How to Mix Drums | Advanced Mixing in Ableton EP1

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Tyr Kohout walks you through a real-life example of mixing down a track for our client RDKZ. He employs a number of advanced techniques, most of which you can replicate with stock plugins in Ableton. This is a 3-part series, next up is bass and pads/vocals.

You can zoom in on a wave form in Ableton, you don't need to hoof the gain up. Just press the [+ - ] symbols or cmd and scroll forward (pull fingers away from each other on touch pad) or highlight selection and press Z.

Some great tips on EQ and taming unwanted resonances, session organization etc. I continue to be amazed at how surgical you can get with plugin EQs (I learned on SSL consoles and rarely used plugins in my professional engineering days). Good tips for pseudo side chaining in Serum too :) From a production standpoint, I would probably start with using sample selection to avoid having to do extreme EQing like this (snare does not work, switch out the snare sample! Maybe what I find extreme is actually pretty standard these days), but from a mix engineer perspective this makes total sense. I definitely tried and applied these techniques and had success. Big up Tyr and Stranjah! Great content as usual.

@@STRANJAH I’ve got some feedback for you guys for this video. 1) It’s moving pretty quick. The “fast forwarding” sequences can come fast without much explanation, i.e. the gate on the snare. There was not explanation on the settings used. I noticed the same thing when processing with Neutron. Folks could say that’s because it’s an advanced tutorial, but I still think there could be more explanatory work done. For example, your explicit mention of what the knobs do in Serum helps people of all skill ranges immensely. 2) Somewhat related, but explaining more on differences between EQs, why you’d use classic EQ vs EQ8, what an SSL emulation means for the average user, etc would be very useful. 3) unwarping everything at the beginning... I’m not sure why that was done. I would imagine that folks are arranging the way they need before deep mixing. Perhaps that’s just my workflow being different or very basic still. 4) that sidechaining through Serum trick was super neat. I would have never thought to have done that. I enjoyed the video, but I definitely hope that Tyr takes some more time in the next video. Big ups y’all.

As always Alan, I learn something new from each and every one of your tutorials. I am 100% going to be changing my mixdown workflow, for sure. However, when expanding the wave forms, instead of counteracting the volume with the channels fader, I will probably use a Utility. That way the channel fader remains untouched until I've finished making everything sound right. I like Tyrs use of Serum to sidechain the Snare to the highs of the percussion. I have, however discovered a plugin that I would like to share that does the same job, but maybe a little better. Duck by Devious Machines. I picked it up for $5 when it was on sale and it's what I use to do all my sidechaining. The reason I think it's better is that you can view the wave form of what you're sidechaining to dial in that "duck", then set it to the sidechain track. It also has a filter. Check it out and let me know what you think.

The technique that he's using around the 15:20 minute mark is what Infected mushroom does on their music too which i find amazing since these guys don't use sidechain compression at all, they have a reaktor free plugin around on their forum called "Kick & Bass solver" which works around midi signals to highpass the mix whenever the kick or whatever you choose is punching, making it sound more natural vs normal side chain compression.

Edit: I have just found a problem in Serum and Serum FX when it comes to automating the volume knob on the effects. It introduces some kind of artefacts in the top end of signals when it's being automated rapidly. So I can't recommend using serum FX at all for sidechaining. Hey man great tutorial however I think that teaching people to sidechain with a filter is bad practice. You are messing with the phase of the rest of your drums in that group. If you right-click the mix knob of the filter in Serum Fx you can change the level of the filter and leave it totally open. You won't hear the swishing sound under the track and it won't be brought out by aggressive compression in the mastering stage. Other than that it's a great video keep it up man your killing it!

I group my tracks into sub categories of each kind, BASS, DRUMS, MELODY, DRAMA, VOCALS, and put Utility, EQ and Ozone 9 Multi Band Imager on Voxengo Span on each group for final mix to carve out space for each. KClip and Pro L2 Limiter on Master and BX XL V2 Multiband Master Limiter as an option if needed.

Tbh these kind of videos are not very useful for someone who wants to learn mixing. Instead of just explaining what you do you should try and explain the theory and reasoning behind every move you make in the mixing process. For example, why one should cut out frequencies, why one should compress stuff a certain way etc. But still appreciate sharing some of the secret sauce.

There isn't a catch-all way to explain concepts like that. I'll often leave resonances in certain elements because taking them out would hurt the tonality. All you're going for in a mix is a balance of all the elements. It's up to you to decide what a "balance" even means. Some engineers use very little compression, some employ limiters on lead vocals. The aim is to give you insight into what I think is appropriate in this mix. Give this project file to 10 other people and you'd have 10 completely different mixes.

@@TyrKohout Agree, mixing is both art and science. But having attended a couple of private mixing courses and getting the "why-s" behind why something is done has been very insightful and helped me more then just looking at someone playing around with the buttons.

Sorry to say, but for me, this was really hard to follow. Far too much going on and all at mach speed. Too many things mentioned, yet fast forwarded when being shown, which really doesn't help much. Tons of plugins mentioned, that many won't have and sure, the techniques can be applied elsewhere, but again, with everything glossed over so quickly, what is there really to gain, from this? We couldn't actually 'see' anything that was happening, instead, the end results were just kind of thrown on us, afterwards. I think this video was too ambitious and trying to accomplish too much, too fast and in too little time. Drums are comprised of many layers, all of which require completely different ways to be treated (as you shown and said yourself). I think this video could have been broken down into many smaller ones, where time could have been spent to better explain things and at a slower pace. Perhaps kick and snare could have a separate video from the tops and then percussion in another, etc. I dunno, just my honest thoughts. I get it, you guys are great at what you do and for you guys, this stuff comes quick and easy, but for the rest of us, we need more time and detail to help digest and learn to apply, appropriately. Not hating, just being honest. I love what you guys are doing and respect it all, so don't take this too harshly. Just a little constructive criticism to help for future videos. I really do think there is a lot to share and be gained here, but not in this form of presentation. ;)
