I liked the sub plots of the relationships of the humans. I was moved by that and in awe of Godzilla. It definitely stirred up my emotions.

As a Veteran, I swear, I never thought I would ever cry at a Godzilla movie. I grew up watching the corny, cheesy "MST3K" versions of Goji. But then, one weekend in high school, I went to my local video rental store and just rented them all. Immediate fan. Besides "Shin Godzilla", I now consider this my favorite Goji, simply because of the perfect post-war, veteran and war-survivor focused storytelling. I know that sounds a little biased. It is. But I could truly relate to these characters. --- Noriko: "Everyone that survived the war, deserved to live!" Noriko: "Is your war...finally over?" ----

I saw the movie a few days ago and *wow* 😃 as a long time Godzilla fan this is the best one I've seen in theaters! Toho made him really terrifying and more like a true beast/monster. And the story.. omg 😩 so gooood lol. I had a blast! It's so wholesome to see the Godzilla communiy coming together showing so much love!

Awesome review, Tom. I've been a Godzilla fan since I was a toddler. My parents showed me the 1956 Americanized version of the OG film with Raymond Burr, and I was hooked instantly. After seeing the original 54' film in Japanese, I've always held it as the best in the entire franchise as not only did it firmly establish what Godzilla is, it was a good story which could stand on its own with or without the monster. This is something that no other Godzilla film has ever been able to accomplish for various reasons. Shin came the closest, but failed to fully live up as the metaphors Godzilla stood for were glossed over in seconds on-screen and never shown to have consequences or any sort of emotional, mental, or even worldly effect on the people of Japan, nor the main cast. Godzilla Minus One has now, without question, dethroned 1954 as the best in the franchise in my opinion. It did everything right. With a budget that was actually below $15 million USD ($15 mil was a high-ball estimate, but overshot the real budget which was never revealed), this film did everything one could hope for. It presented an amazing story with well-written and likable characters you care about which can stand on its own with or without the monster. What the monster stood for was universal and, most importantly, HUMAN. Godzilla's Godzilla. No doubts there. But what he stands for is something very human. Not something conceptual like politics (lookin' at you Shin), or nature (lookin' at you Monsterverse's 2014 film). Minus One presents Godzilla as a living embodiment of the horrors of war and human trauma, as well as the sins and atrocities committed by humanity laid bare. That's what Godzilla is supposed to be. And it's what I wish the Monsterverse had been. 2014 was sorta decently close in tone and presentation. But I was hoping it would improve and be more like this. But no. With each film they've gone deeper and deeper into stupid, brainless Hollywood cheese and have been trying to turn Godzilla and Kong into super heroes. And I'm not about it. That's not who or what Godzilla is supposed to be in my opinion. Is it fun? Sometimes, and in short bursts. But there's a reason folks fast-forward through the entire film so they can watch the 15-20 minutes of actual monster action in the Monsterverse films. They don't stand on their own as good stories worth watching for more than just the monster action. And that's not how Godzilla's legacy is going to be preserved or strengthened in the long-term. But Legendary doesn't seem capable of seeing this reality as they keep doubling down on stupid and brainless visual spectacle in place of good storytelling and actually respecting Godzilla's origins and legacy. Here's hoping Minus One does as well with home release as it did in theaters!

Love these thoughts, and yes! It did everything right for me as well. I'll still watch Godzilla Kong The New Empire, but I know it's going to be the American version of "Godzilla The Good Guy saves us all" (and there's a place for that Godzilla too) but this epic Heroic tragedy tale is just the pinnacle of Godzilla's storytelling ability. So good

Yep, Godzilla does not eat people. He kills them, of course, but he is not supposed to have any desires or urges to feed on them. This was one of many traits of his that were presented by Toho representatives in the 'character bible' to the Americans from Legendary/Warner Bros.

Great review on a masterpiece. Because of the excitement from my 4 visits to the cinema in the last couple of months to meet those beloved characters (and one big god of destruction), I've seen, well, 40 to 50 reviews on KZread so far. Almost all praised the film which is amazing itself and very pleasurable, but some were somehow odd, inaccurate or silly, and some even had some over generalisation and typical interpretation of Japanese honour culture structure and portrayal of Japan in the film, at least to the average Japanese eyes like me. Yours is very positive, exciting yet balanced and decent. Thank you, and please make another video on Godzilla -1.0/c, too, hopefully, soon (as it starts from tomorrow in Japan)!

