Drying Herbs Living Room-Style: Have you tapped the herbal bounty?
Bring in those herbs now, if you haven’t already, and dry them for your winter herbal larder.
Life brings us bounty and drying is one option to tap that flow. Join me in the living room for a quick glimpse into drying herbs. Plus you’ll get to meet my ancient-drying-rack-of-a-friend.
Why not fatten your herbal larder right now? I encourage you to go out there and harvest your leafy friends before frost hits. Good options are mints (the Menthas), lemon balm, lemon verbena, sacred basil, comfrey, sage, hardy marjoram, and really any leafy green / herb that looks healthy.
True, some of the aromatics will be milder, but that’s okay, these will still make tasty food and tea. In the case of comfrey, its leaf is in prime form for making herbal infused oil.
Sipping tea we forage ourselves always feels more nourishing and healing, and is more ecologically sane. Plus tea-gifts made from our hands are a delight to receive-the holidays are just around the corner.
Happy herb drying!

I love your living room almost as much as I love your kitchen! Part of the reason I watch your videos is so that I can spend some time in your kitchen. ❤️❤️

You are sweet! Thank you for watching the videos.
Love your wooded (clothes) drying rack! I got a lovely maple fold up (clothes) drying rack as well, from a second hand shop, and I LOVE it! I use the spread out rack covered with a sheet with the dehumidifier underneath to cure the herbs, rather than drying. I often don't have enough room under there so find other places. I put herbs on paper bags on top of the fridge where they dry quickly. I like using baskets to collect and dry herbs as well. I love working with the natural feel of wood and fibers for my tools.

Thanks for your comment. Can you say more about curing vs drying and what herbs do you cure? Would love to see your maple rack too.

Thank you!!!
What a beautiful drying rack! I now will not only be picking all my herbs before the first frost, but will also be on the lookout for a vintage piece to upcycle into a new piece for my herbs. :)

Welcome!
Dina, I understand the air drying of the bountiful herbs, but is freeze drying them a better option (or not)? I have a home freeze dryer, therefore; I must ask because I want the most benefit from my herbs! THANKS In advance! Kim

Hello Kim, I can not speak about freeze drying as I have not done this. Please keep me posted. thanks.
I also use a clothes drying rack for drying my herbs. Works great.

Thank you, Therese! Be well, Dina
Okay, I'm going to give this a go this season. I have used a dehydrator in the past and hated the outcome. All the herbs I dried ended up tasting like grass. Maybe it was too much heat, I will give this a go. Thank you!

Yes, sounds like you may have dehydrated with too much heat. Generally speaking, best to stick around the 100F range.
Hi Dina, Im beginning my herbal journey. Was searching elecampane and found you. Question with drying herbs should i wash them first? My experience is that when i do they most times get moldy. I live in a very humid climate. I not at what stage do you wash the herbs?

Hello Mariposa, welcome to the herbal journey. Roots have to be washed after harvest, and then thoroughly dried before storing. I suggest using a dehydrator for drying roots, especially if you live in a humid climate. For above ground plant parts, no need to wash (from my general experience), and again if you live a humid climate, best to use a dehydrator, or create / find something similar- a place that has low humidity, about 100 F degrees temp, and good air flow. Hope this helps.
Where do you get your clothing, or do you make it yourself? I love loose, lightweight clothing, but it isn’t easy to find.

I tend to wear linen that are either hand-me downs, items founds at second hand shops, clothing swaps, or when on sale. The "Flax" brand is what you see in this and many other of my videos.

It looks like a medieval kirtle. Not difficult. Some rectangles, a few triangles. Hmmm...something to do this winter!

Yes!!!
Do you wash the herbs first or go straight to drying? I have a ton of lemon balm in my garden and would love to dry some.
@DinaFalconi

Good question. I don't wash, if the herbs are clean and free of debris, which is how I to pick them. Happy lemon balm drying!
I like your wood rack. Not so beautiful, I just use old window screens that are set between a table and couch in one room (where ever they can fit) that I can get a lot of plant material on... I just need to label it, as I forget what is there (between mint varieties, for instance). I also use a small portable wardrobe that zips up with thrift shop lace curtains as shelves for air flow and a mini dehumidifier going at the base. (Keeps great color and dries nicely.... copied from She Is Of The Woods 'curing cabinet'). I just need more gallon glass jars to hold everything once dried... any ideas for storage? (Another video...)

Thanks, I enjoy picturing your home herbal drying operations: screens wherever they can be supported plus that curing cabinet sounds great.
