I've never heard of fan lacing, but it's genius and extraordinary.

Very dapper
That day was perfect for showing the point you made earlier in the video about not requiring a hatpin to hold the hat in place. Despite the wind blowing the veil about like a medieval banner on a pike, that hat remained securely on your head.
"I can't see, my boobs are in the way." Things that were relatable in 1830s and are still relatable in 2020s. Good to know some things never change!
Fascinating presentation. The elegant, sporty silhouette of the "amazone" reminds me a lot of Anne Lister's costumes in Gentleman Jack -- you can see how she tried to strike a compromise between men's clothes and the most outdoorsy, practical look available to wealthy ladies.
Greetings to Merlin! And that is one well mannered horse! Mine would do the horse eating dragon dance with the veil alone.
I am a dressage rider and history enthusiast. This was just WONDERFUL. Not only can you create these beautiful historic clothes, you can ride too! :)
The fan lacing was so satisfying to watch. Definitely going to have to try it if I ever get round to making stays
Bernadette Banner said in one of her videos (I think it's one of the recreating-history-as-a-modern-thing ones) that the historical garments looks a bit weird until the hair and the whole silhouette is in place, and this video makes it SO OBVIOUS. Objectively speaking the 1830's hair is a bit.. odd and comical. The undergarments aren't very flattering. The enormous sleeves are.. a look. The carvat over the shirt without the habit jacket just serves to cut off the vertical lines and makes the wearer look more short and squat. But then the jacket and the hat comes on and BOOM! Historical beauty, gorgeous lines, perfectly balanced silhouette! 😍

Oh my gosh, I love the idea of a fan-lace corset. I haven't seen it before! Also, lovely Merlin cameo

So agree👍🏻. Had heard of them but never seen fan-lacing in "action" 👌🏻😍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I had no idea that was a faux backdrop until now!
Fan lacing is so satisfying
It’s amazing to me that petticoats, corsets/stays, and chemises were around for centuries and then in an instant they were gone… and within the last century ladies under garments have changed so rapidly and drastically
That corset actually looks super comfortable

Most are! They're like wearing a big hug, toasty, warm and secure.
Loved that shade of blue. I have no reason to make a habit of any era, no horse to go with it, but this video makes me want one anyways. I just recently received your book The Victorian Dressmaker as a gift and am looking forward to trying some of the patterns.
"Security" is a double-edged sword, because "staying on the saddle more securely" can actually backfire if your horse bolts or stumbles and you are stuck to it ... instead of being thrown off. A few broken bones might be preferable to being crushed under a horse.

and that's where the safety stirrups and skirts come into the play later on.
That wind was certainly a good test of your hat's security. It didn't move 😁
Looks so cozy. I love the flow of the rich blue fabric, and how the collar supports the neck.
Always love Merlin's cameos!
Thank you so much for the heads up on that book! I just purchased 2 horses already trained to side saddle and am starting on my habit. Can’t wait.
I immediately clicked 😂

Hello Karen. How are you doing?
Wow, I have never been aware of fan lace stays. Love them, and they make so much (progressive for the time) sense. Thanks for the info and the overall video. Super informative!
the fan laced stays are brilliant. :)
Yay Merlin! And wow, that fan lacing is brilliant!
Totally in love with Merlin, oh and the dress too
I will love to wear that as casual wear just that and all the layers
"And also you can use it (the cravat) as a tourniquet in case something...happens" 🤣
Never been this early before, I love these so much, these gowns r gorgeous
I'm looking up the lacing. I'm loving the idea of the simple yet very pretty way it can be done on one's own. I really enjoy all of your videos. Thank you so much for sharing with us. You're a great teacher!
I've ridden my whole life and it's only now that I have a desire to ride aside!!!! I want a fancy costume!!
Always a pleasure to see your videos and Merlin
Need a long green veil now! Beautiful! ❤
A windy day! At least it shows the billowing folds of wool to advantage 😉
I find myself contorting my body trying to help you get into the corset! 🤦🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️ I get very involved 😂😂😂

Oh, I've thought about that alright. lol
I have not seen the busk ties in action yet, only stills. That is so neat how that works.
Watching you put on all those layers always reminds me of how my favorite periods of fashion history/ dressing styles are the less complicated ones lol ( Saxon, early Medieval, very early 1800's...)
.. until the Ladys been dressed for riding it starts raining.. 😂.. love your videos.. 🥰
So beautiful! I've always been fascinated by historical clothing, and your channel is exactly what I've been looking for!
I see in the comments lots people are very much interested in this and asking many questions hahaha. Thanks for educating us!!
I've never tried fan lacing, although have seen it in pictures. How interesting!
You look absolutely lovely on the horse. Love this video!
Fascinating! I love the detail of the pocket/pull-through for walking convenience! :D
Absolutely beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing
I absolutely love your videos, I have learned a lot about historical clothing.
After seeing the fan lacing , I'm thinking about converting my corset so I can actually put it on by myself. I currently need someone to adjust the laces after I have it on
Your an amazing couple an I so very enjoy anything you do!!! Thanks for the lessons
This riding outfit is just beautiful
Yippee! So happy to see your post

Either that or one with a split busk. Either option makes putting on a corset much faster.
That was awesome! I love this channel amd can't wait for the side saddle video. I ride dressage and getting into endurance, so seeing history on anything to do with horses is loads of fun. (Also, if I tried that riding outfit on my horse, he would send me flying, lol.)

Brava! Brava! Fascinating, informative (all the side bits of facts you share), and beautiful work. I wonder if there were designers in your line of work around in the 19th century who reproduced and were enamored by their predecessors and focused on "reproductions of extant garments" from the 17th century.

I ADORE your videos. Somehow they often coincide with heroines I’m trying to envision. Fun. Thank you!

I love history and period clothing I don't a suit of the period but it would be nice to dress like a gentleman of the early 19th century and I love watching your videos when your dressing in the period you have a spark of joy and passion when your doing your shows and the fun this is why I watch your show you have a good personality as well your Husband too
This is so gorgeous!
I usually put my skirts on like trousers, yes a couple layers of skirt at a time, I find it easiest to start with the most outer layer working towards the most inner layer of skirt with the exception of any leggings or something like it
It’s absolutely beautiful, and amazing, as I am terrified of riding horses! Does anyone know what style of shoes those boots are called?
Very beautiful, but I don't know how anyone could be comfortable in all that. Looks like the clothes weigh as much as the horse. You are certainly a good rider. This was a very enjoyable video!🐎 ❤
Caray no se trata de vestirse es todo un conocimiento de la materia en historia de la prenda a utilizar felicidades por sus buenos videos

I adore your videos, and your cat is very, very cute.
OK, so YEAH...i now have added the watching of a cute limey gal get dressed to my list of pastimes. I am finally a completely well-rounded individual! Cheers, from backwoods USA!
Those stays are beautiful! I’m still working up the courage to make my own. I’m short waisted and very hourglass, so those look like cups that might actually support me. What pattern did you use, please? I have not seen my feet while standing since puberty, so I giggled happily at your commentary. Many thanks!

Lovely I Watch you from Brazil,,
Please forgive my ignorance... my last horseback riding experience happened about 60 years ago and ended quite abruptly.... Were side saddles made specifically for the rider? Do horses have to be trained not NOT spook at the fluttering skirts and veils? And lastly - loved meeting your Merlin!
