Dry Brushing for Lymphatic Drainage of the Face, Head, and Neck - By a Lymphedema Physical Therapist

Dry Brushing is suggested to be a tool to help keep the lymphatic system healthy and moving. Dry brushing for lymphatic drainage is used by some to try and reduce swelling, but it's mostly used for skin health and signs of aging, via exfoliation. It's a tool for lymphatic drainage massage, as well, but must be used gently to avoid skin breakdown. Generally, most videos or blogs will tell you to brush towards the heart, but as a certified lymphedema therapist, I show you in this video how the lymphatic system works and what would be the best technique to do dry brushing for lymphedema or your lymphatic system to be most effective. It's important to note that Dry Brushing has anecdotal evidence only at this time, but if cleared by your provider and done safely, some may find benefit.
After creating the dry brushing video for the body (see link below), It was highly requested to show how to properly dry brush the face and neck. So, in this video, I show how the head and neck lymphatic system works and what would be the best technique to do dry brushing for your lymphatic system.
00:00 : Intro
00:46 : What is Dry Brushing?
01:02 : What is the benefits on the Lymphatic system?
01:56 : When to Dry Brush and what to avoid
02:31 : Understand the Lymphatic System
03:32 : Showing how to Dry Brush the Face and head/neck area!

Hello everyone! I have taken the feedback from another video about remembering to pull my hair back and for all of the newer, face videos I have made this switch (along with removing all music). I appreciate the kind, respectful feedback. And going forward I’ll adjust it 😊 thank you for the grace as I still learn how to do this video thing! 🤷🏼‍♀️😂

Great videos and content! One interesting observation: you mention that dry brushing is a “new technique” for lymphatic drainage. It is relatively new in America, but it is an old ancient technique of Ayurveda used in India, about 2000 years old or more!

I don’t have any problems . I just do these lymph drainage massage because my skin tone was uneven and my face gets so puffy from PCOS these massages make me feel beautiful I tried only for 3 days and I got many compliments from family that my face looks much slimmer and brighter . So I’m guessing this helps brighten skin.

Dry brushing is very good for skin, it helps to tighten and smoothen skin. You will be amazed by the smoothness of your skin after brushing for a week. Cellulite will also look less prominent after sometime. It declogs pores, black heads and white heads also loosen. There are just too many benefits

Thank you Kelly! I swear that I can feel immediate improvement. And that’s surprising, because so little pressure is being applied to the skin tissue. It’s hard to visualize what’s happening under the skin, in the lymphatic system-it’s hard to imagine that enough fluid is moving to make any difference. Yet, I can feel the effect, even if I can’t visualize it.

I’ve tried the brushing for other areas like my legs to help with cellulite and brushing the lymphatic areas up towards the proper direction but I didn’t see a difference and someone mentioned it has to be “deep tissue massage. I’m new to learning about the lymphatic system.

I do dry brush regularly not knowing I'm helping my lymphatic drainage I just don't coz I don't develop sagging skin my skin is shiny and renewed. And still confident on my shorty shorts at age of 42. But knowing now that it helps my lymphatic drainage I feel like it's worth the time I'm taking before jumping in the shower.

Can you tell me about the qualities of a good brush? How many times a week should I apply oil or shower after?

Cancer Rehab PT: Can you do a video for lymphatic drainage that seems to be stagnant in the area below the knee up to the inner groin area. I had liposuction done on my knees years ago and I'm concerned that my lymph glands might have been injured or damaged and would like your thoughts on how I can dry brush to help drain this area. The surgery was done on the inner knee and on top of the knee. Thank you.

IAwesome! love this video! I always have a puffy face & sinus pressure...hopefully this will help! I currently do dry brushing on the backs of my thighs. I brush from knee-cap to buttocks is this correct? I didn't see a link to purchase the small soft dry brush you demonstrated with. May I please have that link as I feel dry brushing my head region will be very benefical!
