My take on it was the play on the “heavy” water, as we all know when someone is a “heavy drinker” that almost always implies that they are a drunk, and the accent words from the D20 are mimicking the slurred speech of a drunk. Like drinking the H2O was speaking normally, but drinking the D2O made him slur… if thats not what he meant with this comment, than he has no idea how genius it really was 😂

Nile is the only person to warn us not to drink something and immediately tell us that it taste good.

As an M. Sc. of chemistry I often worked with it in NMR and we had to do MANY theoretical manual calculations about it during our studies (Thermodynamics, statistical Thermodynamics, Reactionkinetics, Quantummechanics, Spectroscopy). And yes... all those mentioned lectures are part of the physical chemistry part when studying chemistry! 😉 It's less acidic than common water and thus chemical reactions are slowed down. Simplified (!), sweetness results from the presence of 'inert' OH-groups. The more, the sweeter. H2O is way more acidic than let's say methanol, ethanol or really sweet-tasting glycerol or 'sugars'. Those OH-groups get increasingly more stable concerning protolysis. Now OD-groups do not protolyze easily and mostly remain unchanged. That should be the explanation for its sweet taste.😉 And in contrast to almost all other NMR-solvents it's somewhat 'cheap'! 🤣 Additional suggestion for another experiment: Make an ice cube of it and let it sink down in casual water. 😉

piggybacking off of this guy’s comment: what if we make a mixture of H2O and D2O, such that the D2O ice cube would first sink, and as the mixture ratios of H2O:D2O changes for the water mixture (from melting ice), the ice cube starts suspending and then floating in the water?

@@the-fantabulous-g It's far simpler... if you keep the liquid water at 0 C° H2O and D2O-ice will react with each other and a D-exchange will happen. Over time the ice cube of D2O will gradually transform to an ice cube of H2O. There will be an equilibrium sooner or later. Keep in mind: Pure HDO cubes do not exist! But there will be an H2O/HDO/D2O-equilibrium 'reaction front' moving through the ice cube. Over time the ice cube will get lighter and should rise up again. D2O-cubes melt at +3,8 °C... so if the common water around the cube is kept at 0 °C the D2O ice cube will remain for a long time until the reaction has finished. 😉

@@the-fantabulous-g Yes, it is a chemical bond but it is immensely polarized in the H2O resp. D2O molecule. Additionally the binding integral of the HO-bond is not great but not terrible either. The exchange happens spontaneously by diffusion by autoprotolysis. There's a concentration gradient that will level out. 😉 If you mix the same amounts of D2O and H2O you will get a statistical solution of 25 % D2O, 50 % DHO (DHO = HDO) and 25 % H2O. In my proposed experiment you will use a far bigger amount of common H2O so the equilibrium will be shifted far to the H2O-side.

You would have to drink a lot of it for quite a while for it to be dangerous. The reason it can kill someone is too much D20 in your body interferes with cellular processes in addition to disrupting hydrolyses.

I don't think that it's radioactive, but I wouldn't drink it like normal water of course. First of all, that would be quite expensive, and second of all, body can't actually handle it, so drinking large amount of this stuff could potentially cause some serious health issues.

It's safe unless you only drink it. Mice that drank only heavy water die eventually since basically all chemical processes are harder for deuterium then hydrogen which as you can imagine causes problems for being alive. They had to drink a lot of heavy water over a long time though you'd be fine if you tasted it.
