At 52 yrs old Ive found that having multiple dress options is best. -> I’m comfortable in board shorts and barefoot on beach. -> Smart casual for Friday night dinner -> Full suit for Church on Sunday One single “look” that you wear all the time makes you a cartoon character.

The entire reason I became more style conscious was because I felt that a 30 something dad should probably ditch the blue jeans and band t-shirts he had been wearing since his teens in favour of something a little more refined. This is gonna flip my world upside down 😂

Well, I'm 54 and still wear denim and tailored T-shirts. But I also have business wear and business casual. I dumped ath-lesiure thing (including flip flops) as primary wear, which is what all men of any age should do.

Wearing a band t-shirt in the right location,say at a gig,or to a pub (I'm British!) is fine,as I find that it's a talking point,as random people might like the group,and remark on your choice. Nothing wrong with that!

@TheJamesvgnr I'm glad you said that, because I definitely agree. The way I always described band tees (or graphic tees in general, really) is that they serve as a flag for a friend. An icebreaker that can help you find your people. Although in recent years it's become kinda trendy for folks to wear band tees even if they don't listen to the band.

I started watching your videos about 6 or 7 years ago after I got out of the Corps and was in College. I took your advice and bought some nice shoes, a belt, and watch where all the leather matched and a nice pair of chinos to go with them. I applied for a part-time office job(bear in mind, there was ZERO dress code for students) at the university I was in and after I was given a quick tour of the facility by the director, I asked her what days/time she wanted me to come in since the job was listed as temporary part time. I kid you not, she immediately looked me up and down from head to toe and back again and said "Since it appears like we have someone capable, you can come in every day after classes if you want". Just like that I was working and earning double of what I expected from the listing. Thank you Antonio

The one no no is to try to use clothing to look younger. Not even Cary Grant could pull that one off. Also, your age is not a Get Out of Jail card to let yourself go. Just the opposite. The standards get higher because you are supposed to know better. The only thing of value in this area is your experience. Truly dressing your age demonstrates how you let that experience drive your style. You know what works for you since you have been you for quite awhile.

Never be afraid to express how you feel inside, on the outside.

I’m 72. Started watching your vids and went through my wardrobe, donating maybe 30% to Goodwill; I’ll take the write-off. My body is still rather athletic (tall, broadish shoulders, skinny legs), but with some, ah, softness around the middle. I worked in a suit-and-tie environment until I was 66… now down to one suit, several blazers and a few sports jackets. I mostly wear jeans (liked ‘em since the 1960’s), with 4 upscale casual jeans and one “dress” black, one “dress blue,” and one “dress” white pair of upscale jeans. I have dress shirts, mostly oxford button downs, out the ying-yang. Weeding out the square toes and beat-up ones, I still have a bunch of timeless, stylish shoes (black, brown, white). A couple “dress” and “casual” watches. Just had my stylist (barber) to give me a younger hair cut (I have white hair and a Sean Connery, white beard). Learned from you how to put them all together, when to wear a shirt out, tucked in, etc. Since wearing my remaining wardrobe to accentuate the positive, I’ve had unsolicited compliments from women 30ish to mid-70’s. This has been great! I just lost 25 lbs and now I'm swimming in my clothes. I know I need a new wardrobe, but it's been daunting. This helped me see a path forward

I live in a hot country, where almost no one wears tailored suits or even collared shirts. It sucks being the only one who's dressed like that, even though I like it and it makes me feel good.

Interesting video. At 73, living in the woods of East Texas, I tend to be very utility minded. Khaki work pants. Tee shirt (usually void of printed stuff). Roughout work boots. Topped of with a Stetson Marshall hat. Note: professionally, I was always in uniform. Either in the military, or a peace officer. Thus, my work clothing was decided for me. Now, long since retired, I wear what's useful for me. No frills, and nothing fancy or colorful. And as to dressing up for fun? I'd love to wear the old style detective suits from the 40's or 50's, complete with the snap brim fedora. 😎

I like the paisley shirts you show slightly at the 7:20 mark! I have a couple that are favorites of mine. I do like to blend some of the modern trends into my wardrobe , but some I definitely have to pass on(super tight skinny jeans).

I’ve been building my closet in pieces. I got some key pieces from DXL during sales, then I went to thrift stores in/near upper class neighborhoods and found things like high quality shirts and ties for a fraction of the cost. A few things still had retailer tags on! 😃 I’m a vet retooling in grad school to a new field so I’m new to dressing well. I started my internship in August and feel like so much more confident after applying the tips I found on this channel

Videos like this surely make a man think about his various clothing choices and tired old looks. Levis 501's and t-shirts are in my past memories but like you said as we get older our bodies change. Chinos, linen and wool trousers are definetly more appropriate to my current life. Thank you for these videos. Cafe society. I look at you. You look at me. Give them something worthwhile to look at.

