I absolutely love this!! The mid 17th century (I say that but really it's early to mid bout 1630s-1660s) is one of my favorite eras. The 17th century as a whole is very overlooked, I hope you have more in store!!!

Goodness! This gives me even more respect for Celia Fiennes, who rode around England writing a travel journal in the late 17th century (Through England on a Side Saddle). I can't imagine trying to navigate unfamiliar terrain on that kind of saddle! Although she was a bit later than the outfit/saddle in the video, so perhaps things were a bit more secure by then? I'd love to see a typical riding outfit from her time. Lovely video and gorgeous outfit as usual.

absolutely love these videos, thank you for the work you put in to them! as an anthropology student, I love learning how each element of a historical outfit carried a different cultural meaning and significance. It's so fascinating to see just how much we can learn from garments!

The dress is gorgeous. There's so much detail! I know nothing about horses, but it seems to me that the saddle in use was probably only suited for a slow elegant walk - and required a very calm and well-mannered horse! I can't imagine perching up there with any degree of comfort or security!

Thank you for this video. About 10 years ago or so I took a theater costume class and as our final we had to make a historic costume. We could choose any period from between 1100 and 1910. I chose the 1630s. The pattern I used was from the book The Evolution of Fashion and I had to figure out how to enlarge the pattern and then figure out the construction order. There were a couple of pieces that I thought were a corset/stays. But you just showed me that it wasn't stays, it was the inner lacing panel and bodice lining. At the time there was so much that I didn't understand about historic costume then I do now, and I plan to remake the gown. I'll be recording it all for my channel.... as soon as I find the book I used. It's in storage at the moment.

Looking at your gorgeous introductions of historic dressing, sometimes make me regret that I don't work as costume designer anymore. What a fab outfit - but definitely just for ladies with maids at their disposal. I had hurt my shoulder recently and felt for you when you winced. Thank you for explaining different placements for the stomacher. That has always confused me studying painting from that period.The rustling of that silk was delicious. And I had not realized that ladies of that period riding side saddle had no option to anchor the front leg (so to speak). That looks absolutely terrifying to me.

Even when riding a horse ,the ladies wore beautiful gowns, you looked superb.love watching your videos.

I ride Victorian and Edwardian sidesaddles and love them- so much modes exude than astride. This one however/ not so much

The hours to make that gown...and the original was made by hand. Its mind boggling. Thank you for sharing this beautiful dress.

Hahaha yeah.

Charlie almost looks as though he is thinking ''if I go much faster you might fall off, sure you're secure back there''? because that saddle looks uncomfortable to sit on and uncomfortable for the horse because of the way you have to sit on it. When you turn somehow you remind me of my neighbours when they raced sailing dinghys, the way they leaned out when executing a tight turn is reminiscent of the way you appear to be leaning out to one side on the saddle. You're a great horsewoman to even think about trying this, especially with a dicky shoulder. Lovely outfit, and given my daughter likes period clothing AND riding side saddle, it will be a great birthday gift for her. (Even if I always end up doing the needlework).

I'm exhausted just watching you get dressed! And, I sympathize with the shoulder issues. I can't reach back to do my bra right now.

this has put me on a strange quest to decide which my favorite 30's decade is cause 1930's was a miss for me, 1830's was a hard miss, 1730 im not sure exactly but rococo in general just doesnt really hit to begin with, so 1630's has a real chance of winning, the bar is definitely very low

For a riding outfit, it doesn't seem too convenient to ride in, the fabric being slippery, expensive, and bulky. Is the bulk partially for warmth? Also, you had mentioned the bodice being structured but is it structured enough in the bust area for riding without any stays/bodies? Love your videos!

In t supports far better than any riding bra- it is basically a covered stays. More details and information in the book…

This saddle - I agree. Victorian an modern side-saddles are far more comfortable - never a sore back! Especially is you ride in a corset that supieras your working muscles

I always thought saddles such as this required the lady to sit sideways (right hip square to shoulders, left hip square to horse’s hips) and the palfrey be lead by a groom.

Tried that. Almost fell off. A slight angle anchors you a bit better for independent riding. For the kind of riding you describe, look at the saddles with rails that woudl keep you in

Were the petticoat and skirt secured with buttons or hook and eye closures? I thought that at that time they would have been tied. Unless you didn’t go fully historically accurate? Just trying to learn.

Hooks and eyes, perhaps the most common way at the time though all 3 are correct

Beautiful outfit. I agree that saddle doesn’t look very comfortable.

You're a brave woman, actually riding in a big, poofy, slippery silk dress on that contraption. Very calm, well behaved horse, though. I wonder how common it was to go horseback riding for women at that time. Maybe it looks more dangerous than it actually was, but in a time without painkillers, surgery or antibiotics, I wouldn't have wanted to chance falling of a horse, if I didn't have to.

Beautiful! But what keeps the stomacher from sliding out when it’s over the laces? Obviously later in the 18th century, they pinned them in place. The gown is beautiful regardless. And I completely understand the need to “take care of things”. When I was dressing to work at our local renaissance festival, we referred to it as “fluffing the girls” or “arranging the assets”. And being very well endowed, I did a lot of fluffing and arranging.

I wonder how many clothing malfunctions occurred while riding? It looks really grand and posh, but I can't think it would be practical? My horse would use any excuse to play up!

Wasn't the 1630's a time when bodices were very low cut on court gowns, or am I thinking of another time period? Would this have been reflected in riding clothes at all?

Do you know the name of those flat metal broken circle lacing hooks? that you sometimes see on the front of lace up bodices of this piriod.

Such a lovely and nice horse! I may be bold in riding horses, but I'd rather stick to my bareback riding than use that saddle 😬 Doesn't look secure at all! I am curious about later models of side saddles though 🤔

It is not secure at all- but have a look at our 18th century riding habits / amazone dressing up/ I talk and demonstrate more about Victorian saddles- much more secure!

I even found someone nearby who gives introductory lessons (and more) of side saddle horse back riding, with Victorian models. At some point in the future, I would like to take a class 😄

Pardon me but i just kept wondering whether especially this kind of heavy skirt, might hurt in the waist area if worn with a boned/stiffened bodice on top and not a structured unterlayer/stays below that would help redistribute the weight of the skirt? @@amyhoffman5839 Give it a try, if you can find a stables that do it, and you might be surprised. My daughter rode astride for years until she tried side saddle, now she wouldn't choose to ride any other way (unfortunately not many stables cater for it and a friend's horse which she used to ride died not long ago - old age) because she says it's not only comfortable but much safer.

These colours are just beautiful and they look so gorgeous on you. I love the of fashion from before the 'English Civil War' & during the 'Restauration' Their whole aesthetics in fashion. For women as for men. Nothing was too much: they just went for it. Oh boy, big 😍bottom wigs😍 on men💘👌🏻😁. And if I lived near to where you "operate" (live) I would love to be a personal dresser - without any pay. Just helping with the "hoisting"😉😅 & settling fabric layers down. But as you say; "you like to do it your way", and in the end you always get there 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😁

why did they have such poofy sleeved chemise if its already going into a poofy sleeved bodice, All that trapped material would have made me feel really stiffled. But... I love this fashion and it doesn't get shown a lot in movies which is a pity because I like the silhouette and the colours.

Frozen shoulder? A TENS machine can help to bring muscles out of spasm. You can get a battery one at Boots. Use it continuously all day and you should feel your shoulder begin to ease.

We are talking of a time before the Industrial Revolution. All fabrics were hand woven and thread hand spun. There was a lot more expense in clothing, because of the fabric alone, so only people of means would invest in a generous wardrobe.
