Dressed to Kill (Brian De Palma, 1980) Cruising

Фильм және анимация

Masterful museum set-piece from Brian De Palma's classic thriller, "Dressed to Kill". With Angie Dickinson.
The gender-ambigous "Dressed to Kill" was made after Brian De Palma's previous film, an adaptation of Gerard Walker's "Cruising", fell apart when he was unable to secure the rights. "Cruising" eventually went to William Friedkin, and De Palma recycled many of his ideas for this film. Despite the heterosexual context, this scene is obviously modeled off the former screenplay's concept of 'cruising'.

At 4 minutes 10 seconds, she starts to leave the room where she had been sitting with the man. Then she turns around to look for him. Notice the painting on the wall beside her. A female frontal nude. This is not an accident. The painting has been chosen specifically to be in that spot. It connects us subliminally with sexuality whether we consciously notice it or not. The music is perfectly matched to the mood of the scene! And not a word of dialogue between the two of them! Superb.

DRESSED TO OFF-KILTER: The museum sequence in "Dressed to Kill" is one of my very favorite in all of filmdom! Notice that, as Angie Dickinson first sit and stares and later walks around the museum, we see first her face, then the director cuts to what she is seeing as she moves. These are known as point-of-view shots, and they can have the unsettling effect of drawing us into a world we have no control of. That's the thrill - to let yourself go with the tide of the storyteller!

"Pick up turkey!" You sure did! One of the great sequences in all of filmdom! And yes, the killer is on the loose... Vaunted music (when it finally appears) is by Pino Donaggio.

@BetteDavisMimic I'd definitely say more of an homage because De Palma always mentions his undying appreciation for Hitchcock whenever he's interviewed about certain aspects of his movies. But in the end, it doesn't matter since this remains the highpoint in his career.

Masterful piece, my favourite single scene in all movies (and I'm a huge movie buff going back to the silents. Angie Dickinson and Ken Baker are uncannily, incomparably cast. I have the whole movie on an old vhs, but I wish this scene could have included the rest of the taxi sex, because I wanted somebody to see it. I never watch but this first part--the Nancy Allen long section, like the Vera Miles section of 'Psycho', are not interesting in themselves, but they do make the incredible openings (I think this is better than even the Marion Crane Shower Scene though) seem like masterpiece little movies in themselves--and they are.

Even tho this movie pays homage to Hitchcock, it was so way ahead of its time in depicting a trans. Even today it's not discussed in films much and only a handful of films have even depicted a trans in leading role. Incredible when you realize over 40 years have passed since this movie came out and very little has changed.

Ahead? You mean behind, surely? Even at the time it was criticized for being transphobic, and especially today, by depicting a trans character as a psychotic murderer.