Always great to see you videos and get another take on what is and can be within the idea of style. I spend more time on the farm than anywhere else, so fit and function are definitely my primary concerns. Though, as I do more in photography, and hopefully build up a side business doing portraits and headshots, I am going to need attire and a style that fits that new aspect of my life. Your channel gives a great overview on style, and delves deeper into the details without getting too deep in the weeds. Definitely has me looking at things I have never really considered before, and this video in particular shows that style doesn't have to be quite so rigid, nor does it needs to follow the whims of the latest fashion fad. Now I just need to find what works for me.

Nice collage of style dimensions. Esp good to know 6 pack abs will keep me out of trouble. I'm 58, lean and mix it up,but cant quite get there w white cushion soled dress shoes. Any dirt is noticeable after the first wearing. Looking for more all leather grounding shoes. Maybe something on that some time Antonio?

I started watching your videos about a year ago and it has been a great transition. I went from never getting complements on what I was wearing (and often not caring much myself) to regular positive comments and sometimes being mistaken as higher in my company than I am. I started with the "large and in charge" plan, but have lost about 70lbs since then. I have learned to tailor my own cloths as significant weight loss makes professional tailoring a bit expensive and my next project is sewing my own Barrymore-collared shirt. That said, I must complain that you also sent me on the path that lead to a fondness for mild Oud fragrances and Tom Ford and Royal Oud are not so nice to the pocketbook.

A lot of the stuff you say in this video are things I'd been doing even a few years before watching your channel. I started by upgrading T-shirts to polos, then some casual button-down shirts. What I didn't understand, and still took me years to do so, was how they should fit. Been following your videos for years, and they've been great! I don't know why it took me so long to figure out fit, but now that I do, things are much more comfortable!

I’ve been working on practicing dressing better so get a better sense of what combinations I can use and feeling more comfortable in nicer clothing, rather than just going with my go to shorts and t shirt

I bought a few things at thrift stores over the summer. Three of them are sport coats (linen cotton blend, wool and silk and another just in wool). I've been using them abundantly since I got them -- and I think the most expensive cost me 18 CAD. I'm a PhD student in economics, so a sport coat and jeans, chinos or odd trouser combinations stand out just the right amount. I do have three suits, but I tend to use them when taking my wife out in the evening or they might come in handy for business meetings (e.g., when I apply for jobs or attend conferences). I actually find that a sport coat is rarely out of place -- and it really makes you stand out in a good way. A month ago, a guy at Starbucks assumed I was a businessman waiting for a client or an investor and another ask me if the expensive car in the parking lot was mine. It gets people turning their heads, compliments, respect... It's really crazy what even a slightly structured jacket and more casual can do to your appearance.

If I want to change my style when I go to college, how should I pick my clothes...? I've gotten inspiration from MacGyver (the newer one), but I'm not really sure if that would fit my lifestyle... I'd be an engineering student, but that probably doesn't or wouldn't matter

Well, as someone who got used to wearing a necktie since his mid 20's I was always a bit of an outlier. I made that choice consciously back then because working at a human resources office at university I often had to tell people things they didn't like so I'd constantly get asked to see "someone who's not a student" even though I was full time staff. I also grew a "beard" (as well as I could back then). Most of my jobs after that required me to dress in shirt, tie and jacket, so I got used to that. Some years ago though, I went back to being a full time student for a couple of semesters to finish my dissertation and it didn't make sense to wear shirt and tie, but by that point I'd gotten used to wearing a jacket (yes, even in the heat of south Florida). Since 2020, I also started working remotely so once again it doesn't make sense to wear shirt and tie every day. I've pretty much gotten used to wearing a nice polo shirt and somewhat dressy pants when leaving the house, but I do usually still take a light jacket with me unless it's too hot. If I'm just stepping out quickly though, I may just wear jeans and some knit sneakers with the polo shirt instead. I've never felt particularly self conscious about my style, though I have finally started working out again since the last couple of decades (and the lockdowns) have taken a toll on my waistline. I do agree that the quality of the clothes make a difference. I used to be mostly a K-Mart type shopper, and though I'm still a cheapskate, I now tend to look for bargains for better quality items. Strangely, I've recently found really good quality name brand items that fit me shopping around at Goodwill, sometimes even including unused items still with their original tags. You have to take some time to look around in those places but once you know how to spot quality, you'd be surprised at what you'll find. Anyway, thanks for your channel Antonio. Great points made about BP in the Ocean’s films, Cary Grant, and my namesake Robert Redford and using style icons as a guide. My rule of thumb is that if you can watch a movie from 20 or more years ago and the style isn’t dated or you can’t make fun of it for being too much of its time, then that means it’s most likely timeless and you can adopt it into your wardrobe.

I'm trying to build a wardrobe that expresses who I am: Young but classic, formal but not overdressed, rock star vibes but not cocky... So kinda like lether boots, dark jeans, rolled up sleeves, maybe a vest, well trimmed long beard and a faux hawk hairstyle. Thnks for all the inspiration and tips.

My choice of how I would dress all the time (well at least in the cooler months) if I didn't worry about being looked at funny would be victorian. A top hat, waist coat, pocket watch, walking cane, etc. I do old west living history, so I do this at events, but would love to dress this way on a regular basis.