Thanks for the encouragement, there'll be more Godzilla content for sure, as I am posting my review for the second half of Monarch Legacy of Monsters and I'll be seeing Godzilla King Kong The New Empire, which I know will not hold a candle to Minus One. I've just loved the Big Guy since childhood and can't get enough of a well thought out Monster Movie!

Dont you love it when a movie is so good the audience you see it with applaud. My crowd did too. That was the second time I saw it with a bigger crowd. The first time I saw it on opening night there were only 7 other people in the room, and while they didn’t clap, everyone had a look of shock on their faces. And this is right after everyone was sniffling cause they were crying 😂 it was so f-ing good.

My family went to the drive-in theater to see "Godzilla vs. Megalon," too! It would have been 1976 because the American posters showed Godzilla and Megalon standing on top of the World Trade Center, capitalizing on the 1976 "King Kong" poster. [I don't know why, but at my drive-in, the second feature was "Son of Blob" (aka Beware! The Blob!). At 7-years old, that movie scared the crap out of me and my brothers!] I really enjoyed "Godzilla Minus One." Listening to the original Godzilla music blasting through the theater speakers gave me goosebumps!

(GASP!) Son of the Blob!!! That's awesome Scott. I can't recall if we stayed for the double feature or not, I'm sure we didn't, probably too scary for us as well. But 1976 sounds right for me too, I would been 7yrs old, such fond memories.

So, I'm probably that one guy that should have gone to the cinema to watch this movie, on as big a screen as humanly possible. But for what ever reason I just never got around to it. I unashamedly love epic monster movies. I even enjoyed the Mathew Broderick debacle. So seeing the many reviews for -1 is only whetting my apatite to see this in my Q2 in a huge VR cinema. It's best I can do seeing as I missed out on the real world experience. Also looking forward to seeing the -C version also. Great review!

In addition a tip on top of your thoughtful content, The reason why Godzilla's behavior is unnatural and coming back over and over (In the first place, Godzilla's existence exceeds the rules of physics and biology. That's why people are afraid of Godzilla.) Godzilla is TATARIGAMI as mention Takashi Yamazaki in a interview, TATARIGAMI is a spirit (high-dimensional being) that continued to be feared even after it died a violent death as a human. There is also a theory that he is the incarnation of a heroic spirit who died during WW2. (TATARIGAMI is also depicted in Ghibli's Princess Mononoke. The black stain is common in both films.) Although TATARIGAMI is a wild spirit and is feared and shunned, if it is carefully enshrined, it can become a powerful guardian deity. They are the gods that are worshiped. How would you describe the existence between God and living things as follows? The director and CG artists spent more than six months developing Godzilla's walking style. “Is Godzilla Leviathan? “theory Leviathan is a sea creature or monster that appears in the Old Testament, and its name is said to be derived from the Hebrew word meaning "to join" or "to knit together." Chapter 41 of the Book of Job can be summarized as follows. "Leviathan's body is strong and well-built, his heart is as hard as stone, his stomach looks like a row of pottery shards, and his back is lined with dense rows of shield-like scales. His mouth is He has terrifying teeth. When he sneezes, he emits light. His eyes are like the morning sun. Flames come out of his mouth, smoke blows from his nose, and his breath lights coals. He can turn the sea into a pot. He swims through the deep abyss, leaving streaks of light like white hair. No weapon can pierce Leviathan or harm him. There is nothing else on earth that can match him, and he knows no fear. No. No one can fight Leviathan and make it submit, and just looking at it is enough to make you lose your will to fight.'' It is unclear whether Godzilla's settings were directly influenced by Leviathan, but One of the reasons why it is accepted worldwide Isn't that an interesting view?

I love your insights and took a deep dive into some fan theories after reading it. "Godzilla is the biblical Leviathan" is a fun theory to explore. There are so many stories of Serpents and Deep sea monsters coming to fulfill prophecies and end reigns of humankind, These are great plot points and story ideas!

Godzilla's appearance scene this time was wonderful, but if the next film were to extend the overwhelming scene of terror that looms over us as it slowly and deliberately destroys the city to three times the length of the previous film, then I have no doubt that all the fans in the entire world would scream and writhe in ecstasy.

It's a sad world that directors like Roland Emmerich are given mountains of cash and the end results of their film making is pure trash. On the contrary with on only a fragment of that budget, Toho studios was able to make this great film that wins an Oscar for its visual effects.
