Imagine what could have been if Picard season 1 hadn't been a Patrick Stewart vanity project, and actually focused on a Picard retired from Starfleet. You know, doing something like travelling around the galaxy embracing his established passion for archaeology, and using that as a backdrop for something larger to occur.

In a better world it would have been a cool dynamic with Picard and Sisko traveling the galaxy together and each learning from the other as they go about solving problems on their adventures with their own preferred methods of resolution.

@@dramaticwords It really is what made Star Trek so beautiful in the first place. I remember when the first NuTrek came out in 2009; everybody I knew loved it and I almost wondered if something was wrong with me because I was the only one saying, "This isn't remotely Star Trek. It's all just action and excitement. Where's the exploration of deep, philosophical quandaries?" Then I find out later that Alex Kurtzman said (roughly), "I saw Star Trek TNG and I didn't like it. It was way too philosophical. Movie goers don't want that, they want excitement." ...and all I could think was, "what a fucking idiot!"

@@Durzo1259 I gave ST2009 a lot of leeway, because the ST movies have never been as good as the TV series. But blowing up Vulcan and Romulus, rewriting Kirk's past... those were unforgivable. Then Into Darkness came out, and it was the worst thing I'd ever seen. The "philosophical" aspects of Star Trek were the best thing about it, what set it apart from all the dystopian space opera. By that statement alone, Kurtzman proved he is the wrong person to be working on Star Trek.

@@dramaticwords It's kind of telling of the modern age, isn't it? Stories are all about feelings and excitement, while deep philosophical introspection is shunned. Kinda like our woke government and education institutions that are now proudly saying, "We teach kids what to think, not how to think." Doesn't matter if S3 tries to be more like ST. It still accepts S1-2 as ST. It still has Picard as an android, Seven of Nine as a mass murdering psychopath, a Federation that built an android slave race, Romulus destroyed, a dark, dystopian, violent, amoral, anarchic universe with no trace of Roddenberry's optimistic vision of the future. Personally I liked S1 and 2 as they are. As far as I can tell consistent to the lore enough to be plausible, definitely consistent enough to themselves and have the deeper moral questions going on - better than 90% of modern sci-fi writing. Yes its darker, but to me that isn't a fatal flaw it is just not very ST. So if what you wanted was more TNG... But then you need to have some darkness before it can be fixed - now hopefully they get the chance to redeem the clearly morally collapsed federation (rather than the federation filled with the Evil Admirals and the like of TNG era that somehow get to positions of real influence without making the federation as broken or worse than it is in Picard S1).

There were some lesser lights like the guy who played Sulu, and Uhura...Its amazing the gravitas that Takei and Nicols brought to the original roles....so some recasting or acting lessons there...but the FEEL of that show...for all its flaws was ALMOST JUST enough to have me suspend my disbelief and think I was seeing ALL NEW REAL TREK!!!

Years ago, before "Disco," they asked Michael Dorn about a "Captain Worf" series and I remember how excited I was at the prospect. I was naive enough to believe a NextGen continuation series would keep the style, spirit, and general aesthetic of the original we all loved. In other words, I pictured it as Next Generation Season 8. Just picking up where we left off, basically, with the same themes of complex moral problems, exploration and hope for the future. I had no idea they were going to turn Trek into a dismal J.J. Abrams movie with third-rate "modern" writing and new characters nobody gives a shit about. I think RMB is being genuine here, but I think he's heavily biased because he cares about these actors in a personal way, having a personal connection with them. So, to me, he is shilling. But not for Paramount or NuTrek, but for the people he cares for. As I wrote in a reply to someone else replying to RMB video to give Picard S3 a chance: These people were loaned the toys we grew to love, and they broke them into itty bitty pieces, spreading their fecal matter all over them. They can try to undo Luke thinking about killing his nephew, they can try to turn back the Timeless Child, and they can try to make me forget about Icheb's severed eye. They can try to clean off and tape back together our once-beloved franchises. But the damage is done, the toys are broken. The Magic is gone.

@@polarissucks I wouldn't go as far to say he doesn't care personally for the actors. In the video he said he spent hours interviewing the cast for the BR bonus materials and getting to know them. I do believe he personally likes them. All his railing I've seen about Picard for the first 2 seasons is directed at the writers and showrunners. I don't know if RMB has said "Stewart, keep whatever personal tragedies/issues you may have in the therapist's office and out of the show!" Correct me if I'm wrong. Yes, I did see Dave's video on confirming he got pre-screeners and he does say it's good (not perfect (of course)). Although I am a supporter of Dave's, I find it dubious if someone given access gives something such high praise as RMB has, and to a lesser extent, Dave. I suppose it's nice to be considered to have a high enough status to be given access, but can you be truly objective then unless you're willing to give your honest candid opinion, possibly burning your bridge to such access? At least one aspect might be in the "not perfect" category is an article spotlighting the crew of the Titan on CBR's site. They seem very diverse and inclusive, and I'm sure they're all stunning and brave. Although the Titan is captained by a white male, the picture they use for him compared to the diversity crew makes him look like a rube and not that intelligent. How much screentime or importance they'll have? I guess we'll find out soon. www.cbr.com/star-trek-picard-uss-titan-a-crew-paramount/ All in all, the direction Paramount is taking Star Trek in is both antithetical in tone and philosophy. Remember in TNG's The Neutral Zone where they revived some people from the 21st century? Riker mentions that it would be great if they could keep them on board, like a visit from the past. But Picard says no, our mission is to go forward (toward the future). Pretty much all ST has been doing lately is revisiting the past. Picard S3 doesn't seem to change that.

