Driving The 2022 Honda HPD Civic Si Race Car! (POV Track)

Take a Ride and Drive on Nashville Super Speedway in Honda's new HPD Civic Si FE1 Race Car! At a cost of about $55,000 you can buy this turn key fully caged race car. It utilizes the same 1.5L 4 cylinder turbo engine as the stock Si but has a more aggressive differential, bigger front brakes, and a strengthened 4th gear. Of course the suspension is tuned for the track but overall this car shares a shocking amount with the street car.

It sounds pretty good for a modern turbo Honda engine! A bit too loud and raspy but obviously it's a racing car, so no complex exhausts or anything. I also loved how much fun you were having with the ride-along, like seeing the small child that's in I think every car guy come alive haha.

Man that livery looked amazing. I’d drive that on the street lol. That exhaust note is brutal though. Makes sense why Honda had to engineer that looped muffler for the production car. Props to them for figuring out a way to get a decent noise from the street car. Basically all direct injected turbo 4 cylinders from the past decade sound pretty disappointing, and they just get worse when you install all but the most expensive and over-engineered aftermarket exhaust.

  • @UnrelatedNonsense

I was vicariously driving along with you in 5th gear on the straightaway, you started entering a turn and you/we downshifted into 4th, but the turn magically disappeared and you/we were suddenly on another straightaway in 3rd gear letting the car rip! What the heck happened between 11:00 and 11:05? What happened in that turn?

You don't really need beefy rear brakes in a normal track car really. It's just there to make sure the back end doesn't go all over the place. And damn that demo model looks spot on, very 70-80's color scheme, love it. Thing sounds proper angry too, is that the stock exhaust? Like, are the baffles rattling or did they just bolt an exhaust straight to the floor? And yes, the one thing you have to learn when racing an old fashioned manual is when to just leave it in the taller gear because you'll lose the time you gain and then some by shifting double.

Is the HPD Si crate engine offered from Honda "fortified" or built different. This 11th gen seems to want to blow up easier than the 10th gen. Thats coming from the guys that helped tune that HPD Si racecar. Makes no sense. Hoping to hear from an engineering stand point. Guess only time will tell if they are different internally.

That said, I appreciate that you got rid of the dead time of belting in, etc. Side note, I also appreciate how cautious of a driver you are, even on track. As your literal first lap on the track, you're nowhere near the limit, just finding the line. Sucks that you only got a couple of laps.

I used to drive on the old Texas World Speedway (its now a subdivision sadly). It had a high bank and an infield for HPDEs. That transition from high bank to infield was quite rough and you were hauling ass. The vettes and vipers would be at 155-160. I didn't have the nerve in my stock 350Z. I would stop giving it throttle at about 130. We would say you weren't going fast enough if a little poop didn't come out after the transition.

It actually takes a lot more to have a car that will take the abuse on a race track and not start to fail after a few laps. Watch Savagegeese's video "Performance Car Myths" for context. Most of the legendary street performance cars you know would not fare well after 3 hot laps on a race track; they are simply not race cars. I am confident a lot more has been done to this SI than they mentioned, including the materials used for the control arms and other components, the bolts, the cooling system changes, etc.

oh wow. honda went really cheap with the new interior of the si. yo can almost see exposed metal and unpainted surfaces. the door cards/panel looks like it could use like a soft touch material.

Legit bargain for a race car. Even spec Miata's are 60+. GT4 CS is 175k so for a fully caged and ready to race car from the factory this is as cheap as they come.
