I am devastated to share the news of the passing of former Dream Theater singer Charlie Dominici. Charlie was the voice of DT on our debut album ‘When Dream And Day Unite’, recorded back in 1988. Beyond being a great singer, he also was an incredibly talented songwriter and well rounded musician on both guitar and keyboards. While we parted ways with him in late 1989, he always remained a friend…fronting the band that played at mine & Marlene’s wedding in 1994, reuniting w DT for WDADU’s 15th anniversary show in 2004, opening for DT in Europe with his solo band in 2007 and coming to see myself & JP on our tour together in 2022. I was texting with him as recently as a few weeks ago when he texted me to congratulate me on my return to DT on the day of the announcement. He was so happy and excited for us all… Charlie’s unexpected passing is a tremendous loss to everyone in the Dream Theater family, and we wish to extend our deepest sympathies to the Dominici family during this immensely difficult time. If you haven’t seen it already, there is a documentary on DT’s 1988/1989 era that I compiled for the ‘When Dream And Day Reunite’ DVD called “I Can Remember When…” that is a great tribute to Charlie and his time in the band: kzread.info/dash/bejne/g4yasJd9aK_gdJc.htmlsi=P6mcpYV6HFmn1FqI

Bro, next time, just put the link to the original message and credit it's owner. Never heard of any Joseph Porta playing anything on Dream Theater. This was obviously written by MP, so just put his name at the end of the message or a link to it. And adding the link to the same video as we're watching now, makes 0 sense, it's already being played. WTF???

@Stream of Consciousness A lot of bass players play fairly lightly and still have a sound that cuts through. All a matter of how the instrument sounds vs. the rest of the mix. I think a lot of bands just assume good sounds happens by itself rather than a deliberate decision on what works with what.

Nothing compares with this era. Mangini and Jordan are out of this world, but good melodies like they produced in the begining they could't do after that. Imagens and Words was water divider. When JR joined, the Dream Theater note count per song went WAY up. lol Moore's "OSI" and "Chroma Key" projects are good indicators of what he contributed to DT, sound-wise. I’m still somewhat sad about JP losing his childhood friend in Kevin Moore. I don’t know these guys except as a fan, but it certainly sounds like it was a painful period both professionally and personally for Kevin to feel the need to cut ties after DT. I know Kevin moved onto other things, I’m not labelling him as ‘that former DT guy’ but it remains significant that he contributed significantly to their early sound, had some killer keys parts and left just as the band was hitting gold.

I've been reading stuff from fans and it really comes down to me that while Kevin played simple lines and isn't a shredder like Jordan, he really had impressive phrasing for leads and the ability to create a scene through the raw atmosphere in his playing.

  • @FelixIsBestGirl

@@legatrix I don't think anyone can say for sure why he left, but it's likely not the result of any one reason, rather the culmination of several: he was growing distant from the band's creative direction, he didn't seem to like the band's growing fame and popularity at the time, and he also wanted the freedom to explore his artistic vision unhindered by a band that was tied to a record label. Also, the song Space-Dye Vest was supposedly inspired by a breakup, which might have had something to do with it.

It is very sad that Charlie passed away suddenly here in November of 2023😭 I'm a drummer and I've been playing since I was 3 years old. I was always into metal, rock, punk, video games music, and jazz. I liked Old Rush and Genesis and Kansas....but I was born in 1984 so progressive rock was still new to me. But in 1996 when I was 12 years old my dad introduced me to Dream Theater....the Awake album. I LOVED IT!!! Mike Portnoy became my biggest inspiration for playing drums next to my own father. The rest is history now. Progressive music has been my favorite ever since and really put prog music on the map for me. I've been a fan of Mike Portnoy and DT ever since. I used to live just 20 mins from MIke Portnoy and have met him tons of times over the years. Charlie helped shape and form the band that I ended up falling in love with in 1996....27 years ago now and counting. Was Charlie the "right" fit for this band? No but I did like his voice. Just like James Lebries voice I love as well but some DT fans say the same thing....was/is his voice the right fit for DT? To me from 1991 to 2000 was the glory years of DT. To me Scenes of a Memory is there best album and always will be. But that's just me and I've always felt that way. I loved every album and every song off of every album from 1991 to 2000. Then Six Degrees came along and I loved Six Degrees but I heard there sound was a little different. Train of thought was great and so was Oct. Systematic Chaos wasn't there best and then Dark Clouds was solid I thought. After that MP left and I haven't seen DT LIVE since because of my love for MP too much. I do like two of the albums from the Mike Mangini era but DT has Changed and gotten older. However I am excited to hear this next album they create and beyond excited and happy to finally be able to go see them LIVE again after 13 years....well 14 as they won't tour most likely till 2024 spring/summer. Dream Theater is and always will be the best band ever put together and the best musicians on the planet. RIP Charlie we will all miss you ❤

