I've did that. From Bristol, UK to Budapest, Hungary. (1950km) I even boarded the Dover - Calais ferry without a clutch. The car was a 1990 Citroen BX 1.9D. The gearbox has survived,and after fixing the clutch it it was good to. Did 30 km in a city with a 1992 Ford Escort, and on that the gearbox has failed 6 months after.

Without a clutch, it would be undrivable. Even with a clutch it's not much better. It would be the same as starting in 4th gear and never shifting

@@OnlyNotes If you know how to use the clutch really well you can definitely start in 4th gear...but the clutch won't last very long and the engine will probably be like: "dude i'm dying" every time you start.

You should make a 4x4 car by welding steel rods between the front and rear wheels, like old train wheels

@grenade If you do it correctly it's actually better for the gearbox then a normal gear change without rev matching (best is off course to both rev match and use the clutch). And due to the risk of not doing it correctly I would only do it in an old car with means chanching the gearbox is neither expensive or difficult.

The gears change pretty sweetly if you get the revs right. I drove a while like his in my MKII Escort after the cable had snapped. Took me a minute or 2 to work out how to move off without a clutch, but I realised if I put it into 2nd gear with the engine off and then started the car with it in gear I could get the car moving that way.

I had this once. My clutch main cylinder leaked the fluid out and I had just enough clutch release to get going. I quickly realized while shifting that there was a leak and it would only get worse for every time I used the clutch. So I drove home from work using the clutch only one time. I'm lucky I didn't have to stop although on my 20 km route there are only four spots where I might need to stop. It is funny how the rev matching came natural by just the feel of the gear stick. You can easily feel when it wants to shift.

Finally I understand how the synchromesh works!!! Thanks for a great video 👍

I understand a bit dutch because I speak german and english,so useful these germatic languages. Anyway, I love your videos and dutch language :)

I have always wondered of this, as my car, 3th and 1th gear synchromesh are very worn, and do not work, as I always get grinding into 3th gear unless I go 35Kmph exactly, so I cannot change down so easy, and 1th gear I cannot get into gear when I am stopped unless release handbrake and shake the car to roll a little !

he's a dutch but most importantly he drives without a clutch.

Very informative, I knew pretty well how everything works but the visualization kinda reinforced everything I knew. I have had to drive a car without a clutch once before because the clutch cable snapped and it was pretty easy because I only needed to stop 3 times, had a lot of luck with green lights and pretty quiet streets too

I thought I’d never need this, it was entertaining when I first saw it, but just a couple hours ago my clutch stopped working entirely and I suspect a slave cyl or leaking line nearby. Thankfully the trick with using the starter allowed me to get it home, good thing I was pretty good at rev matching already or it would’ve been a pretty loud and crunchy journey lol

Ohhh any mechanic who has to drive a car around to the lift with no clutch-master/slave will tell you it's doable! And that you disabled the clutch safety switch with a paper-clip. :D ps- the language sounds too cool, I wish I knew it (tried to learn in HS, classes only offered were French and Spanish)....but this channel really helps with some terms! As a 13-year Master auto mechanic I would kill to just be your assistant!

For the shifting part, it's right the same thing as shifting with a truck actually. You'll have to drop the RPMs in order not to grind the gears. Takes some practice but it's pretty easy to figure it out

My great grandfather had an old 1940's pickup he used on the farm. He taught me how to repair and drive that thing, a three in the tree manual shifter. Back then, there were no synchro-mesh gears and you needed to know the RPM's top shift at (refered to as "crash boxes'" here in the states). I made that poor old thing whine like a banshee when he first had me drive it. Synchro-mesh gears are a wonderful thing....

I have had two cluches break down on me, living in a city i soon got a hold on how to drive and shift without clutch. The most important is to learn how to match the engines rpm before putting next gear in. Turn off car before stopping at red light and then get in first gear and turn key when green light comes on.

In de meeste race-auto's heb je een sequentiële versnellingsbak (net zoals een motorfiets) en die gebruikt de koppeling helemaal niet tijdens het schakelen, alleen tijdens het wegrijden. Zonder te koppelen opschakelen is eigenlijk erg makkelijk, je kan hem altijd in zijn vrij zetten, en als je de pook tegen de versnelling aan houdt maar niet doorduwt, dan valt ie vanzelf in de versnelling als je het juiste toerental draait (je zet dan een beetje druk op de synchromesh). Met terugschakelen is het wat lastiger, maar dan werkt het ook als je over het synchroon toerental heen gas geeft en hem dan terug laat zakken.

Bekend! Maar dan midden op een druk kruispunt... motor viel uit en wou niet meer starten toen ik net optrok bij groen licht. Stond halverwege t kruispunt en toen zei me motor "zoek het uit" vet druk midden in de spits enzo. Dus in de versnelling gezet en proberen te starten. Toen ben ik langzaam naar de berm gereden/gerold

shifting to neutral without the clutch is easy though, all you had to do is to hold the rpm and it'll slide into neutral without any jolts. I occasionally do it when approaching traffic lights and not in the mood to press the clutch lol

@@dauf69 You should release slowly the throttle as well,it would be even easier and you wont hurt the car at all. That's because of the friction of the car and the air and in the transmission,at low speeds are almost negligible,that's why you cand shift to neutral easy,but at higher speeds it get harder and harder,you shouldn't do it unless you slowly release the gas pedal ;)

i practice this a few times before and it went well :) a few jears later i bought a car where the clutch was broken. the car was cheap so i bought it and drove it home whit no clutch, the previous owner was suprised that i drove the car and did not thow it :) repaired the clutch and i had a nice cheap car as my new daily driver :)

I've experienced that cars are every different when it comes to doing this (the older, the better). The best one was my fathers old Opel Rekord, the gear change was sooo smooth without the clutch. He had some clutch issues and drove quite a while like this before he finally thought "ok, maybe I'll have to repair it". When I was young I had a Plymouth Valiant with a column shift and the mechanism was so worn & crappy that I'd rather driven my father's Opel without a clutch...

