Drum Mixing Tutorial Ableton Live

Музыка

In this tutorial, we learn how to mix acoustic drums using only Ableton Live devices and effects. Ableton Live comes with extremely formidable tools for mixing drums. The gate plugin helps isolate drums in the close mics. The compressor has a zillion different options for adding attack on transients and bringing the best out of acoustic space. EQ Eight helps tame errant frequencies and cut out unwanted tones. Saturator adds thickness and controls amplitude peaks. And the Glue compressor is the boss sauce for parallel compression. You don't need external plugins for mixing Acoustic drums in Ableton Live. The internal devices are more than suitable for this task.

Literally you are revolutionizing how I am able to mix in Ableton. Most other ppl do all their mixing in ProTools or Logic and say to do the same in your own DAW, but it is not easy to follow along with Ableton and I record live instrumentation with Ableton so I was feeling discouraged; THANK YOU for going through this process in Ableton! I feel actually like I can do this stuff well now with your tutorial! Forever subscribed too; and especially since you mentioned Beck and Radiohead cause I am big on their music and how they record along with the style of music

Hey Anthony, great video, learning a lot! One thing you said about panning OHs- you said once reason to not do it is so you don't pan low energy (i.e. kick). What about this idea if you do want hard panned drums - you pan with a utility on each L/R channel of the OHs and with the same utilities use the bass mono function to mono the low end only. Would that give a good result and solve a part of the problem?

Thanks for the knowledge. I’m a super beginner and I’m wondering Where do you get drum sounds that are this basic so you can put your own mark on them? Thanks very much! One more question (to all of you..) When i do all that steps and it is in my case clear that I always record with the same setting (room, mics, channels, bells): How can I save all this editing, eqs etc. so that I can apply them again and again (with one click) to a new recording and its tracks?!

When you boost the gain at 0:28 seconds for your kick drum, can I do the same for my similar looking waveform, but pushing past about 3 random transient spikes I have? Or would I add a limiter in the chain before moving to the snare to remove random spikes?

Hey brother! Is there a way to edit drum stems with the warp tool but for every stem at the same time? I know you can do this with ProTools, but I have yet to find a way of doing this with Ableton! If you're editing a multi-mic recording, all time adjustments have to be made on every mic at the same time. Is there any particular way to do this?

Thanks for this video, such a helpful reference. :) Quick q- during the snare gating process, you checked to see if the smaller frequency section was a snare roll. Because it wasn't, you didn't need to do anything further. Curious though, what is your recommended process for when it is a small frequency snare roll? Automate the track to remove the gate during that section? Just lower the threshold?

thanks for the tips. sometimes it really helps to hear things talked through and hear other people's thought process. so just curious, did you basically know the type of sound you were going for as it will relate with the rest of the mix, or is this mainly for cleaning and tightening stuff up in the drums, then you will move on from there? you may have mentioned that at some point in the video, but was listening/watching while doing some other things so apologies if it's in there somewhere. thanks again!

It's all good ha I know this video is very long and it would probably benefit my channel greatly if I just stuck to more specific things but sometimes I turn the camera on just go for it. I'd say that yes you're right as I mix this whole tune I will certainly go back an adjust things in these drum effects. In my process I like to figure out the drums first and build everything from there. That's not everyone's process and I certainly don't do that every time but in this tune the drums are driving everything