In my humble opinion, I really regret that this type of band as much as we love, it seems that part of their destiny is to welcome a member and then to say goodbye..... Dream Theater has achieved such levels of musicality throughout the years that for me, the best era is the one with Portnoy on it.... Mangini is out of this world but I feel that ADTOE (2011) may be the only record which kept DT's essence after Portnoy's sad departure in 2010..... Long live the DT era from 1985 to 2010. My favourite DT album. The first time I've listened to this album I was 16. I didn't understand nothing of this music, NOTHING. But I've spend the whole afternoon hearing the songs from WD&DU. I didn't play bass for a week. I didn't understand that music, but I loved It too much.

Wow !! This is DT gold, never seen this before. Have never been a big fan of WDADU except a few songs that they kept in their live sets later on, but this stuff is eminently far more listenable live than the studio versions. I even think Charlie Dominici does a great job live, would never have thought that before watching this video 😁

I wonder what really happened since Kevin keeps showing this kind of refusal to play even a song with the rest of these guys. Ok I get that he had different point of views as far as musical tastes and directions that the band should've go for in his mind, but, each one of the remaing members always had sweet words for him. Each time I watch When Dream and the Re-united DVD, I always wonder " what prevented him to play with them just for fun?". Derek did that, Charlie did that as well...I guess they really had a serious argument, otherwise I don't know...

From what I've read Kevin was always a bit of a pretentious flake. We may never know what happened but the guys have tried to extend an olive branch and he has always refused.

Moore may well be a bit pissed off, considering the lyrics of "Raise The Knife", that were specifically written about him and his quitting the band, suggests there was more to it than was made public ? Didn't happen when Portnoy left, so am wondering whether he might've instigated the song, toxic little git that he is - him and his equally toxic sidekick Sherinian ? Am surprised the rest of the band were OK to go along with that song at all though. Guess we'll never find out.

@@kevinmcguinness1113 Whatever the deal is, KevMo moved on and never looked back. MP on the other hand could never let DT go no matter how many dozens of projects and side bands he's been in. Raise The Knife was more or less written while looking in a mirror.

@@funkster007 yeah, you could be right, dunno. Must admit, much as I don't like Portnoy, if he hadn't left DT, the side projects would probably not have happened, at least not in the form they did, and that would've been a shame ... Flying Colors, Winery Dogs and especially Sons Of Apollo. SoA live BluRay from Plovdiv is almost THE perfect live concert - the band was on fire, especially Bumblefoot. Was gutted, their european tour got cancelled the week before I was due to go see them in London back in March.

Charlie got a bit of a bad rap, man. For the most part, the fans know he was awesome...but you could tell that this was a bit of a struggle for him. Tenor is a tough range for ANY male singer. Hell, I struggle with anything higher than a G. James was definitely the missing part of the equation here. They absolutely took off once he joined up with them. Massive respect to Charlie for holding it down like a fuckin champ for the first album, though. He’ll *always* be an important part of DT history 🤙

After having just recently heard about Charlie Dominici's passing, I read some about how him and Portnoy kept in touch over the years and how they kept playing together here and there, or Charlie singing in Mike's wedding, or Mike suggesting Charlie when a band needed a singer, and things of the like that showed how they had a lifelong friendship. And I loved the thought of it. RIP Charlie, your voice will ring forever, as it has for the last 30 years of my life. Watching such enjoyable moment just seconds after 37:30, when Portnoy's in the middle of the final roll that will definitely finish the song you know what I mean, but right in the middle of it, who gives a damn, Mike notices Charlie giving him the high 5, and the instant Mike sees him, he grabs both sticks with the left hand and wide smile, bail the roll, give me those five brother hell yeah... and quietly closes the song on a cymbal probably in time after having still played the last roll in his mind. Love you Mike, sorry for the loss.
