Drinker's Chasers - Willow: Another Garbage Show Cancelled

Ойын-сауық

Willow has been officially cancelled on Disney+ after just one season, quickly followed by Star Trek Discovery. Is this the beginning of the end for terrible woke programming?

Willow - a show where the titular character is worn down and old, and gets drained by using magic (except when he does not), people who kill men, boil their skulls and then wear them are just misunderstood, and the self-centered obnoxious princess is worthy of the magic armour that will only work for the most pure-of-heart and worthy. I, for one, will not miss it.

Drinker seems to be realizing (or perhaps "resigned to" would be more accurate) what I've been saying for some time: People aren't going to pick up the one good series in the middle of a terrible franchise just because the franchise used to be something we enjoyed. We've moved on and have other things to fill our time now.

@GeneralPotatoSalad to be fair, I have been watching Picard Season 3 based on Drinkers and RKs recommendation. However I torrented it so no sub bux for you Paramount. I have to say so far up through episode 5 I've mostly agreed with Drinkers assessment. Thsts the only reason I'm watching it, he and I have very similar tastes, and I grew up with TNG. So far the show has brought back a lot of the cast (Geordie and Data aside), and I've felt like they've leaned into the ages of the characters without being *too* maudlin about it, the new characters for season 3 are good, the one holdover from S2, Raffi, is fairly annoying but she kind of mellows out it seems. I totally get what you mean, 80% of actual Trek fans aren't going to see this due to how arrogant, dismissive, and destructive CBS/Paramount have been with Star Trek and how much they've wrecked thr lore... But Picard S3 is almost in it's own pocket universe back on the original TNG/DS9/VOY timeline and out of the "Kelvin timeline" bullshit, dark anesthetics aside, I agree with Drinker there too, it still looks too grimdark. Anyways, if you can see it without paying money, I'd say it's worth it. I'm torn, I feel like Paramount should get the message *Yes! This *IS* what Trek fans want to watch!... But you probably already knew that didn't you guys, and just didn't care until it cost you too much money*... But they've fucked it up too bad and shouldn't be rewarded by doing thr right thing only when they've exhausted all other options for producing pure shit.

It's hard to make modern fantasy films because of how movies are made nowadays. Besides the WOKE pandering, most modern movies suck because they are just products now. Back in the day fantasy films felt authentic because they were written by people who actually love fantasy, nowadays writers write whatever's trendy. Also CGI is overused. It's hard to buy into live action films with worlds and characters that are clearly computer generated. CGI should be used to enhance practical effects, it shouldn't be there entirely computer generated.

One big problem with the MCU that's worth mentioning is lack of direction. They have teased the Multiverse saga, but it never feels like it's going anywhere and they contradict the rules of the multiverse in every new show. Then you have the Secret Invasion thread. They started that 5 years ago, it never went anywhere but we have a Secret Invasion show coming up. Finally, you have the metaphysical/magic story thread which has been teased with Agatha and Wanda. That hasn't gone anywhere. The writing and planning is an F-

I've been a fan of Star Trek since seeing the original series as a kid in the 70s. I watched every incarnation to the end of Enterprise's untimely death. I haven't watched any Trek since. However, due to nostalgia I gave Picard a chance. I lasted one episode of the first season and walked away. I reluctantly came back to the third season of Picard due to Nerdrotic's advice. I was apprehensive after the first episode (it's hard watching Patrick Stewart play a role he is obviously 10-years too old for). However, I stuck with it and I'm very glad I did. The wave of joy I felt not only being back with these beloved characters, but seeing Star Trek being written and performed almost exactly as I remember it is something I never expected to witness again. If you love Star Trek, watch season 3 of Picard. As of episode 5, you do not have to have seen any of the previous episodes to enjoy this particular series.

While Willow was a fun movie, the thing I love about it the most as an adult was how the movie was built in a way (physically) where it looks like there's always something worth seeing off-camera. Like, there's random settlements/establishments that appear here and there, varying landscapes and the occasional set of ruins. Willow felt like you were only seeing one story in a world full of people, places and history, arranged in ways that are random, but random like they'd be if they were real, and as such, it was the world itself that I wished I could see more of (more Willow and Madmardigan would've been a nice bonus). Yes, by and large it's stock fantasy, but it was somewhat unique in how it rides the line between being fanciful and being gritty; it was a nice place but life was also hard. Oblivion & Skyrim were also very stock fantasy in setting, but I loved exploring the landscapes of those, because those worlds also made me feel like I was in an actual lived-in place. As such, I've always argued that Willow should've gotten a sequel/follow-up in the form of a massive RPG, maybe having Willow and Madmardigan as characters that you can interact with. And now that this horrible show came to exist, I doubly wish that we got the game instead....

In the days before streaming, the studios had to fight against the competition to get content onto the TV networks. The concept and quality threshold had to be higher to get past the commissioning editors, who's jobs were on the line if a show failed and advertising was pulled. Now the studios self publish and revenues are generated by subscription not advertising, who within Disney etc. is going to be critical of a franchise? The studios are getting high on their own supply but the rest of us are looking for a more substantial experience.

Lower Decks is actually really fun overall, Mariner and Boimler are the most annoying characters but they get better as it goes along and the show has lots of jabs at the direction modern Trek has gone while praising the spirit of the older shows, it feels fun much like Strange New Worlds which is on par with Enterprise on terms of quality (so not great but far from terrible) and is at the very least a step in the right direction compared to the bleak miserable choices of Picard and Discovery

They just blissfully continued falling towards it, ignoring fan (actual fans) criticism and feedback. And now their rope (funding) has run out. I remember me and my brother were watching Willow on a scrambled/unlocked pay per view channel in like 1990. And our mom was like “what are u watching” and we went to the movie store and rented it. And the hero was a midget and there was a tough female red head antagonist that watched the man slay the dragon and she thought it was hot because she knew it was something she couldn’t do and we all know that’s how it would be if there really were dragons flying around. And that’s ok and it was still really fun to watch.

I'll still argue that MCU/Disney bought around $300M of Captain Marvel tickets to prop that film up. There's no way that unwatchable mess made $1B organically and they've also refrained from making a sequel despite how much they've tried to prop it up as a win.

The idea that people won't give a Star Trek show a chance because first two seasons kinda sucked is actually hilarious to me, because it has been much of the same case with the TNG. I mean, nostalgia is a thing and people forget those sort of things, but the first two seasons of TNG are really not good. It's only from third onwards that it becomes this show that everyone loves.

  • @Muljinn

The flip side to that argument is that StarTrek TNG showed repeated moments of promise in both the first two seasons, which are, admittedly, generally bad. The current vomitous offerings, by contrast, *don’t* show any promise of better things.

As this lady stated, the biggest mistake Disney has made is making everything interconnected and assuming that everyone will willingly watch everything. It's an all or nothing ultimatum they've given us and many people are taking the "nothing" option and just walking away. I am perfectly ok with stuff like Ms Marvel and She Hulk not being for 40 year old guys like me, BUT don't then make everything essential viewing and say that these NEED to be watched ti enjoy the next Spidey movie. I had never really bothered about the pre Disney+ superhero TV shows, so I'm definitely not going to spend 52 weeks a year watching MCU shows. The whole point of the shared universe in the comics was so characters could make occasional cameos in each other's comics, not so that knowledge of everything is required to enjoy one comic. As for Star Wars, look at how being connected to The Book of Boba Fett damaged the storyline of The Mandalorian. Totally undermined everything that season 2 built to. I hated Man of Steel and avoided all ot the Snyderverse, but at least they had the sense to make an occasional standalone film like Shazam, Joker or The Batman that I could enjoy.
