Driving my NON TESLA ELECTRIC CAR from LONDON to HARROGATE using ONLY the TESLA Supercharger NETWORK
I take my Porsche Taycan EV from Nottingham to London then back up to Harrogate using ONLY Tesla Superchargers to see what it's like to charge a non Tesla Electric Car on the Tesla Supercharger network. Is it cheaper? Is it faster than the normal charging Infrastructure? Plus I speak to Tesla owners to see what they think of non Tesla Drivers charging on their network.

To get grants in new locations it has to be for all brands. Also V4 chargers accepted contactless card payments. The older ones need the app.
Your Taycan charging on Tesla chargers will be limited to 50 kW only. Other vehicles can reach 250 kW. The reason for this is particular to the Taycan and other vehicles that were designed to be 800 V the Tesla chargers were designed for Tesla cars which operate around 400 V so in order to charge your Taycan with the voltage difference it has to use DC DC converter located on your vehicle which is limited to 50 kW, you could’ve paid extra to have the option of 150 kW DCC converter but I doubt your car has that option as is expensive and previously not necessary since Tesla network was closed to other vehicles.

Of course when I bought my car there were very few open superchargers so it's not something that would have crossed my mind at the time, let along been a deal-breaker. Here’s some questions too for your friend to answer… I am thinking of swapping my ev for an ICE car …. 1. I have heard that petrol cars cannot refuel at home while you sleep? How often do you have to refill elsewhere? Will there be a solution for refuelling at home? 2. Which parts will I need to service and how often? The car salesman mentioned oil in the engine and timing belts that need replacing and a box with gears in it. What is this? How much will this service oil change cost and how often - and what happens to the old oil. Also, apparently these petrol type cars generally stop on the brakes alone - so the brakes wear out much faster - how long will they last compared to my current car which lasts over 100k miles? 3. Do I get fuel back when I slow down or drive downhill? 4. The car I test drove seemed to have a delay from the time I pressed the accelerator pedal until it began to accelerate. Is that normal in petrol cars? 5. We currently pay about 1.2p per mile to drive our electric car. I have heard that petrol can cost up to 8 times as much. Is this true? 6. Is it true that petrol is flammable? 7. I understand that the main ingredient in petrol is oil. Is it true that the extraction and refining of oil causes environmental problems as well as conflicts and major wars that over the last 100 years have cost millions of lives? Is there a solution? 8. I have also been told that you have to transport oil all over the world to turn into petrol or diesel, and these ships have in the past damaged the environment by leaking the oil. 9. I have heard that cars with internal combustion engines are being banned to enter more and more cities around the world, as it is claimed that they tend to harm the environment and health of their citizens? Is that true? 10. I have been told that these internal combustion engines make a noise when you start them - so early starts can wake people up, and driving a lot of internal combustion engine cars in towns makes towns noisy. 11. is it true people can steal the fuel from your tank? 12. what is the drop in range in cold weather, I've been told a car that does 45mpg can drop to 37 mpg in winter - just curious on that one. 13. a friend told me that the exhausts wear out - is that true, and people steal them for the rare material used in them. 14. I was also told - that the exhaust gas isn’t good for you - and if you leave the car running in a confined space - like a garage - you will die - surely that isn’t true is it? 15. next door told me - these petrol cars - carry around 40 to 60 litres of highly flammable liquid which is pumped into a steel cylinder, and its then exploded to generate expanding gas to move a piston, and turn linear motion into rotary motion. Why would anyone want thousands of explosions happening within a few feet of where your sitting. 16. a guy at work told me - he has a petrol car, and it leaks oil. When he parks it - surely that’s not right is it - leaving dirty marks on the floor and contaminating the environment so directly. How long before this happens if I change. 17. my dad told me - if you buy a diesel car - the hand pump smells very bad, and you have to wear special gloves to stop your hand smelling, and if you spill it on your clothes it terrible. 18. is it true - the petrol and diesel is so dangerous, that you can only buy the fuel at a special filling station, and not anywhere (hotels/Car parks/Home/Work)? 19. while technology is advancing, will I ever be able to refuel my internal combustion car for free using only the sun? 20. would I be better off going straight to horse and cart, and not buying a horseless carriage - they sound pretty awful, burning dinosaur juice and polluting the environment whist funding conflict and war and consuming raw material at an unbelievably high rate.

