Have had lessons with Jay - the hi-hat pulse on the left foot is literally the first thing he teaches as else your other limbs have nothing to mesh with during polyrhythms!

  • @farn451

note an ounce of tension in him. that sweeping technique in the right hand and keeping that hi-hat jumping to keep the pulse. so relaxed and some chilled. every part of that kit is exactly where it needs to be, he's not reaching or straining to get to anything. perfect.

@@AndrewRooneyDrums The only thing I don't like it that it seems like Meinyl doesn't use the vocal track in their videos. The clean vocal hook is actually done by Jared as he's drumming. If you do choose to watch it I would watch the music video after, explains some of the choices made when you realize he has to sing a harmony at the same time.

Going back and forth across cymbals like that actually preserves them longer because you direct the energy across the cymbal not through

The hand technique is his secret sauce... Those tiny little changes in spacing between notes that he gets is all in that wee whip he does and the hold back... Its such a gnarly technique to try pick up

Jay has been my favourite drummer for many years. His playing style is sooo airy. His playing is all about the silence between the hits. I've had the opportunity to have a drum lesson with him. He has an unique way of teaching. Very educational. A very warm and down to earth guy in person. I've been playing drums for about 37 years, but I won't ever reach his level of drumming. Some just have what it takes to become this good.

Hi, Andrew! That was a really cool segment. Love his rack tom configuration, three across the top and a big floor tom, cool! His playing is like oil flowing in an engine. Love it. I really like the symmetry of your new studio. If I may make a suggestion; just behind your left shoulder is high hat stand. To balance your studio it would be interesting to have a bass guitar leaning against the wall just behind the high hat stand. It would fill a void while being in context with your studio. My apologies if I seem presumptuous. Regards, Alex G.

I've been waiting for more Jay Postones on your channel for a while now; he's got deeper pockets than Jeff Bezos! If you haven't already seen it; there are a lot more Meinl videos of him that have previously been released; "Juno" is an incredible one to explore, similarly "Sacrifice" is a very tasty listen. It's also nice that the Meinl videos are purely instrumental, so you get the drums as a focus while retaining context, but not having vocals shining brightly (Not that Tesseract's vocalist Daniel Tomkins isn't great in his own rights...). I may be remembering incorrectly; but I believe he is self-taught to be a drummer, I'm sure people in the comments can correct/verify if I am correct in my memory or not however :)

This type of swagger almost exclusively comes from playing live with other musicians. Practice at home gets you far but adapting to the variations, mistakes and improvisations of others will elevate your playing to a whole other level so never turn down playing live with others even if the music isn't your preference.

As a Spanish speaker, your Spanish pronunciation is decent (I've seen you adress Mr. Estepario in Spanish a few times) but you don't need to make your voice extra nasal. Take that away and you'll sound more natural and less forced.
