Drummer reacts to "Too Rolling Stoned" by Robin Trower

Thank you to our patron Roy L for this wonderful return to Mr. Trower. I distinctly remember y'all mentioning this song on some Procol Harum videos we've done so when I saw this request on Patreon, I was looking forward to it. Wow, this is so different then Procol. This has more of an edge to it... I dig it a lot.

There's not a bad song on the album. It's in my list of top 10 albums ever. Hard to believe it's been 50 years makes me feel old.👍

100 percent. I originally had the LP, then a CD , and now digital. Always one of my favorites.

Yeah, I can still listen to the entire album. I was 15 when it came out.
Ahh James Dewar. Soulful singer/bassist.
A guitar album for guitarists. To hell with everyone else! The tone on that guitar has been known to peel paint off walls. The guitar tone is unreal.
This one is kinda special to me. The very first LP I ever bought was ROBIN TROWER LIVE. Such a great guitarist yet so unknown to so many. This is gonna be goooooood!
If you enjoy blues-based guitar-driven rock, this album is perfection.
Nice to see a young buck digging on the music that this grandma, 64 years old, listened to 50 years ago! What a groove this whole album was and is.

You’re not alone. I’m 63. I first heard his music on a small [ but powerful] FM radio station, that was the only one that would play what no other station would dare. KSHE-95, St.Louis. 📻🙂

Saw this tour when this album came out at the Philly Spectrum. Great album! The whole album is worth a listen!
This is real music, for grown ups.

EXCELLENT observation, there!!!
"Stark: When I listen to the recently released re-master of Bridge of Sighs, which was recorded back in 1973, is still so fresh and not dated at all. Trower: No, a lot of that is down to the engineer. Geoff Emerick was the top of the tree around that time. He'd done the Beatles stuff. The thing about him is he was very musical and had incredible musical ear. It wasn't just sound to him, it was music. Stark: How was it recorded? Trower: Mostly live in the studio, some of the solos as well, but mostly we would put down a backing track and I would do the solo and Jimmy the vocals on the top. Things like the long solo on Too Rolling Stoned and Little Bit of Sympathy - they are live."

Thanks for that!!!!! I actually remember that the person who bought this album for me for my 21st Birthday that summer of '74, told me that Emerick produced it, knowing that would interest me, as a huge Beatlemaniac. The production on this album is just fantastic, and I agree with Robin that his production is what makes if still sound fresh today.
Not only is Robin Trower a true "Master of the Stratocaster", but he makes the best "Guitar Face" around. Check out some of his live footage for confirmation. I've had this album since 1974, and it is never too far from my turntable.
The real 'Bridge Of Sighs" is in Venice, Italy, and is called that because it was the last look at the world that condemned prisoners had before they went to the gallows.
Well I 'liked' already... Lol, and now I'm commenting. 😊 I LOVE THIS ALBUM AND ROBIN TOWER SOOOO MUCH 🎶 BLUES GREATS. SERIOUS, THIS WHOLE THING IS AWESOME! 'THANKS' ❤
Great request Roy L.
Saw Him in 1977 , AWESOME SHOW!! 🔥🎸😍😁
Robin Trower Live from 1975 is one of my favorite albums.
I saw Robin Trower twice, and James Dewar is by far the best singer I've ever seen in person.
Good intro for ya' to Trower! one of my favorite bands ! Robin still going!
Thanks for this song. When this came out, it was a total departure from his previous sound. Robin has a very thick sweet sound that is hard to do on a stratocaster. Couple that with James Dewar who in my opinion rivals Paul Rodgers in as one of the greatest vocalists. Later on Bill Lordan, Sly Stones drummer joined the bad. The rhythm section always had a more R and B sound than a lot of hendrix influenced stuff. When I was a young guitar player we saw him at the old capital center in largo maryland . His equipment trucks with all the lights etc. didn't get there for the show. It didn't matter, they killed it. Saw him in the 90s at a club. Got pretty close. Still playing and he sounds awesome. Thanks, what a teenage flashback!!
Great album
Got this album on vinyl and CD.
Saw him in 1987 at the trocadero in philly stood right in front of Robin and his speakers ears were ringing for 3 days. Saw him again in 2009 at house of blues in atlantic city he's still out there killin it
A living legend, seen him many times the past 30 something years. The last three recent tours he was better than ever, burned the house down every time!
The ad libs in the studio gives it that live feel. Who thought handclaps could add so much?