Regarding the Hospital story. It is full of misinformation because the relative number of cars that burn is irrelevant. What matters here is the intensity and duration of an EV fire and the ability of the car park fire system's ability to deal with it. Interesting point about the self driving cars reading road signs on a T Shirts and stopping. I had a Golf (non EV but about to get a hybrid). The adaptive cruise control in that car would read road signs and adjust the limiter to the speed shown, so for example where the speed limit dropped to 50 or 40 on the M25 it would reduce from 70 to the new limit. Quite often though I would be steady at 50 and go past a lorry with a '100' sticker on the back in a red circle, and my vehicle would see this and start accelerating again. Too clever by half and don't get me started on the collision avoidance or lane assist which will either hit the brakes when there is no risk of collision, or try to steer you into the back of a stationary vehicle that you are about to overtake!
ICE cars may catch fire more often but most people carry a fire extinguisher, if your EV catches fire the only thing you need is a pair of running shoes!
I will never own an EV, why?...among the obvious multiple reasons, I have no smart-phone, don't want one, don't need one...& I have noticed among my family just how it changes ones personality. No, a smart-phone is NOT just a "handheld computer", it is a totally different thing.

She didn't even go into the car park under the barrier but they used the two photo's to make out they had a case for entering and leaving and a £100 fine. They are a total shower of you know what. Also people shopping in our local B & M Bargains and Home Bargains (I'm sure shops a Porsche owner like yourself aren't familiar with) have gotten fines for overstaying by moments. We are being watched and controlled far too much but I do fear it's all the thin edge of the wedge!

Speaking as a Tesla owner, i'm actually OK with the network getting opened. By opening it up, Tesla get more money coming in and they qualify for a lot of public subsidy with which they can build more sites. So as long as they keep building chargers at a good rate then it's ok. At least I haven't yet rolled into a charging location to find it full, even though there are often a lot of non-teslas there. I just wish they put the chargers in better locations.

The car I have now, I drove an extra 86 mile round trip coz he moved dealerships (thanks to covid closing my nearest) coz I wanted to deal with him, I know I'd get a good deal and wouldn't have to do the whole dance with someone new, I mean I did go to another dealership closer on the way to visiting my nan just for the fun of it, they wanted £65 extra a month than I'm paying, I said no chance knowing I was likely to pay lower and told the lad to go speak to his finance manager coz I full well know that wasn't the best deal. I left and said if you wanna do business email me with a real offer, they never did get back to me, if they had of, I would've considered it with it being much nearer, but their lose there.

The super charger is working very well..Meaning that the design team, engineering, and most of the office staff are superfluous. That is my take...
Artificially induced congestion… In the 1990’s Reading town council was narrowing the roads and making them one way in the city centre and then putting bus stops at the pinch point. So that traffic behind the busses would be forced to stop and wait stuck behind while the passengers get on and off. This was done to deliberately discourage private cars from entering into the city centre and force people to use the new park and ride.

ISO 15118 is the standard that defines plug and charge. The problem is that most car manufacturers don't GAF, charging is someone else's problem. Most charging networks don't GAF, they don't make cars. There are a few where this works but few cars on very limited networks at present.

With a Tesla if they wanted they could get a photo of him in the car, his surroundings, with ease, and he wouldnt even know it. Just my opinion. Great vid 👌
The U.S. government will pay Tesla to open its charger network to non-Tesla electric vehicles, and the spending will be spread among other automakers, retail chains, land developers, and others who qualify for public charger subsidies. Tesla's share of the $7.5 billion has not been disclosed. 😮

I use the Tesla chargers all the time in my MG4 they are so much cheaper than anything else and sometimes get the membership that gives you an extra 20% of. I've never had any bother from the Tesla drivers but I often challenge them to an arm wrestle while we're waiting for our cars to charge as it saves having to buy a coffee 😊
I^2R, (square of current multipled by resistance) is the enemy of electricity. Then add in Hysteresis in transformers and you have a lot of waste heat when charging. But in addition. In the UK local electricity networks work on average domestic consumption. Some include a bit for storage heating. What this means is local transformers and cables are designed assuming not everyone has their electric kettle, oven and immersion water heater on at the same time. Once we're all charging EVs alternate nights (2 car families every night😂) and running our heat pumps at the same time as boiling a kettle and running a hot bath brown and blackouts are inevitable.
I found it interesting that Quentin Wilson specifically mentioned “Zero Tailpipe Emissions”, which infers that he agrees with you that EV’s do pollute the environment in other ways.

