The dude put out an amazing short video as a response to people accusing him of speeding up his videos. It was him playing one handed whilst holding a tablet with a stopwatch counting up to prove the video wasn't sped up and at the end he looks into the lens and says "if you people spent as much time practicing as you do hating, you'd be able to that, but you don't so you can't" or words to that effect. His speed is impressive, but his kit sounds bad and not to mention he's trading all that accuracy for speed.
He's a drummer that makes you want to quit. He's also a drummer that would tell you no, don't do that. Keep working. He's got a video called talent is a lie. It's all about practice being the thing that defines your ability, not some inherent quality. Love this guy.

I recently became aware of him. Love the guys skill, his attitude. But to directly comment on this talent is a lie video. It’s a bit of a stretch. The beginning of the video where he says he is embarrassingly bad, he’s freaking Better than 90 percent of people right there. Haha. So yes while he had to put in the time to get where he is, he has a natural born talent which gave him a much higher starting point. Also being born with a talent isn’t a bad thing and doesn’t diminish any hard work. I’m sure I can learn to write clearly with my left hand if I were to lose my right. However, using my right just comes naturally. Not an apples for apple comparison, but hopefully my point makes sense

@@DamageJackyl I’m not saying it’s impossible. You can absolutely excel at anything you put your mind to. For me. I can learn most anything and learn it quick and be definitely above average, if not high level at stuff. But I wasn’t born with maybe a specific skill but some do have a better ability to learn things. And some are with out a doubt born with talent. So I think both ends of the spectrum are true. But to deny that some people are just born more talented than others, to me is a little silly.

@ach You beat me to the comment. This was originally recorded by Mike Mangini. Portnoy left the band 3 years earlier. This tune came from their 2nd album with Mangini on drums. From what I read, the problem with the sound on the original recording was that they tried to recreate the drum sound on Images and Words and used drum triggers.
@OutOfOrderBerlin
3 жыл бұрын
@@dtfreak they definitely didn't use triggers on that record (they did on Images and Words). If so it would be the worst apply of drum triggers/samples in history. It's just a extremely compressed snare sound with a high amount of the bottom signal. They clearly wanted to get an 80s vibe of snare sound though. At that time his snare sounded live pretty much the same, too.

El Estepario Siberiano is without question the cleanest, most precise drummer alive today. Possibly ever! If you want to really be impressed, watch his newer one handed videos. Insane!
he also has a whole series of 1 handed drumming, usually playing heavy metal, and he is doing things like drinking a coffee, reading a book, or doing finger guns (for the double bass drum/machine gun type sounds). He has a video explaining how he manages to get that phenomenal sound out of an EAD10. The technique includes epic quantities of damping, removing most of the toms because they either block the sound or overwhelm it, and using crash cymbals as hi-hats. He does also do plenty of double pedal stuff but not for this song. Check out his "shorts" they are as outrageous as you'd expect given this video.

Thanks for sharing your view and impressions on this mad guy, Andrew. I'm a drummer, I've been following El Estepario Siberiano ("The Siberian from the Steppe" or "The Siberian Stepperian" in English) for a while and he was my 2020 drumming finding. I've never heard something this good with such a limited number of drum pieces. Incredible. It's too bad you can't follow his videos and streams on you tube since they're mostly in Spanish with the exception of some subtittles. In his videos he speaks about his different techniques, methods, his routines (this guy has been practicing 10 hours a day for the past ten years or so, every single day from 7pm in the morning, crazy routines). Another thing that amazes me is his sound signature and style. It's unique. Greetings from Spain. Cheers!
He also fills in those 16th note shuffles on the ride by supplementing his foot in on the hi hat to keep that groove going at the start.

One of the best Mark!
Possibly the best percussionist since Neil Peart yet he don't have but a 3 piece and plays like he has 6 sets of hands and feet. Awesome
I use the split finger grip all the time. I broke both of my hands and wrists some time ago and have a tendency to drop my sticks. The split finger grip on my right hand is something I switch to predominately on cymbal work so I don't throw my stick accidentally and primarily because of the great speed I can achieve for quick responsiveness on cymbals. By having the fulcrum between my fingers, I can use the other three digits to manipulate the back end of the stick faster than with the standard grip. Hope that helps!

In answer to your question about double kick, he recently (couple of months ago maybe) did a video about having to get a double pedal for an audition, first time he'd used one in many years apparently. Because his thing is those absolutely outrageous linear singles between hands and foot.
It's nice to come back after a couple of years and yeah, it is still awesome and inspiring.

Definitely!
Everybody knows how to pronounce his name now. He has achieved "super rockstar" status without even being in a band! And deservedly.