Ahhhh ok we were debating in the chat what was up with that. People were saying it was the crew and people said they dubbed the crowd noise in. I thought it added alot to the overall atmosphere of the song. Good shit 👏
WOOOHOOOO!!! LOVE ME SOME TROWER!!! :) RIP, to MR. DEWAR!! GREAT VOCALS!!! ENJOY, LEE!!
In my top 10 albums. Saw Trower a bunch of time and have tickets to see him in September! The 50th anniversary edition comes out June 7th!
ANOTHER PERFECT ALBUM, NOT A BAD SONG. GREAT REACTIONS. ROCK ON. 👊🖖
Love seeing you get into some Robin Trower. He's still going strong. The vocalist on this album, and many of his albums, James Dewar, passed away recently, unfortunately. Great guitarist. I love the slow jam that ends the song. Keep up the great work!
3 dudes and a white Stratocaster. Had. no idea how good they would be. Sept 3 1976 Greensboro Coliseum. My very first concert at 19. Keep up the great music, you rocking it brother. Check out some Kansas Masque.
You finally did my suggestion!! I won’t say “I told you so”

Lol it's OK, I won't be mad. This was fucking awesome 👌
I am priveleged to havs seen the Robin Trower power trio performed this live back in the day when this was new. James Dewar added so much in terms of bass and especially vocals to the incredible guitar of Robin Trower. Such greatness!!!
Yes!! Bridge of Sighs and Day of the Eagle are also Bangers!! I'm laughing because when this came out 50 years ago, this was the ultimate stoner album. 😂
1974. Senior year of high school. That was one of my favorite albums.
First rock concert I attended. MSG 1975.
Saw Trower live at Summerfest in Milwaukee about 10-15 years ago. Great performance!
As of this time, Robin is still performing. He is 72 years old. 📻🙂
ROBIN TROWER - " Somebody Calling"- Midnight Special 1977 AMAZING! SOUND & PERFORMANCE LIVE 🎸 very Creative Sliding Guitar Effects, it's Super Cool from start to finish+ Awesome Bass & Drums Phenomenal vocals Highly Recommend this Classic too
A great voice, Dewars soulful vocals and driving bass line really gives the music a killer sound.
this is the big tune for Trower, but don't overlook 'Alethea' from the 'For Earth Below' record.
HAHA..... Robin Trower was in my back pocket for a future request.... But i'm sure we can think of another of his that you haven't heard yet... Fabulous British guitar player and the singer/bassist was stellar too. Listen to that muted guitar chuggling along behind the verse..... !!! Yet ANOTHER British blues player. And those sicks on the closed high hats....!!!! Wonderfully mic'd. Keep on Rocking young sir.
One of the very best albums of the 70's, or all-time, for that matter.
Live in Studio. Hendrix also had a jam long version of Voodoo Child 8+ min from Electric Lady Land with fans in the studio. Like this, a rare treat
Saw Robin in Phoenix, during Bridge of Sighs tour. Had some brownies, sat on the ground of Diablo stadium. I didn’t move for like two hours! Only partially due to the brownies, I assure you! Wow! Hella sunburn that day; typical Arizona outdoor concert!
I've been digging this album since high school. Also great from this album is a song called About To Begin. Robin Trower's guitar tone is to die for.
I saw Trower in State College, PA. :.....front row...great show.
That was just the guys in the studio hootin' and hollerin'
Robin Trower and James Dewar were pure magic. These 2 were perfectly matched. God I love their music. Rock n roll coupled to some blues - Lord have mercy this is good stuff.
Saw Trower in 74 at the Spectrum in Philadelphia when he was touring promoting this album. Took a hit of mescaline before going in. It took my hearing 3 or 4 days to return to normal. 😅
Awesome! You can definitely hear Hendrix in his playing
YES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's one of my favorite songs to play on guitar
This whole album is reaction worthy! This album was a masterpiece. One of my desert island choices for sure. The chemistry here is phenomenal. His first album has some incredible tracks as well. The title track and "Daydream" and "Hannah" are earth moving and should not be overlooked. And that's just the first two albums!
That was excellent! Ty, Roy!
Psychedelic blues, exactly 🎉
We wore this out in high school great stuff.
I love the Trower Live album and the “In City Dreams” album! I saw him in concert in the 80 (or maybe early 90s).
When I was a teenager listening to this album in 1974, I thought it was neat how the cover perfectly illustrated the album’s sound. Today I learned that James Dewar (so great) was the vocalist, not Robin Trower and that Too Rolling Stoned is my favorite now by far, not Bridge of Sighs, as it was back then. So interesting. A little revelation. 🙂 Thank you Lee and Roy! It was good to discover these things. I’m not the same as I was…
I used to have Bridge of Sighs on reel-to-reel. Not sure what became of it. Their first four albums are all equally outstanding, imo. I'd be hard pressed to pick one as my favorite. And I'd kill to have a uni-vibe of that vintage. Nothing else sounds like this and no one knew better what it was for than did Robin.
I saw them in the early 1980s at the Cellar Door in Richmond,Va.
When I was young this album was our speaker test and it destroyed many a high end speaker.
I saw Robin in the 80’s outdoors on the Detroit river with Koko Taylor, Eric Johnson and Robin wasn’t even the lead band. He played fantastic. Oh yeah, the main act for that event was the great blues man, B.B. King. 🧎♂️➡️🎸👍 oh. I also saw him at L.A. Coliseum in the 70’s with Star Castle and again not the main act. Jethro Tull was main act at the Too Old to Rock and Roll to Young to Die tour with Ian’s Tull-a-vision. 😊
Keep going bro...Over the Target , on this one .
Thanks.
Good choice. Thanks
The Devil Came From Kansas. She really did! 😊🎉❤
Roy! 👍
You gotta do the track "Bridge Of Sighs" and "Day of the Eagle"!!! Two of the greatest blues rock tracks ever! In the evolution of blues rock, Trower is the bridge between Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn.
❤
Love this song and Bridge of Sighs. I remember immediately buying it at Sears after hearing it on the radio. Sears...❤😂

