Light touch works for him...constantly dancing over the drums...wish I can do that with my band

Very smooth & fast...for most of the time he likes to play busy, means to play many notes which is hard to duplicate by any other drummer

The best part about Dave is how he backs a band and keeps time. (IMO)

Some time ago and after more than 20 years of practicing, I realized you can get a great, big, open sound without "hammering" the surfaces, as many drummers do - it's enough to "drop" the stick, much like you'd throw a tennis ball to the ground. You let it go at some point in its travel and let it bounce back to your hand. Throw it quicker or with more force and it will come back quicker and do more noise. You don't even need to have a strong grip to put force on the ball, it's that first "push" what counts. I'd bet he realized this way before and it's his "secret". Of course the sticks have a big part on this - their balance and their weight. You'd need to apply more "push" to a light stick, say a 7A, vs. a "heavy" stick that you can literally drop and gravity will do the job for you.

It doesn't matter what top skills the drummer has - what matters is the music as a whole and the composition. That means song material, arrangement, orchestration, the quality of the fellow musicians! And David Weckl was lucky enough to play with the best composers and musicians of his generation, like so many other top-talented drummers. This lively scene hardly exists these days, the prospects of being involved in various projects in the long term and earning enough MONEY are extremely minimal. In a word: There is a lack of incentive and prospects to take the risk of becoming a professional musician and practice many hours a day for years. Hardly any studio jobs, few well-paid live gigs and rarely a major national tour or even world tour with any well-known stars. It's no longer worth it to become a top musician given today's conditions!