He said : "Why watch porn when you can play drums?" He loves Tool and Chris Coleman, that's the reason to love this guy!

I just stumbled upon him (Coleman) 2 years back. So much feel, musicality..has a passion in his touch a the best sound this side of Benny Greb.
De agora em dia, qualquer um que me diga que toca bateria, vou mandar ouvir "El Estepario Siberiano ". O cara é de outra galáxia.
Seeing the set up I was expecting not to be impressed. Boy was I wrong. That was a completely mind-blowing display of drumming. I long to have that kind of mastery where you can play such demanding pieces and it appear effortless. As for his hand grip, I've never seen that before but hell, it is definitely working for him.

How good is he!?
El Estepario Siberiano is my favorite youtuber. His drumming is insane
i use that weird fulcrum sometimes, but mostly when doing alot of stick tricks, also i find it easy to get faster, tighter rebound like that
I really like your videos, because they are actual reactions, there are tons of reaction channels out there who do „fake“ reaction or overacting, your channel is not among them. :D 👌🏻

Thank you!
I spent a few months watching this guy doing covers but stopped because it bugged me at how tight his snare was. Sounds a bit deeper now and bearable. This is the best I've seen him. Great drummer.

Yea, I died.
Ya know just by chance i have also discovered that fulcrum between 1st and middle finger. Its really useful to combat cramping or if you get a blister durin a gig and i find it way easier to do a one-handed galloping rhythm at speed Hold stick between fingers Close hand losely Rest tip of middle finger on stick Use base of palm and middle finger to control the bounce Flick the wrist and almost automatically 2 ghost notes follow
I had the exact same reaction today. I have known a lot of drummers, some famous and some extremely talented... but El Estepario blew my mind. This is what is known as "gifted" it is beyond talent and it is rare and a great pleasure to see and hear. And I only heard of him yesterday via a FB Reel he put out. Why I haven't heard of him before is unbelievable.
This man's name is _just_ as complex as his skills! He's the _God of Drums._

Do more El Estepario videos and yeah, he plays the double pedal and he's absolutey insane with it. 😂
His name translates to The Siberian Steppe... For those who don't know a steppe is a large area of grassland with no trees. 😁

Guys, I've checked with the friends who came with me to the gig, it was Mangini 🤣🤣 And not even sure they did that song... Was in London a few years ago 👍🏼
Incredible! Playing a Mike Mancini track (xy, maybe 15 piece drum kit) on his three piece setup giving even a shit on double bassdrum pedal! And how he plays: The groove, the power, the attitude! That´s the difference of the "new school drummers" (him, JD Beck, Richard Spaven, Nate Wood, Mike Giuliani, Benny Greb, Louis Cole [!!!] etc. etc.) to the "old school" gear bombasticos (Mancini, Harrison, Portnoy, Phillips, Bozzio [LMAO] etc.) which are also outstanding drummers, no question. But that´s the difference: the mindset... But it´s also been here before. I just want to mention one magic name: BONZO!!!
His one hand videos is also a lot of fun to watch, playing intricate melodies, and sipping from a can at the same time. He is both an impressive drummer, and a fun entertainer. He also say something like "I can only play 4/4, no more artistic stuff", so he indicates that he has limitations and knows it. He also indicates that he does practice from time to time, and breathes, that's about it. His artist name is somewhat difficult to remember. The Siberian Estepario would have been easier, if you are a Swede like me.

HAHA Zeig. That's not good!
He looks high AF, guess that’s how he can be in such a flow state. Simply amazing.
Hi. 35 years drumming and have a degree in anatomy and physiology. You are correct, he IS putting the stick btwn his index and middle finger but ONLY when playing the ride, as you can see his finger flip over the stick when he switches to the tom. Why would he hold a stick like that, you didn't ask?? Is there an advantage? He is clearly using the Moeller technique, which combined with his funky grip on a ride cymbal (hard metal with massive rebound) would work well together...for certain players. The muscles used to the flex the index and middle finger - think Spider Man fwipping his web shooter as compared to the traditional Indiana Jones using his whip motion 99.9999% of us use - are really beefy compared to the others (as well as a really deep one under them helping out), so seeing this doesn't surprise me. If you're at his level of talent and skill, it's a workable option that can be exploited, but only on the ride bc you really need massive rebound to make it practical and not just a gimmick or short cut to a goal. I remember trying this for 10 minutes the first year I was playing. It took 2 weeks for the skin in between my fingers to grow back. 😂 Anyway, that's my .02.
You got the Mike right, but not the Portnoy. I guess you meant Mangini, honest mistake.
