Drumming Fisher and Marten Pelts with a Fur Tumbler

Спорт

In this video I use a fur tumbler to clean up my marten and fisher pelts from this past trapping season. The tumbler works pretty nicely at cleaning up the pelts, getting rid of the grease and mud, and gives them a shine!

I got my tumbler by buying my wife a new dryer. I disabled the heating element so it just tumbles and blows air. Smaller capacity but it works.

Also a great way to dry muskrats before skinning

Hardwood sawdust. Is also a good medium for absorption of the contaminated fur, plus when dirty you can use it to aid fleshing.

Very nice looking catch, well done. Having been to Fur Harvesters Auction and watched fur graders do their thing, each fur is handled for seconds. The graders know their trade. Fur is graded by size and quality. I've seen some very dirty Fur grade high and was told why. I also worked a sale as a porter showing buyers Fur. Handling hundreds of Furs a day, they are very fast and don't spend much time inspecting each Fur. I'm with you and how you think about this. It's a pride thing sending in the best product I can send in. Well put up and clean. It also shows the quality of an individual Fur which will grade for what it is. As one graders said about putting up hides, "you can't turn a $10.00 Fur into a $60.00 Fur but you can turn a 60 into a 10." Well done.

Thanks. I found it didn't work great with the beaver pelts, they are too large and stiff, not much tumbling action.

A friend of mine uses cedar sawdust and to lighten up his first of coyotes especially he uses baby powder along with the cedar sawdust. Cedar has a nice smell and if it’s completely dry it will have no pitch like pine or spruce. but that’s what he uses to lighten up his coyotes I hope it’s some used to you. So God bless stay safe and all the best to you and your family in the new year ✌️🇨🇦

Great video and explanation! No question it is always nice to go that extra step as you owe it to your quarry you harvested. Is that a 45 gallon drum and what size motor? Likely do coyotes as well? I don't have a lot of room so smaller the better. Cheers!
