His manager is protecting the brand as he should. This is so unbelievably childish; yet this guy isn't smart enough to be embarrassed. Sitting at a super cheesy E kit. Southerner...checks out. This is classless in the drumming community. Dave and his team are really good people. I guess you have to do this to get views.

@@BeatKasterGHow relevant is Vinnie to young drummers? Or Gadd…I bet the vast majority of young drummers have no clue about any of these players. And I’m accurate. If the music doesn’t apply to the listener…they aren’t listening to them. It’s that simple. This is why Travis Barker has 100x the reach Dave does. Will his playing be studied and viewed at a level of the masters…NO. So who cares how many people like something because it’s hard to make master drummers mainstream ever. Chambers and so on. It’s just not on the modern young player radar, unless they are searching for greatness…then they’ll find the best players. So the minority for sure.

You're wrong on so many levels.... music doesn't have to evoke family memories. That's way too one dimensional thinking. Btw - Sweet Home Alabama or Alaska or whatever it's called is such a horrible song. I actually feel insulted on my intellect when I'm presented with that kind of crap music. Everytime you hit the play button - I get the feeling of "yeah, this is right...this is my place to live. Depth and quality." And by the way. Good music is never played at a family anything. All my best musical experiences comes from blasting fusion, jazz and blues out in my teenage room by my self. Getting deep into the music - and not getting distracted by anything. What you're talking about is so superficial to me. Music is all about being present in the now - free from other people, society, family, relationships of any kind - and connecting with your own emotions. A LOT of Dave's music does that to me. It has never been about technique or anything like that. It's about what's beyond the physical world. And fusion is almost the only music art form to me that has that adventurous quality. I do agree that Orkin's marketing strategy is way too aggressive. But to be honest. This video just digs you in a hole impossible to get out of. To me. Hope you feel you get something out of putting stuff down that you don't understand. This video is so disrespectful.

I respect Dave Weckl’s high level drumming skills but I honestly can’t imagine him being anyone’s “favorite drummer”. He just comes across as a bit robotic and doesn’t exude much personality or emotion from the drums. Perhaps it is some of the bland fusion music being played that is the true turnoff. I like some fusion like the 70’s Tony Willams “Lifetime” records. That music and Tony’s playing exuded passion and fire.

First of all, I would like to mention that I am a great admirer of Dave Weckl and what he has achieved in terms of musicianship, diversity, production, etc., but also how he manages to continue to play a significant role in this music business. Not to mention his ambassador role for drummers and drumming in general. In addition, he is one of the leading drummers ever and his style and sound are always recognizable. In that sense, my response was obviously written with this in mind. I've watched this video of yours several times and let it sink in before commenting. The reason you made this video - as I understand it - has to do with the incident with your friends and the management (Steve Orkin) on Dave Weckl's side. In itself it's fine to support your friends and help them in this user rights issue. What I have great difficulty with, however, is that you immediately seize this opportunity to express your aversion to fusion music in general. And that's something that doesn't interest me one bit. I really don't care if you like this music or not, or if you're also going to give incredibly lame and pathetic comments on the way the musicians are making their music. I see it this way: at the moment you are sitting there in that hole of yours with no quality at all and in my opinion you have not achieved anything useful that has made the world a little wiser. You have indicated several times that you think the musical ability of the individual musicians is very good, but that you think the fusion music itself is terrible. So many people, so many tastes and yours is irrelevant. In other words, what do you actually want to achieve with this incredibly pathetic and childish video? It is of a sadness that is impossible to imagine.

I agree with almost everything written by @roberthstakenburg2740. I also see the point where people might want to change their perception on.. let's say.. 'who's helping whom' on KZread and the likes.. really agree on that one. But I will tell you that Dave himself said that songs he offers as playalong s CAN be used on KZread, he only asked to tag whoever was the composer so it didn't look like it was him in case it wasn't. Your way of reacting is what it is.. your business really.. But I remember you said ( I'm sure being just angry) how Vinnie accomplished to play with some of the big guys.. ( you may have used different words ). So here I'd like to add that so did Dave. As still quite a young man he toured with Paul Simon, recorded for Robert Plant ( how is that? ). Most importantly, have you given a thought to what makes it happen, that he doesn't need any of the big names to be able to do so very well for decades?? Vinnie on the other hand and according to his own words did that ( and I DON'T blame him ) much for the money.. It was him who said something like "I don't always love all that I play or have to go thru on the tours, but it is good sometimes to 'milk the cow' should you get the call..." BTW this all still with a BIG respect to Vinnie!

