Was WSQ so I spent a lot of time at the pool along with those many who could not swim. Taught swimming lessons before boot camp, this video illustrates why a private drowned soon after I was at MCRD and surprisingly the trend continues to this day. Check out what what one devil dog’s mom said when the Amtrack sunk recently off of California. I think spending one more day with the weaker swimmers with individual training and without the yelling and screaming could help. There is some precedent for this- the DIs tend to drift to the background when the recruits have live ammunition at the rifle range.

  • @marklanz7234

I agree. The childish behavior of the cadre does not help the situation. Remember hearing a story a few years ago. D.I./E-5 was doing his annual swim qual. D.I. needed a minute to catch his breath. One of the pool cadre (E-6) ordered him back in the pool. D.I. drowned. D.I. would still be alive if someone hadn't try to act tough.

Isn't the key to motion, movement? Are there no instructions given to the recruits as to what to do and how to do it before the recruit enters the water? Are there no safeguards in and around the pool for safety measures? Which phase is water training in?

@ Kevin. Interesting theory about motion. I would add the motion needs to be streamlined. That is with minimal friction/resistance thereby achieving efficiency. As far as instructions- yes there are some but I do not remember the instructors getting in the water. From my experience if you do not begin with “bobs” you miss an elementary lesson. “Bobs” are merely jumping up a down getting your face in the water and blowing air underwater. From there you progress to holding on to the wall with your face in the water turning to breathe while blowing bubbles underneath the water. The student learns breath control and looses the fear of being in the water. There were no “bobs” taught in boot camp. I remember the water stuff being near the beginning of third phase in boot camp after the rifle range and the field week. My understanding is that now with this new Pacific pivot the USMC is undergoing, swimming skills are being reemphasized with more open ocean practice.

Being a drill instructor seems like the best, but the worst job in the USMC outside of combat MOS's. You get paid to babysit a bunch of young men and women, most fresh out of high school, and who cannot seem to do anything right. On top of it, you are with them on the hour, every hour that they aren't retired to their bunks for the night. However, you also get to spend your whole day yelling at people, making them do shit that they're going to hate, and you get paid for it.

I'm a 1970's Marine and these guys have a different mindset....IF A RECRUIT is stressed about the idea of drowning, the DI has an obligation as a leader to understand when and where pressure needs to be applied. THIS IS NOT THE PLACE FOR SCREAMING... I rarely criticize the Corps, but this is one time IMA HAVE TO.... leaders should know when, where, how and why....

With the safeguards in and around the pool, what more could a recruit need; much less want? Besides, after the recruit becomes a Marine, the training in water gets more intense. And if the Marine is going the Recon/SOCOM route, even more so. The more the recruit prepares themselves for recruit training, the better.

So question to anyone who actually knows cuz I'm stilled confused to this day. Day one of swim Qual for me I was do the 50 meters with gear swim. Nothing fancy. I was a great swimmer. However, halfway down the pool 6 or 7 D.I.'s threw their boueys at me and said "grab the boeuy, grab the boeuy" freaking out like I was actually in danger and the swim instructors came over and jumped in and started swimming to me. Long story short I grabbed the bouey wondering wth was going on. They pulled me out of the pool and sent me to the Cadre and set me as a Swim Qual 4 (the lowest Qual that means you can barely float and survive) I hit the fleet and became a MCIWS (the highest swim qual) in my 2nd year. (Finally got a school seat) My question is, could I have just ignored those boueys and just kept swimming and completed the exercise? Lol 😆 to this day I think they were just messing with me haha

If there was no period of instruction before getting into the water, that would have been a serious issue of concern. But like the training up to this point, there has to be some type of introduction and example for what is expected. After that, the aptitude and ability of the recruit needs to be demonstrated. This goes along with the training that has led the recruit to the point in their training.

Hence why there are fewer Raiders/SEALs/ODA than there are conventional infantry, and why there are fewer Conventional Marines than soldiers. Army infantrymen go through 13.5 weeks of training between Basic Training/AIT. Marine infantrymen go through 15 weeks of training before hitting their units. Hell, our POGs go through 14 weeks of Recruit/Basic Infantry Skills training before going to their MOS schools. No disrespect to my 11 Bang Bangs out there. Army infantry are capable, but are more specialized (so less flexible) than the Marine Corps, given we're expeditionary in nature.

@@mikehascats26 true indeed 1. I'm pretty sure recruits will no longer get a little pop in the mouth or gut from time to time (making the whole experience a little stressful. ) 2. I doubt anything even close to a blanket party or platoon- initiated motivation would take place (which will also make tings easier) 3. I can't even imagine the distraction on a recruit who is supposed to be focusing on the hardest training of his life but instead is looking at some WM's physique. In 86 I barely wrote home because for me to get through it I had to "shut out the world" and all those distractions. 4. And nothing against WM's because they definitely earn their place in the Corps, but it's hard to imagine a WM DI intimidating me. Part of the experience is that you knew at any moment "This DI could probably kill me up in here". some WMs are tough but I cant see the intimidation factor