Agreed. Point 1: Patrick Stewart should have checked his privilege, not denigrated the CHARACTER of Picard who had led a life of selfless sacrifice to the Federation to the point where his family line was at an end. Point 2: When Frakes said you have to watch it or you won't get anymore, many of us accepted his offer and are just waiting for their failure to wrap up and get passed over to competent hands. I'm going to wait at least another 5 years before coming back because even if they have pulled their heads out now, they've been digging the hole deeper the previous five years - it's only fair. If what he says about this season is true, it probably would have been better as it’s own stand-alone show for one season that had nothing to do with the rest of Picard because right out the gate most ST fans have walked away by now and it would take a miracle to even get them to watch this. After all people aren’t gonna forget that the real Picard died in S1, (Those machine gods should have returned awhile ago by now and wiped out the galaxy) the Borg Queen nonsense in S2 and all the other crap that dumped all over Picard and Starfleet itself every chance it got.

From what I read between the lines, it might be the case that the new management decided to do what the woke have been doing to these franchises for a decade, just ignored everything written before them and played dumb. I'm guessing, but if there is a shred of competence they can write it in with some intelligence and make it clever. I grew up during the original broadcasts, and the imitation shows [ use your own words ] of the more recent years were not Star Trek, so I haven't watched any of it. It appeared obvious there was no commitment to the existing fan base, but a desire to latch on to a new crowd of viewers. But even with that, I really never heard any love the tone of the new shows. For us, we did continue to watch reruns of the original series show. Fascinating that Picard season 3 may be a shift, demonstrating the consequences when you abandon years of successes.

To be fair, listening to RMB sell this to drinker has more detail than what I’ve heard on RMB’s channel. And while hearing that Terry was left to make Picard because everyone else jumped ship on the production front is a tick in Picards favour… the question now is… how much power does Terry have? If he makes Star Trek popular again, can he keep control? Or will Kurtzman come back ala Bob Iger and throw Terry out to locust his way through what Terry brought to 25% different Star Trek? … even if this season is good, Picard is still dead and replaced with an Android who thinks he’s Picard. Terry has to make NuTrek, that has gone out of its way to sabotage what Trek was. And who knows, this might be the finest wine Secret Hideout ever made… made by someone who does enjoy Trek… but made under the company with a history of drowning puppies. We are certainly beyond Teek just being a good season. We are opposed to what Trek became, and the people who drove it to where it is. So Terry has that hill to climb. Making something that even if it is good, means supporting a company we’d rather see gone.

@@michaelgruber5938 Aye. I get what you mean. But TNG was a different kind of show with a different kind of scripting process. They would take scripts from writers who offered them back in those days. Books on the process recount how a writer woudl send in a script and hope it got picked... As a result, the pool of script writers was bigger, and they rarely got to talk to one another. It was the TNG production staff who had to tailor it to spec... Secret Hideout writers on the other hand have been described as a room of writers all working closely together, creating form form story telling and dividing the workload up between them. As a result, the production staff don't have to pay as much attention to the scripts that they expect are already tailored to what the show is... Because the writer pool is smaller and directly employed. As a result, Classic Trek would generate an above average number of continuity problems, but had access to script ideas outside of any echo chamber. NuTrek can... should... by design have significantly less continuity errors, but at the cost of showcasing a diverse set of ideas.

I feel completely "meh" about this. I've seen him shilling this season all over twitter and I'm not interested. They spat in our faces, fed us shit for over a decade, and "now" we should go back and eat it up like good little sheep? Fuck no. Even if it is halfway decent, it's way too little, way too late. Same goes for pretty much all the other franchises out there. I'm a chef, my analogy is, if a chef who hated you and fed you garbage food for a decade, insulted you every time you came into his restaurant, and spat in your food, had the best chef in the world come out and say, "finally, this is it...the best food ever" would you trust him? Of course not. This is why I don't trust RMB.

@@Leathal Healing from a traumatic experience isn’t a linear thing.(Which is actually very Star Trek in of itself) He is able to heal quite a bit when he visits his family. However, as we see in ST:FC, he has buried a lot of trauma subconsciously that he to face again head on. He seems out of character but I would say, that the movie gave him more depth as a character. Showing sides to him that we’re always underneath the surface. Plus, he was basically functioning from a place of PTSD too. If Deanna had been present on the Enterprise to witness his behavior, she might have even had to relieve him of duty due to psychiatric distress.

I read a story I read as a kid called Dragons Wrath where an archeologist in the future has to do a job and she get tangled up in a secret plan. It’s rather good and it’s what I think Picard should have been. Make Picard an archeology or history teacher and the whole season could be one story each episode part of that story. I recommend reading or finding the audio book version (that’s an abridged version but still good) of Dragons Wrath and tell me Picard wouldn’t have fit that

All IPs that we grew up with are under deliberate assault by those who do not under any circumstances give a damn about the work or canon. All they care about is cranking out garbage and shoving THE MESSAGE down our throats, then complain about it when the inevitable backlash occurs. Why the hard shove back? We who sank our hard-earned money, and our love, into shows/books/comics/merch refuse to take this lying down. We invested, literally, in these things which stirred our imagination. My desire to be a writer was first sparked by these comic books. The original creators had a PASSION to put out a good product which they backed up with their names and reputations. Now? Mountains of stinking piles of crap.