I'm probably one of the biggest 'wecklists' out there. I'm aware of the criticisms you made and agree with some of them. Sometimes it's like playing music absolutely perfectly, without playing any music. But in terms of ability he's still one of the greatest ever. You seemed more positive about his soloing and I'd point to that in terms of something of great value. The argument I would make for this sort of music is that we need specialists and educators. The more specialist you get, naturally the more detached you get from the music the average person listens to. But I see nothing wrong with pushing the boundaries. In my experience, the 'feel' crowd is just as, if not more tribal than the 'technique' crowd. It's unnecessary- I mean, I don't usually go home and stick on Perpetual Motion, but it has its merits. I think most of the 'technique' guys know that technique for the sake of it is not music. I would disagree in particular with the characterisation of the elektric band. Chic's music was extremely popular in 1980's New York and was at the centre of the fusion scene. You can see the atmosphere in many of the clips from those performances. I would have loved to have been alive to see it. When I watch Weckl, what I feel is the passion it takes to practice that hard and get that good. And it's a really deep thing in me- it really lights me up- kind of a deep burning motivation in me. Every time I see him, I tell him I love him.

At some point you can say everything is linear. You can keep saying it, won't make it true. Linear is rare. Drumming is complexe. That's not linear. How ? Just how is that the conversation ? Disappointing Edit : scratch that, the video, you keep saying to lay down, grow up, bless your heart. No disappointment. Shit posting.@@JunkdrummerTV

It is always very amusing to see a video from people who are not a big fan of Dave Weckl. I understand everyone who is not a fan of his music, musical taste is something very subjective. However, I have no sympathy for just about every other point in this video. Copyright is being trampled on almost everywhere these days. Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of fair use. But for my understanding it would be appropriate to at least inform the copyright holder about it or to get permission for the use in the context of "fair use". It has long been very difficult to make a living from artistic creation, especially if you are not in the highly commercialized sector of the industry. With the invention of social media and the associated short-lived nature of content and works, the whole thing has become much more difficult. Therefore, I basically understand that artists together with their management try to protect their intellectual property. Not everyone has the deep legal understanding and especially the authority to decide what falls under the term "fair use" and what does not. So it should be in the interest of every artist and therefore also musician to protect his interests as well as his sources of income. The situation will not get better if everyone can use any content at any time simply by claiming it is "fair use". As for the statements regarding the music: The musicians around Dave Weckl are pretty much the spearhead as far as the ability to express themselves on the instrument is concerned. They don't need to reinvent themselves, as they were already incredibly far away from everything and everyone else in the early 80s. The choice of style and genre is also obvious. When you play at that level, there aren't many genres left to use those skills. I would imagine that for many musicians in this league it would feel like being chained if there was no room for improvisation and soloing. And no, a guitar solo in a metal song is not even close to the same thing. The so-called modern music is produced from front to back and there is hardly a human component left. Even the sound of the instruments and voice is usually changed so much that hardly anything authentic remains. So to speak of emotionless music in this video is very presumptuous. If the music doesn't touch you that's absolutely fine, but then please don't say that this music is generally emotionless. When I hear this band play, I hardly hear and see anything but pure emotion. The level of dynamics, contrast, heart and soul in the playing of each individual on stage is permanently visible and above all audible. And finally, one more thing, Dave Weckl has managed to attract people to come and watch him play through his dedication and discipline for music and drumming. They come because of his complexity, dynamics, outstanding timing, vocabulary, and overall expressiveness on the instrument. The music being played is secondary; you always get 100% Dave Weckl. Very few of us can claim to have come this far, so we should definitely not pass judgment on the musical decisions of musicians of this caliber. Simply listen and enjoy - if the groove doesn't ignite, invest more time in music history and the greats who came before us. Try to further develop yourself on the instrument in all directions and music styles. Eventually, the day will come when you truly understand what Dave is doing. Happy drumming everybody!

It is NOT Weckls right to prevent others from using his music if that use falls within the boundaries of the law - "fair use" is not some vague ethical standard but a legal requirement.. the OPs use of material met that requirement. Nuff said. If you really believe the DWB are "the spearhead as far as the ability to express themselves on the instrument is concerned" then you need to listen to more modern music. And what is it they're actually expressing?? Please point out exactly where (timestamp please) and how in the DWB video the "heart & soul" is "permanently visible"? I'll ignore the arrogant condescending nonsense that concludes your post and ask you to consider this - you seem to think the DWB are the worlds best musicians and yet "the music being played is secondary".. so what the hell are they doing exactly? Isn't the fundamental requirement of a musician to actually er.. play music?

Usually these men who loves the metal music, cannot handle the groove. That's why these big bearded men laugh at jazz fusion, cause they cannot even dance with it, cause they cannot hold no groove. Dave on the first Electrik Band was like nothing else. His playing at that age was as with Michelle Camillo was beyond anyone at the time at such a young age becasue where do you go AFTER Steve Gadd? Dave was the next guy. Not better than Steve, not worse, not as innovative but a slight evolution beyond Steve for sure which is asking for the impossible. You new it was Dave when he played. That said there is credibility that the fusion formula continues on and so many songs sound exactly the same. It has become tiresome even for us players but you just cannot not watch such virtuosity. The audience is pretty much musicians and amature musicians that can't really play at this level but close. I have mad respect for Dave, Vinnie and Steve but sorry none of them lay it down like Carter, Aaron Spears or a John Blackwel RIP or hit a drum like Bonham. And they are not fusion guys aside from Carter who I think just might be the best drummer on the planet. Simon Phillips can lay it down and do it all also. So we have guys out there when you get to the point where groove rules technical virtuosity but they all hold their place in the herd of GOATS we are so lucky to have out there.