@L33Reacts he's playing at The Birchmere in Alexandria in October. Go see him, he still kicks ass
Such a great album, still sounds great today. Not a bad track on it. Favorite is Bridge Of Sighs and In This Place together. Saw him live at a small club in Tulsa OK in 1984 or 1985 what a show. Victims Of The Fury is also a great album. .
My first album I bought when I got out of the Navy.
Great record / band !
I consider this the perfect rock song. The whole album is incredible. I'd recommend The Fool and Me for your next reaction video. The jam at the end could be 10 minutes longer and I'd still listen to it all. What sounded like "live" to you was just hooting and hollering, party noises. I like it too!
GREATEST ALBUM EVER OK,,,,,,,, 2 MORE SLEEPS LEFT,,,,, FRI 31 MAY HLOMFIRTH ROBIN TROWER LIVE ❤ THANKS A LOT FOR YOUR PODCAST,,,,,,,,, ERR WHILE IM HERE CHECK SOME OR ALL OF THE DRUMMING BY STEVIE WONDER ❤ ANYWAY,,,, WITH ROBIN ON THIS ALBUM ITS REG ISADORE ON DRUMS,,,, YES JAMES DEWER ON BASS N VOCALS,,, LOVE TO STAY CAT MORE AGAIN THANKS A LOT
I saw him twice. Once in the beginning when he first came out with this album. Can you open up for Humble Pie. And once a few years ago. About 3 years ago and he was just as awesome.
Great show!! Bridge of Sighs tour.
KZread...Meet The New Boss, same as the Old Boss. " I want my stapler"...😂❤

I was raised close to largo. Brandywine/Clinton area. Good ol pg County lol
Great album, btw.
Robin was the original guitarist for Procol Harum.
James Dewar was The Man... But it's a GREAT band, absolutely great
You got set up 🤭 you'll have to do the Title track - Bridge Of Sighs next, you should try Victims Of The Fury from his 1980 album
Robin Trower. An unapologetic disciple of Jimi Hendix.
Saw them Wichita falls. Tx I think 1979. Best light I ever saw. Except sir Paul.
saw him at house of blues in hollywood, amazing
Great album in my personal top five, 7 tracks the worst is fantastic !
What do you expect from a band named after the guitarist, a 3 minute guitar solo outro, no shade though, it's awesome! Bridge of Sighs is one of my favorites, it's so timeless, and I would bet someone in Soundgarden was a Trower fan, because I think Black Hole Sun is heavily influenced by that song. You might also want to check out Daydream from Robin Trower's first solo album, Twice Removed From Yesterday, it's his tribute to Jimi Hendrix, the psychedelic influence of a lot of his music, as you noted.
Robin Trower was the band name. Some bands had the leader's name, eg. Alice Cooper, Elton John.
This was such a good jam ... just awesome
I highly recommend that you check out BLT, (Bruce, Lordan and Trower). Great bass lines from Jack Bruce from Cream soon after the Super group broke up and of course Robin Trower. I love BLTs too and the albuy cover is a tempting photo of thy sandwich. Lol