Dat is altijd eigenlijk al.. Het wiel met de minste tegendruk draait. Zoek maar is op wat "sper" is of "differential lock"

Try driving and maximum speed using just the starter motor! (I did this to drive a blown Vauxhall Corsa B, took the spark plugs out and managed to get 3rd gear! Could maybe add some extra power to the starter motor?...)

Leuke filmpje! Ooit stond ik midden in Amsterdam voor een stoplicht toen mijn koppelingskabel het begaf. Ben toen op dezelfde manier naar huis gereden. Helaas hebben de meeste moderne auto's een sensor op de koppeling, waardoor je alleen kan starten als de koppeling ingetrapt is en lukt het truukje niet meer. Vroeger was niet alles beter, maar veel techniek wel een stuk eenvoudiger, ook wat reparatie betreft.

Goeie uitleg. Ik had me altijd al gevraagd hoe die tandwielen in elkaar zouden gaan ondanks verschillende toerentallen.

I think for one emergency it's ok,but not forever.Clutch changing it's cheaper than a gearbox. But good experiment. In morocco my land it's usually to use this methode,people has not a lot of money to do everytime something in car garage.

Ik weet dat 2,5 vd 4 werkt in ieder geval van mijn eigen auto haha maar weet vrijwel zeker dat 1 niet gaat werken. Wat mij wel een interessant experiment lijkt is met 2 cilinders en of het dan ook uitmaakt welke 2.

Suggestie voor Nutteloze Experimenten #18: wat is het effect van onstekingstiming op het rijgedrag? Met/zonder vacuumvervroeging, extra graden voor/na top dead center etc. (English) What is the effect of ignition timing on the car's performance? With/without vacuum advance, extra degrees before/after top dead center etc.

Ik zat vandeweek nog naar Cornelis van Autoweek te kijken hoe die uitlegde hoe 'n synchromesh werkt. Heel verhaal dit en dat en zus en zo en eigenlijk was 't niet echt duidelijk. Nu kijk ik 'n kleine tien minuten Milo en nou snap ik 't helemaal. Echt goeienandel jonge, dees kanaal!

Dan krijg je 2 accu's in serie dat wordt dan 12x2=24 volt. Bij een oudere auto zal de startmotor harder draaien bij het starten en alle lampen gaan feller branden. Het zal even gaan maar sommige elektronische onderdelen zullen na een poosje doorbranden. Bij nieuwere auto's zal in de meeste gevallen de boordcomputer doorbranden. Licht aan de kwaliteit van de elektrische onderdelen hoe snel dat gaat. Dus het zal even duren en er kunnen zekeringen doorbranden en alles springt in storing of stopt ermee.

Had to do this often with a car that had a habit of breaking clutch cables after a very short time due to poor internal lubrication when the cable was made, solution, soak cable in a light oil for 24 hrs before installing. Having spent many years driving vehicles with 'crash' boxes this is no problem with a syncro. box for myself.

Drove like this, without a working clutch pedal, for a couple of weeks when I had a shitty VW Golf, when its automatic cable tensioner decided to go on vacation. Took some time to get the spare parts, and I still needed to get to work etc... (Eventually I got tired of waiting for parts that never arrived and stacked a bunch of nuts and washers around the cable instead, until the tension was somewhat back to normal.)

Im using clutch only when i start the car on 1st gear. I use my gearbox for 3years and nothing happened with it.

Only thing is that on a synchronized transmission car such as this, shifting like this will wear out the synchronizers. If the transmission is non synchronized, it will do little to no damage if shifted correctly. This practice is used a lot in trucks and heavy equipment and clutch is only used to start and stop.

That's basically like driving in 5th gear without using the clutch, and it will be very hard to get the car going. The only way to get it going would be to push it with another car.

Our semi's like clutchless shifting, i hate double clutching. The big Allison transmissions will even let you shift through HI-LOW LOW-HI smooth as butter with no clutch.

Schakelen zonder koppeling in te houden lijkt me slecht voor de motor. Ook in zijn 1 starten. Ik zou het niet zelf proberen😉

Bij een werkbus is eens de koppeling uitgevallen we stonden midden op de weg heb de bus op de startmotor aan de kant moeten zetten. Kan best en starten gaat ook maar gezond is anders.

Vroeger kon da gwn met vrachtwage was alleen toertal wete da je moet schakele krake was toen ni zo erg ma nu ist wel slecht krake van versnellingsbak vgm niks met motor dan

Daniël Voorst Van wij hadden hetzelfde een keer met de taxi bus de veren waren eruit gesprongen bij de koppeling toen moesten we ook op startmotor aan de kant

Because they localize the title of there video. In the Netherlands the title is in Dutch.

Drove motorcycles for 15 years, never ever used the clutch to shift (mostly gears up, used it often for shifting down though), never had any mechanical issue with gearbox, clutch or anything transmission related, no matter the bike.
