Drill Press Spindle and Chuck Disassembly

This video shows how to remove the chuck and spindle assembly from a 1979 Craftsman 15 1/2” floor drill press (113.213710) with 1/2HP motor. I bought this drill press before I knew what to look for, and I got a fair bit of use out of it before my standards rose and the runout became a problem. I was hoping it was a bearing that needed replacement, but it looks like the spindle is out of round. The spindle pulley doesn't look great either. I'm not a machinist so it looks like it’s time to shop for a drill press again...
Let me know if you have any ideas to fix this! I hope this video helps provide some information on the spindle assembly, quill rack, Jacobs 633C keyed chuck, and pinion hub spring de/compression on old Craftsman drill presses.

Thank you. I couldn't sort out how to remove the arbor from my modern benchtop press. It seems that the floor models have a nice MT2 that can be dropped with a wedge taken to the quill but these benchtops appear to lack that feature. Your video was definitely helpful in identifying how exactly the spindle is released and how one might approach removing the arbor.

Awesome, glad if it helps. I didn’t know it was this easy. Also, as followup, I started whacking my chuck with a hammer (nothing to lose) and it’s doing a bit better. Not a permanent solution but I’m not in the mood to buy a replacement yet, haha.

Thanks very much!! Our 70’s craftsman drill press had been getting stiffer and harder to move the handle, and in 20 years never did the spring back thing. You explaining the spring at 1:20 was the crucial help. On ours I just supported the quill with the stoppers and wrestled the handle piece out a ways, wiped off the rust, and put some grease on there. Like new!

I'm replacing the ac motor and variable speed pulleys on an old no-name drill press with a variable speed DC treadmill motor. Just removed the spindle pulley and realized the spindle and pulley mate with a #3 Morse taper. So off to the machine shop I go, new Hillbilly-Engineered pulley in hand, in hopes they can drill a tapered hole. Thanks to this video, I now know how to remove the spindle so we can test the fit as we go. Thanks!

I have same drill press. The way I fixed my JT33 shank is knocking the spring dowel pin out and replacing the JT33 tapper shaft which is .625 (5/8) straight shaft that goes up into spindle. Buy on amazon

Aw men that sucks. I’ve been on the search for a good used drill press with little to no run out and what a struggle that’s been. Suck that you weren’t able to switch that part.

I read below you tried to straighten the taper. Hope you get it close and not have to part out your machine. You could always take the shaft to a local machine shop as it's an easy fix and you get to keep a nice made in USA drill press. If you have a lathe or a press you can get it pretty close to running true. There are videos of straightening bent tapers and shafts using a lathe. I have the grandfather to that machine, a King Seeley Craftsman 100 built in 1956. Yours is a Craftsman by Emerson Gen 4. (1973-1983)

I’ll have to look more into it. It’s been sitting idle for now but I hope that changes soon. I did pick up a lathe for woodworking, though no suitable chucks for this kind if thing yet. I agree I’d much prefer to keep a vintage USA tool in operation if possible. Thanks for your comment.

Likely a prior owner tried to beat it with a hammer to get the chuck off the taper. OR someone tried to mill with the press and took too big of a bite.