Here is how i would dress. if my wife and society would let me get away with it: For Work - I would have a uniform like Admiral Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, 1st Duke of Bronte the famous British flag officer of the Royal Navy circa 1790. My at home casual - I would dress like George Bailey (Jimmy Stuart) from "It's a Wonderful Life. Complete with fedora.

I must admit, I grew up in the 80’s, and I still love, to this day, the Don Johnson Miami Vice look. The 80’s never die!!!!

You can where whatever you want but if you're not comfortable in it, if it's not you, people can tell right away. If it is you, people don't really care what you have on.

I’m 58 years old and have been walking for exercise for 20 years. I would say was a little stocky before now I’m thin. I do add light resistance such as sit up work and kettle balls. At work it’s very casual but I still wear a button down shirt khakis or dress pants and dress shoes. It’s amazing when people complement my freshly polished shoes.

"Who would you dress up as, if no one would judge you" is funny to me, because I've already worn plenty of character-like outfits. In my life, (despite being judged 😂) I've dressed like: The Dread Pirate Wesley, Qui-Gon Jinn, Johnny Cash, Axl Rose, Carlito Brigante, Vincent Vega, Rambo, Neo, and Bruce Lee. And I'm not talking Halloween costumes. While it's true that most of my more outlandish outfits were worn when I was younger, the truth (about dressing my AGE) is that...if I do them right, and on the right occasion, I can still pull off most of those looks...maybe not the big puffy silk shirt that laces across the chest like Wesley, and I don't wear my hair long, so no more Axl or Qui-Gon, but if you do it right, you can be versatile at any age.

Dressing my best helps me to feel my best!

My biggest revelation is buying clothes that fit my body.I'm between a square body type and trapezoid. I'm 6' and 175lbs. I'm very thankful for this "slim fit", "fitted", and sometimes "modern fit" that many companies offer. Sleeves are too short sometimes but I will cuff the sleeves if I really like the shirt and want it anyway. Same with pants. "Slim" fit pants are my friend. Like you said, cheaper, well fitting clothes look better than expensive ill-fitting clothes. I do stray from your wisdom some though, I really like floral pattern shirts. So I do have lots of patterns. But I rarely wear a sport jacket.

Situation or occasion notwithstanding, I wear what I damn well please. I do not feel bound by convention or confined by my age (I could tell you, but that would spoil the surprise). I still have the mindset and the metabolism to pull off looks like a man a few decades younger than I would sport. The lines have blurred in my closet; nowadays, I reach for pieces that are aligned with my style. Be it for business or in social settings, I present like a guy comfortable in his skin. Getting to that point took some time, but it has been quite the ride.

The part in the video that addresses dressing your body type is an area of style that I’ve struggled with in the past. Thankfully, I’m improving each day.

For me this is a lot of reinforcement of things I have picked up on already. I like the debunking of "style is an age range" as it's really more about dress for the situation. The note about comfort = familiarity should hit with most people - most people might not realize that concept but subconsciouslyit's what they are thinking about. Also could you do some direct comparisons of combinations that work vs don't work. For instance, the outfit at the 10:10 mark looks great. Take that outfit and change some pieces with stuff from your own closet perhaps and point out why this combo works and this one doesn't.

ZZ Top said it best, ‘cause every girl crazy, bout a sharp dressed man. That’s because a sharp dressed man, has the confidence to rock the look. And ladies admire a man with confidence and style.

Who would I dress up as if no one would judge me?? Antonio, I _already_ dress like Indiana Jones (both the adventurer and the dressed-up professor, and I have _been_ doing so since 6th grade), and when I want to be a little more comfy, I wear my Captain Pike uniform from the pilot episode of Star Trek! I began to feel badly for my hecklers, because I realized they didn't have the same support at home that I did to be themselves. Notwithstanding, as Popeye says, "I yam whats I yam and that's all whats I yam," and my classic menswear style has definitely helped me throughout my life thus far.

There is a huge difference between dressing your age and dressing well. A well dressed man will be default eschew most of your advice on what NOT to wear - big logos, slogan tops, things that do not fit, things that are not suitable for the function, streetwear, things that a teenager shops for, things that are cheap and part of fast-fashion, and anything that deserves to be in a museum of modern art!!

Hey Antonio, for me one of the coolest dressed guys ever is Nile Rodgers of the group CHIC. He definitely does not "dress his age", and rightly so. He's 70, and is the current face of Chanel Eyewear. Both he, and his late partner in CHIC, Bernard Edwards are true ambassadors of timeless classy style, with an edge.

I live in Central Wisconsin and I've found that traditional lumberjack/frontier/cowboy is the way to go. Examples: Are you going to wear plaids? Put on a Pendleton or a Carhartt, not a Walmart flannel made for a potato man (Unless you're potato shaped😅) Maybe suspenders instead of a belt. And just taking care of your boots. You don't need to shine the leather, just hit it with some saddle soap. Have a blessed day everyone.
