I'm impressed that Mr. White for the most part didn't miss a beat. Whenever I gig, I have at least 3 pairs of backup sticks easily accessible around different parts of the kit in case one goes flying or breaks. I personally have enough trouble holding on to the sticks sans tricks, so I keep the twirling to a minimum.

As a drummer I've always felt I was on an island behind my little, not many see me so hell yeah I'm gonna toss sticks and be flashy!! Also it is a way to give your hands and wrists a break sometimes, Lord knows about halfway through the final set before your day off you are sore and banged up.....so let's have some fun!!! some use it for timing purposes also. Hard to explain unless you're a drummer. Awesome recoveries...I love drummers that have fun playing...after all no matter your level, isn't that why we all play???!?!

Thats why never do stick tricks in live performances Its only good when you are playing in a studio or doing a drum cover as you can always retake the video I get the point that it looks cool and entertains the audience But dont forget that theres still a 1% chance you'll fail even if you're already so good at it

I rarely drop sticks bc I never learned how to do the flashy stuff. But I get paid to play the pocket. And that I can do very well.

Hot pocket! But seriously, that's the most important thing. Staying in the pocket.

In my first drum performance (in a contest) I performed a duett with another drummer. He dropped a stick (and it landed between all the stands) and he had to move his hihat to retrieve it since he had no backup. I was watching in horror and chugging along. And recently I hit the guitarist who came too close to the drums with a dropped stick. He was good at ignoring it.

Watch the Live in Pompeii version of Pink Floyd's "One of These Days". Nick drops a stick, grabs a new one, and never misses the beat.

Dropping a stick is natural. I have been playing drums professionally for 32 years and to call it a fail, no it is not! People who do call it a fail, does not know anything about drumming!

As a 20yr plus hobby drummer. This happens even with the biggest names in music its why every drummer always has extra sticks. Like the others have stated missing the beat is a fail. Same goes for guitar players as well.
