against the types of ships it may have to face. I understand that the RN needs to get its numbers up at a realistic price. But buying ships that can't do the job it will realistically have to do is a waste of money. Again, the RN has to few hulls for that. And on top of that they will have to carriers to protect. The British government needs to stop fucking around and get the RN back to where it needs to be to meet the commitments it has.

Once again the first words uttered about the ships capabilities are it can be used to deliver aid. First thing Mod needs to understand it is either a warship or a disaster, emergency relief ship it cannot be designed to do both, that is why our navy is crap at present. to many Admirals not enough sailors.

Did the Falklands War not teach the UK MoD anything? All the Type 31 designs here remind me of the gun frigate Amazon Class and they proved very vulnerable in real combat. Plus we all know the models display the fully equipped design but the Royal Navy will end up with the cheap version, "designed for" blah blah but not equipped with nonsense.

They won't be Amazons, there will be no aluminum to burn or crack and there will be sufficient room to upgrade with future equipment, the two biggest failings of the type 21. It would be great to have 10 type 45, 18 type 26, 3 carriers and a 12 astute class subs but not enough people are willing to pay, although those who don't want to pay will be the first to complain about short sighted government when the RN is really needed.

simon forrester honestly another 2 t45s would be good. And realistically 10 type 26. If the royal navy had them then sure buy some type 31s to bolster the navy up. Plus 2 carriers, 4 ssbns and I'd say 10 Ssn.

These won't be anything like the Amazon class but of course not as good as the Leander (for its time), that will be the Type 26's role. These will be for maritime surveillance, anti piracy and smuggling, and mostly costal patrol but with the capability for combat. It would be great to have 10 Type 45, maybe 12 Type 26, 8 Type 31, 2-4 carriers, and far more attack and ballistic subs. Sadly, the public won't vote in anyone who could harm their chance of not having to work. But, Scotland leaving could give us some more money. The RN is obviously the most important branch and it is shameful that our socialistic views have taken over for greed.

Looks like a sound design; obviously cheap and undergunned, but with enough space and displacement to do a complete 360 on that decision, should the need arise. Not everything can be a fleet destroyer or a heavy cruiser you know. The RN needs a lot of ships to protect their trade routes, which is why they had a lot of [minimally specced] light cruisers in WW2, very light by international standards. Also, did the people commenting here; forget the need for corvettes during that conflict? Coastal ships being pushed into ocean crossings. They didn't even have enough of the cheap and nasty escort destroyers. It wasn't until the River class frigate, before the RN finally had the ship it wanted; which was a mix of essentially all the most palatable compromises. This ship has the ability to turn into a very well armed frigate, so will do fine.

looks like really different priorities compared to the Russians, who packed a shitload of missiles to whatever warship they design. Even their smallest ships like Buyan-M/Karakut class can pack 8 Kalibr/Onix cruise missiles in their design.
