Driving With Turbo Flutter (compressor surge) Focus ST with True Vacuum Source!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Driving around with a true vacuum source for the BOV (turbosmart 50/50 dualport). I removed the intake box cover so the GoPro could pick up the flutter more clearly.

    This is perfectly fine. You will be fine. Any time you hear alittle flutter giving it throttle also that means your car is building to much boost so the wastegate realize that and releases the air and it give you that fluttery noise. If it's super loud you have a problem if it's faint to the ear your fine.

    I have boomb BOV - it not true vacuum source. I do not have intake cover, just a shield. I hear flutter EXACTLY as yours. Low flutter, high BOV does it's job. My question is, I haven't done the true vacuum "hack" (as I have heard it referred to). Is this something I need to worry about or not? I am seeing so much mixed information.

    Hey man I am looking into getting a dash cover for my 15 ST at some point, what color is yours? There are so many different colors and the sites that are selling them don't seem to have images of all the colors. I like this color here, if you could give me a link or something I'd appreciate it!

    You only get surge at a certain boost level or is it a certain rpm level?

  • @andrewmackey6185

    @andrewmackey6185

    Sorry if I was a bit confusing in the video - technically you get surge under low boost or no boost all the time even if stock. You can take your intake box off to really hear it. Once you put a cold air intake on, it becomes even more noticeable. To get the loudest surge, you quickly build boost with low rpm and let off the gas very fast. If you're really driving the car and get the boost in the 10-15psi+ range you wont get any surge as all the back pressure goes out the BOV.

    If you're getting surge under acceleration/boost it's because your engine isn't flowing enough air to meet the demands of the turbo. You need to either ramp the boost up slower, turn the boost down, or find a way to make your engine flow more air.

  • @larsleeson
    @larsleeson3 жыл бұрын

    So, the flutter is from unused boost, not from your 50/50 valve. It's also not great for your turbo, hence the bov. It's electronic in the ST so it works better. I do agree that it sounds cool , but that is all.

  • @andrewmackey6185

    @andrewmackey6185

    Monitoring the boost pressure with the Cobb Accessport will show you get flutter under no boost, so the flutter is not exclusively caused when you build up boost. The BOV does vent when boost is built up but also some flutter at the same time. When you starting building higher psi there is no flutter. It's debatable if this is bad for the turbo in the long run which is why I always tell people to make sure they research modifications beforehand :)

    Flutter under no load/low boost doesn't harm your turbo at all and is completely normal. open throttle surge is bad, closed throttle surge is not a problem.

    It's going to be fine if it's only getting flutter (aka compressor surge) in THIS type of situation. If it was doing it under full throttle at 20psi and 5000 RPM then you've got a serious issue that needs to be resolved right away.

    Yeah I agree, but the flutter produced by this setup is caused by closed throttle compressor surge, not open throttle. You can hear flutter on Focus STs if you only add an aftermarket intake and remove the filter cover. A stock focus will produce closed throttle compressor surge under very low boost which you cannot hear unless you remove the intake box and add an aftermarket intake. With all that being said, I'm getting more flutter than what is normal (probably not the best in the long run) because I have not loosened the BOV yet. Thanks for the comment!
