Very sad when he said "there's a lot of stuff holding me down" and he looked at his mom. Must be so many mixed feelings and expectations from each other. I hope the best for all of them.

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Romans 10:13) He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy. (Proverbs 28:13) Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. (Psalms 51:1-4)

Why does the history teacher lay out the warrior idea on these kids who can barely make it to class.. Enough with the ideology. Help them put together a phone bank so they can help each other get to school. Small accomplishments have a way of building. YOu can't be a doctor or get in the military if you don't go to class, and the drop out rate is incredibilty high. Small steps build positive actions. Team building.

He is giving them a connection to their culture, their shared past. In doing so he is helping to form their identity. Many of these kids likely lack a strong sense of self and identity.
