All the jokes about John never speaking are getting pretty old yet people keep telling them. He's definitely the most quiet and reserved member of DT but that doesn't mean he's some emotionless drone. There's a ton of personality in his playing and in his performance on stage, he just expresses himself in a much subtler way than the rest of the band does. And honestly, he seems very comfortable in this interview, like alot more than he normally does. I'm really happy that for once he doesn't seem miserable doing interviews like he used to.

I think the bigger reason he gets lost in the mix is his tone kind of sucks these days. It isnt bright enough and sounds way too farty on the low notes to cut through. On its own it sounds...okay. but typically to be heard in a mix your isolated sound needs to be a lot brighter than sounds ideal.

@@frk75 His tone went from AMAZING on FII, to absolute garbage on SFAM. I saw the latter live, Feb of 2000...best show EVER, but worst bass tone ever. JM's tone was so overly processed, it sounded like an electronic mess. Luckily, visual-wise, I managed to get right up to the barrier in front of him for the whole show...he was maybe 15 feet away. Like Jason Newsted watching Cliff Burton live, my jaw was on the floor while watching JM fly effortlessly through the songs. I thought it was cool when I was singing along, and James pointed and smiled at me with a wink. My buddies and I met all of them earlier in the day at a record store meet-n-greet. Portnoy was a little rude, stuffing his face with food, but maybe he was in a pinch to eat, who knows. They were all generally nice, with the nicest being James and Jordan. JM's handshake is STRONG, btw (not surprisingly).

I guess it depends what you're listening on. That's one of the downers of life as a recording musician. You know what it sounds like in the studio and on your personal system when you check a mix before giving the ok, but once it's out there in the world it is subject to the device and environment that people listen on / in. I rarely buy music these days but I did buy A Dramatic Turn of Events on CD. There is a lot of great music on it and great performances. The bass sounds great to me. It growls when it needs to. It's smooth when it needs to be. I saw the band at a place in NJ called The Birch Hill back around 1995. I remember his bass sounding quite strong and punchy there too. I listen now in an older F150 that I got recently and those stereos are always great. Great detail on the whole mix .... so hearing JM's bass is easy. My previous truck, a Sierra had an aftermarket stereo. Not as great as the F150 stereos, but the disc and bass still sounded really good in that. However, when I bought the F150, the previous owner had the bass and treble maxxed out! I thought I was going to need new speakers for sure, .... BUT NOOO! It just needed to be adjusted to some kind of sanity! That's another thing; how people have their audio devices set. I am recording some new instrumental stuff that I hope to have done by winter. I am not really musically active these days, but it's hard to walk away from and getting great bass recordings can be a challenge. I am a guitarist, so while my guitar gear is nice, my bass gear is very small and basic. There are a lot of options to get good bass sounds, but to a lot of us, getting the bass right is one of the biggest mix and mastering challenges. I was really surprised to see Jerry here! He's an old friend who I have not seen since around 1990! Glad to see that he's still out there living the life! This Is The Life he belongs to!!

I had the Cobalt Slinkys on one of my StingRay 5 bassed and loved the meat they gave to the tone. What I didn't love was the (relative) short time they kept their tone. So I switched back to Elixir Nickel, who keep the tone as long as they brake. But on my old 1964's Fender Precision I play EB Cobalt Flats. This is a different ballgame. Beeing flatwound they don't allow sweat and dirt to dampen the high end over time, so they will keep their tone much longer. They are quite brilliant for flats, they add some meat to the tone, have a good tension and feel, and I am on the way to get me another set of them for my MiM Precision 50's Classic. My Vychodil P5 allready has a set on. I like the tone a lot.

Tony Nguyen I didn’t dig them in guitar or bass. The sound is as advertised, but I found they went dead very fast. On a guitar it’s not as big of a deal because strings are often changed frequently but on bass I couldn’t justify the cost-to-life ratio.

Many people complaining and criticize the tone but if you all didn't know the new album pretty much has muddy guitar riffs and basslines. The new Guitar pickups John released are muddy compared to his old illuminators. The album DOT itself was meant to sound distorted.

Insight99999 It’s about how it interacts with the band. Distorted, scooped bass supports heavy guitars and exists nicely with a punchy kick drum. When you’re solo, it’s not the greatest sound but it serves the group. It took me quite a few years to understand that with my guitar sounds. It’s been kind of the “modern metal bass” sound going back to the early 90s. The first place I remember hearing that kind of tone and going “oh wow...that’s different...” was on metallica’s black album

  • @Insight99999

@@manifestgtr Thanks for the feedback. I partially agree because his sound was much cleaner in the early 90s. ("Learning to live "for instance etc) The sound is more like this since he plays Music Man's Bongo. But it's not the instrument itself because when we listen how Dave LaRue uses it also in prog, it's clearly a matter of effects choice. But I agree for the "distorted" sound that fits with the heavier metal parts

I guess that it depends on the song but distortion ... up to a point really brings out bass definition in a mix and what often sounds good in a mix is less impressive isolated. Overall, he and Jerry really seem to know what they are doing.

Low action is a bullshit. Look what action have John Patittuci, Janek Gwizdala, Pino Palladino, Nathan East, Steve Swallow, Carol Kaye, etc.... They can't have low action because thy will get fretbuzz. None of them have one. Most of music needs nice round tone without buzz. Look at double bass players. They must work on instrument to get great tone and intonation. Same with bass guitar. I can't stand listening bass players which are crazy about "low action". For most music low action is when you can play with your amount of attack and articulation without having fretbuzz. Period. Most bass players set it by the feel. I set my basses by feel. I don't know if my action is low, high or whatever. It works for me because I can get wide range of articulation and get great sound without fretbuzz. Don't be too much crazy about that guys. Look at both John's or Mike. They PLAY not think about action or sth like that. They set it and forget it. They focus on music not about so unimportant details.

@@jbaranowski1990 I appreciate your point of view, but you really can't make such comparisons, almost claiming "high action" as the common aspect every successful and famous popular music bassist have in common. action depends of every single bass player's playstyle and tone they look for. fret buzz is a completely other thing that only comes around when a bass' action isn't setup correctly, or when the player develops a bad technique.