I can agree with you that Orkin shouldn’t have bothered guys using the Weckl material for teaching. If anything, they called attention to the music, the band, and Dave, which is only going to help Weckl’s business. However, pretty much nothing you’re saying about the music can be taken seriously. You are entitled to your preferences of course, but your preferences are indications of your taste, not of someone else’s quality. If you don’t get the vibe, that doesn’t mean there isn’t one. Also, clearly, many of your comments are not even about artistic criticism; you’re just being mean out of spite, as if that is somehow going to defend your two drum teacher friends-which it’s not. You said you usually try to keep the vibe of your channel positive. I would recommend getting back to that. This does not become you, and does not belong in our drum community.

Thing is, Weckl probably doesn't want to play by these meme "modern day" way of promoting content in the way you see, even if it true. You know how skilled the guy is, probably the best of all time, It's obvious he doesn't care so much about becoming a mega star, he will forever be known as the best drummer of all time regardless, he would outplay pretty much anyone. Probably right about his manager going after small creators, which they shouldn't really. Yeah fusion is not cool to average listeners, it's only cool for the people who can understand the absolute twisted management of time and complexity. Regardless of what some guy thinks sitting in his studio and has never been heard of……Chick Corea chose Weckl to be his drummer. Chick Corea - 24 Grammys and the modern day Mozart. Why would I listen to you? I don’t. I’ll listen to the greats when it comes to who is the best. Not some guy trying to get clicks on KZread

"Vinnie Colaiuta's souless stepson" ouch - hammer meet nail. That is a pretty good description and why I have had a hard time listening to him. Heavy on chops, light on feel. Kind of like Joe Bonamassa.

Guys listen to Vinny and you will know what this dude is talking about! It’s about being a human musician not a human metronome! Vinny is an absolute musician / drummer he plays for you to listen to him he captivates the listener and plays for the music and never is the music himself!

Im a weckl fan and love his songs and revords but then again I come from that demograph and time era. This drummer and his opinions expressed here did nothing to offend me though. His views are humour based and his critiques qualified enough that I couldnt fault him if I tried. His opinions should be freely expressed and his point of views are specific and sincere. I still enjoy weckl bit i cannot fault this drummer and his views herein. Funny, mostly true and obviously not perdonal to anyone here. An invite to discoutse and a break from musical demi god int

LOL, this vid is like "Well someone had to say it" when it comes to Dave Weckl Band's music. I've been a fan of Weckl since he first came on the scene (still have the Modern Drummer issue that has Neil Peart on the cover with Weckl in the Up and Coming article back in the 80's), and there is no doubt of who he is as a drummer. But his band's music is like highly syncopated progressive smooth jazz. To me the only Electrk Band album I can listen to is the one that doesn't have Eric Marienthal in it. I think what this video is saying that DWB's music is the "whitest" jazz fusion out there, it's Dave Koz but with Dave Weckl. It's like if ypu fed Dave Weckl and a sax player into the AI, and this is the result. As far as the other stuff, I've been to a couple of his clinics way back in the day, and he was a very nice, humble and generous guy. He's earned his accolades because he changed a lot of the game back then, to even where his clones wore mullets (and there were a lot of them). Drummers have a lot to thank him for when it comes to his instructional videos and clinics. But yeah, this music, even a fan of Weckl like myself, this music isn't for me. It is highly predictable, played at a very high level, perfectly executed, and ultimately inconsequential. All I am hearing is chops, and not enough music.

So you are calling Chick Corea a smooth jazz artist? He put together the Electrik Band, wion 24 Grammys and is the modern day Mozart. You do realize Chick used both Weckl and Vinnie in the Electrik Band during those “smooth jazz” days.

@@user-nv2gw1tt5o Colauita is not on any of The Eletrick Band albums, the only album he is credited on with Corea is with the Akoustik Band, Live at the Blue Note in Tokyo. So that blows your whole "do you realize" moment while at the same time taking things way out of context when it comes to Chick Corea's body of work which I am very familiar with (especially with Miles Davis). I don't even know why you brought Colauita into this, I mean you could had mentioned Roy Haynes, Joe Chambers, Lenny White, etc. I don't even know how you came conflating Dave Koz to the Electrik Band (because my point there was Dave Weckl's band), but if you're comparing Marienthal to Koz, well, point taken. Maybe that's what you realized yourself. Edit: also, GRP Records put out a lot of "commercial jazz" in the 80's, you could probably find several artists who released records on that label during that time on "smooth jazz" radio stations, like the "Light Years" track, or anything from Dave Grusin, Lee Ritenour, Billy Cobham, and yes, even Eric Marienthal played on those stations.

😂 Glad you dished this out! I graduated from the same high school as Dave and played drums in the school’s jazz band as he did, only 30 years later… man is he a twat… great skills of course, but not even the rest of the members in our jazz band we’re interested listening to him. Its complete bogus that he thinks he is the only one that can teach his style - he/his manager clearly lacks a good sense of objectivity to make it much longer in the industry.
