That day was perfect for showing the point you made earlier in the video about not requiring a hatpin to hold the hat in place. Despite the wind blowing the veil about like a medieval banner on a pike, that hat remained securely on your head.

"I can't see, my boobs are in the way." Things that were relatable in 1830s and are still relatable in 2020s. Good to know some things never change!

Fascinating presentation. The elegant, sporty silhouette of the "amazone" reminds me a lot of Anne Lister's costumes in Gentleman Jack -- you can see how she tried to strike a compromise between men's clothes and the most outdoorsy, practical look available to wealthy ladies.

Greetings to Merlin! And that is one well mannered horse! Mine would do the horse eating dragon dance with the veil alone.

I am a dressage rider and history enthusiast. This was just WONDERFUL. Not only can you create these beautiful historic clothes, you can ride too! :)

The fan lacing was so satisfying to watch. Definitely going to have to try it if I ever get round to making stays

Bernadette Banner said in one of her videos (I think it's one of the recreating-history-as-a-modern-thing ones) that the historical garments looks a bit weird until the hair and the whole silhouette is in place, and this video makes it SO OBVIOUS. Objectively speaking the 1830's hair is a bit.. odd and comical. The undergarments aren't very flattering. The enormous sleeves are.. a look. The carvat over the shirt without the habit jacket just serves to cut off the vertical lines and makes the wearer look more short and squat. But then the jacket and the hat comes on and BOOM! Historical beauty, gorgeous lines, perfectly balanced silhouette! 😍

It’s amazing to me that petticoats, corsets/stays, and chemises were around for centuries and then in an instant they were gone… and within the last century ladies under garments have changed so rapidly and drastically

Most are! They're like wearing a big hug, toasty, warm and secure.

Loved that shade of blue. I have no reason to make a habit of any era, no horse to go with it, but this video makes me want one anyways. I just recently received your book The Victorian Dressmaker as a gift and am looking forward to trying some of the patterns.

"Security" is a double-edged sword, because "staying on the saddle more securely" can actually backfire if your horse bolts or stumbles and you are stuck to it ... instead of being thrown off. A few broken bones might be preferable to being crushed under a horse.

Either that or one with a split busk. Either option makes putting on a corset much faster.

That was awesome! I love this channel amd can't wait for the side saddle video. I ride dressage and getting into endurance, so seeing history on anything to do with horses is loads of fun. (Also, if I tried that riding outfit on my horse, he would send me flying, lol.)

I wonder if there were designers in your line of work around in the 19th century who reproduced and were enamored by their predecessors and focused on "reproductions of extant garments" from the 17th century.

The problem was the accessibility of information. How much information do you think the designers of the 19th century had about the costumes of the previous centuries (compared to us)?

I love history and period clothing I don't a suit of the period but it would be nice to dress like a gentleman of the early 19th century and I love watching your videos when your dressing in the period you have a spark of joy and passion when your doing your shows and the fun this is why I watch your show you have a good personality as well your Husband too

I usually put my skirts on like trousers, yes a couple layers of skirt at a time, I find it easiest to start with the most outer layer working towards the most inner layer of skirt with the exception of any leggings or something like it

In the book by Jill Salen "Corsets" there are patterns of corsets of the 19th century (including the 1830s) and a description of the sewing technology.

Please forgive my ignorance... my last horseback riding experience happened about 60 years ago and ended quite abruptly.... Were side saddles made specifically for the rider? Do horses have to be trained not NOT spook at the fluttering skirts and veils? And lastly - loved meeting your Merlin!

One more question, please. Side saddle looks so uncomfortable, did a lady need to see a chiropractor after riding? It looks like riding would throw out your whole back. Mine aches just watching.

@@ellicooper2323 There was a doc on Richard III which involved training a man with a similar spinal deformity to ride and fight like Richard III was recorded as doing.