As has been pointed out on various other KZread channels, the news article had various false/incomplete information in it to villainize the hospital and glorify the EV owner, so one has to wonder what the 5 year appointment wait is about. I know the NHS is bad, but it certainly isn't that bad, certainly not when a child is involved. The driver was apparently directed to the main car park, which even has EV charging points in it.
Ah the V4’s - Rumour has it that Musk sacked the whole Supercharger team, as they thought they could defy gravity with those dodgy charger plugs - they put them in upside down and wonder why all the charge guns look like they are dropped on the ground each day by the charger - I visit the one at Trentham every few weeks and always find at least one charge gun on the floor, also look at the state of every gun (6 months in) next time you use a V4! Now, I did wonder why the gun/handle or whatever they are looked like it had been through the mill. That explains it, dropped every time it's been used, probably multiple times.
Ice cars are easier to put out. The water used doesnt have to be collected and treated and ICE car fires dont burn like electric cars do or can spontaniously combust again , days or weeks later and have to be specially processed when scraping- IE stored at least 15 metres from any other vehicle.
Lee, I must explain Polestar and where the brand came from. In the 1990s, Volvo had a performance division like AMG, and its name was Polestar. After Volvo was sold to the Chinese, the decision was made to make Polestar Volvos electric car division. These vehicles are premium vehicles and commanded high price tags. Now I believe their like Acura in terms of price point. Now you know where Polestar came from.
Is Tesla planning on selling it's charger network before they all break down and need replacing, controversial.

Haha! I've just stumbled on your videos and saw the massive loss you've made on your Taycan in a previous video. Sad, but proves the point that 'you should have bought a Tesla'! My black M3LR cost just under £50k new, and we leased it through a salary sacrifice scheme, which cost just over £500/month. The 3 years are up in June. We've done just under 20k miles, which has cost just under £700 for electricity. The lease company paid for a new set of tyres last month, which would have cost about £900, and Tesla came to the house to 'service' the car after 2 years and replaced the pollen filter. Probably cost the lease company another few hundred pounds. We've been offered the car for just over £24k, which we will be buying as it's in excellent condition after taking good care of it over the last 3 years. I'm not sure it's quite as good as the Lancia Delta I drove for 3 years, but it is an amazing car in a very different way. So, mock Tesla and EVs all you like, but the reality is you bought the wrong one, and if you choose wisely, owning an EV is a joy and also makes great financial sense. Just to add some balance.

"I think you'll find you should have got a Tesla". I don't have a Tesla but have zero issues with my Ariya, best car I've ever "not owned" you see yes I fully agree with the leasing thing, with new'ish tech like EVs it makes zero sense to buy one. Lease it people. £500 per month is a lot of money but a lot of fans of this channel would think nothing of paying £100+ a month for a Smartphone. I know there are leasing deals around for £250 per month for a new EV. Factor in the savings on fuel (if you have a driveway and can charge at home) and you get to drive a new car every three years for next to nothing or less than nothing depending on how many miles driven per month. Onwards my friend. 🙂
All i see on the roads is Tesla cars
The electric car burns more violently and far hotter and are also near impossible to put out, as they cannot be smothered as they produce internally all the requirements for combustion. A small fire extinguisher can put out a petrol or diesel but not an EV and when burning they are like flame throwers, so they set fire to the surrounding cars.
Oh my god another monster video.. 1.5x turned on!
i have to say lee that for all it's problems that taycan is a lovely looking car
I would think the poor charging rate is your car itself.

No, it's the 50kW DC DC converter in the car that's throttling it. Porsche offer a 150kW version which costs £294. Porsche forums are all over it, general consensus is "why wouldn't you?!" It seems that Lee is firmly in the camp of "didn't", which means that when using Superchargers, the experience is absolutely tragic. An otherwise 15 minute charge instantly becomes 45 mins! Facelift Taycan introduces a split 400V architecture, thus making the DC to DC converter redundant. No retrofit option for Lee either.

So why didn’t it come as standard on a 120,000 GBP car ? It’s almost as if the EV design and sales teams come from the more stupid end of the factory ,no ?

@@ridbanner1407 The car wasn't £120,000 base price, it was only about £75,000 but he specced it up with about every extra available. (Of course you lose the cost of the extras, and the VAT and so on when you drive off the forecourt, which puts Lee's "depreciation" into some context.) Why didn't he include that converter? Bear in mind he bought the car in October 2021, when as far as I know Tesla chargers were for Tesla cars only, and did anyone anticipate so many of them would be opened up? I guess it just wasn't anybody's priority back then. My MG4 charges at its maximum speed on Tesla chargers. And as the post above says, the new Taycan doesn't have this problem - with the supercharger network opening up, it's gone from an afterthought to a necessity. Poor Lee!
I've lost all respect for quintin Wilson now he's clearly sold his soul to the devil
I think that because Teslas use a 400v system and a Taycan operates at 800v that affects the rate that a Porsche can charge using a Tesla supercharger. I have heard that it can limit the charge rate and take longer to fill due to that. And a Tesla owner has an a/c with a payment card registered. So they just plug in and walk away as the charger talks to the car and recognises it. Only early Teslas have free charging though. They all pay now.
L-Robot remake? Love the added sound!
