Dry Dog Food Cutting at Rampart Rapids - Stan Zuray
For as long as anyone can remember people have been cutting and drying fish on the Yukon River and multitudes of other rivers everywhere. While still common in Alaska the large scale practice of it is becoming a thing of the past elsewhere. Drying fish is necessary to reduce the weight for traveling and preservation in warmer weather. The weight of food needed to feed dogs makes up most of the load when a trapper heads out on the trail for multiple nights. Whole frozen fish is not an option so it must be dried. I have cut an average 1000 fish each year since 1973. Everyone cuts it different but results are pretty much the same. The much prized King salmon are used for people food only, but species such as Chum and Coho salmon and many whitefish types are used for both dog and people food.

Absolutely understood that dogs must to eat especially in the winter. I want to say only that in my country each fish which u cutting for drying cost lots of money. Yes, they are very expensive. Beautifull piece of fish and they are delicious taste. I love it. Dogs are very lucky 😉 I know they are necesary for living on Yukon river, Alaska. U are real Yukon men. It is but sometimes life is so busy I hardly have time to appreciate it. When I'm behind on the chores and it's rainy and the dog food on the fish racks are not drying well and the flies are getting on it and on and on - well you get the picture. It ain't a Princess tour of Alaska.

Any tips on what that knife sharpener is that you use at the start of the video? Looks like you get great results with it. And thanks for your vids, love them.
@stanzuray
3 жыл бұрын
It's a cheap one. Basically a v notch made of two carbide strips and you run the knife through. Every now and then I use a stone to take the thickness out of the edge (or a grinder) but this thing smooths out the cutting edge and puts that razor edge back on real fast and saves on using the stone all the time. I use and try all sorts of things and not stuck on any one even after 45 years of fish cutting.
Hermoso gracias bella es llevar esa vida .🤗

So we can cut, hang, dry, and store over the winter in critter proof structure with no issues? How long into next spring will they last if kept dry?
@jpdunamislodge

Im looking to supplement my store bought dry dog food with our extra salmon. Will be cooking the dried fish, adding veggies, making more of a paste not a wet soup.
@stanzuray

We move our fish to Tanana from our fish camp 40 miles away but it's stored on racks closer together as it's mostly dry then. Our climate here is mostly dry so molding is not to much an issue. In a damp climate like Hawaii the fish would not dry never mind not mold when dry so some places this all would not work. In the next spring and into summer any oily fish left starts to go rancid but the dogs eat it anyway. We occasionally have bear or wolf problems but most by far stay away as they know better and teach their young the same for the most part. Some places this is not true and bears etc are a big problem I hear. We right now have an old big wolf that has killed 4 sled dogs in the village and attacked others. It's rare but things do happen when animals get old and desperate. Everyone is keeping close tabs on kids and carrying guns.

Love Tanana. Very pretty. Greetings from Ukraine!
What do you feed your dogs for a full diet? Can I feed dogs just with deer meet?
@stanzuray
7 жыл бұрын
95% fish. not the best but it works. My later life has allowed for a better diet but only talking about a couple of 5 gal. buckets of fat and 5 bags of commercial for the whole kennel per year so it's still mostly fish. Imagine deer meat would be better than fish

Stan How far from the nearest town do you live and can you get to a doctor if you get sick. You mentioned the salmon are for the dogs in the winter, do you trap for animals in the winter.?
@stanzuray
5 жыл бұрын
The salmon being cut in the video are for dogs but they are also used for people food but cut differently somewhat. I trap using the dogs each and every winter for 45 years now. Now I live on the outskirts of a village of 225 people which is far from any other village and 150 air miles from the nearest city of Fairbanks. There is a small health clinic here but hospital is Fairbanks.
How long does that table last for typically?
@stanzuray

Must be 20 years old and it's rotting away. It has seen better days but is onlt for heading and gutting and dog food.
Stan how do you keep the grizzlies from attack your fish racks?
@stanzuray
4 жыл бұрын
For 99% of the bears and wolves it is a matter of them knowing better and being taught that by their mothers. Bears and wolves up here have an entirely different attitude about humans. Occasionally we have to scare one away or shoot one if it comes into camp more than once.
Lovely office that
Каждый народ делает по своему. Интересно.
are the dogfood salmon also brined before drying or is that just for the peoplefood salmon (flavoring and keeping mades out?)?
