DS4 E-Tense 225 BHP 1.6l PHEV Review | Unsung Hero?
Let's take a look at the DS4, DS is to Citroen what Lexus is to Toyota but does it manage to pull off that premium look and feel.
We look at the exterior, cabin, boot and of course, take the car for a drive.
My reviews are independent and honest, always and give you my honest thoughts after spending 5/6 days with the car and using it as my daily driver.

You can’t see many of these on the road but I quite like it, bit of unusual kind of design but DS loves being ‘different’ from the competition. Nice review Jim 👍🏻

I am in a minority but I am a French car fan. So music to my ears. Some of the quietest, smoothest comfortable cars imo. Never had electrical problems people have. Had a life of them back as far as 2cv6, renault 4 onwards. Newest one is 2007 though 😂. Its the ride that I love

Great review Jim. We’ve got the DS-4 in that colour. We’re really enjoying it. We’ve just got the 1.2 litre 3 banger and it’s surprisingly refined. Never short of power thanks to the 8 speed auto box. It’s rare too. We’ve had it since December and haven’t seen another one on the road yet. We did indeed get a good lease deal. Cheers, Ant Cooke

@@DefinitelyNotAGuru one problem is that you can only have them serviced at DS Salons. You can’t take them to the Citroen dealer. My nearest is over an hour away. So for each service, recall or issue I lose at least a days work. It’s my one regret. I wouldn’t have leased it knowing that.

  • @DefinitelyNotAGuru

Really? How daft is that? You’d think it would be any Stellantis dealer really but certainly any Citroen one.

@@DefinitelyNotAGuru They want to be fancy and luxury, hence calling it a Salon. There is nothing luxuirous about going to Stafford. 😁

I did consider buying one of these last year. The interior was very pleasant and plush but I interior was short on space as was the boot. The bonnet area was also almost identical to my old Citroen C4 and at this point, I legged it out of the dealership! It looks like the German brand are still trouncing the DS - I rarely see one on the road.

A new premium badge is always difficult to sell in the UK, Lexus wasn’t an overnight success and Genesis has had a much tougher ride in this country than it has in the US for example. Infinity didn’t work here either. I wish there was a bit less badge snobbery here as the wider public often misses out on some great alternatives 👍

I think DS has two problems. 1)DS have not done enough to separate the brand from Citroen, Vauxhall, Fiat and, people don't want to pay premium prices for a car associated with the latter brands 2) Reliability. (Citroen were the only brand I used to purchase, in spite of constant issues with reliability and electronics and I was so looking forward to taking delivery on a DS4 until I opened the bonnet and saw much similarity to that of my old C4). DS poor sales are not just restricted to the UK but globally too. DS set itself ambitious targets based on the timeframe for Audi to become a sales success, with Lexus being its key target. There's only a few countries in Europe, including France where DS outsells Lexus. It had promising sales in Greece but even that has dwindled. Argentina, was were DS was hoping by now, to be the best selling Premium brand had initial success but again sales are dwindling in that country. Despite of poor sales, I think the DS brand will still be profitable as a result of parts sharing...

Yes, I was recently tempted but it possibly has the wet timing belt engine which puts me off as I generally like to take cars past 6yrs/60000 miles. Also, dealerships are not quite handy for servicing and warranty work with my closest being 40 miles away - wasn't sure if Citroen dealerships are allowed to undertake warranty work? This is perhaps a prompt for one of your investigations regarding disappearing dealerships with even large cities no longer having dealerships for particular large brands any more!

The wet belt system on these works brilliantly well (unlike the Ford system), as long as it’s serviced as it should be using the correct oil it will be completely fine. I’ve had a personal car with the 1.2 wet belt before without any concerns.

I considered the DS4 , however they took the bad habits from German premium and took it a step further in terms of having all desirable features as options. Rivoli for example which is a higher trim has leather electrical seats but...not heated, that's part of a package. The only good trim to have is Opera but that's bloody expensive so I said no , with regrets to DS4.
