Noticing lumps, bumps or loops forming on your dreadlocks and want to know what they're all about, if they're normal and if they'll even out?

Loops and bumps occur as dreadlocks shrink. Shrinking is most common when using the natural and twist & rip methods but can occur in dreadlocks created via other methods too. Dreadlocks are always shorter than the straight hair you started out with, this is because the hair in dreadlocks doesn't grow straight down, it weaves around inside the dread. As your dreadlocks mature they will get tighter and more compressed causing the dreadlocks to shrink more. This shrinkage rarely happens evenly and that's what causes the lumps and bumps. One side or one part of a dread may tighten more (usually after washing and drying) and so will compress a little more than the other side causing the other looser side to look lumpy.
Overtime these lumps and bumps get slightly less noticeable because the rest of the dreadlock will also shrink up and they'll get squashed from daily activity, but they will always be there. Some people recommend palm rolling for trying to squeeze the dreadlock straighter but I don't believe it makes all that much difference because it's not really so much a lump and more a curve in the dreadlock itself. Again for this same reason crocheting isn't really going to be that useful here and I tend to advise against crocheting anyway for a whole different reason.
Fear not though, because these lumps and bumps only really occur in the initial dreadlocks. This means that as the new hair grows out of your head, the dreadlocks formed from this hair won't have lumps and bumps - because this hair doesn't shrink. So slowly overtime these lumps will grow further and further out, until eventually your dreadlocks are long enough that you can trim off of the lumpy length if you so choose!

    I have some of the worst laptop speakers I've ever heard.. and I can hear myself! But I can appreciate that it might be difficult to hear on a phone in a loud environment, but the same could be said for any video where someone is just sat talking at a normal volume. Glad you enjoy what I do and that I've helped you out! :)

    This video is old, but has helped me today. I'm 3 months into my journey and the loops are insane! My ends were relaxed and the roots were natural, so I expected craziness more so on the straight ends. But I was worried I didn't start them right. This is really a long drawn-out thank you. I'm going to relax and enjoy the process now

    I remember watching this video in 2013 when I was thinking about getting dreadlocks. Back then it was confusing to understand what he was talking about, about four years later here I am with two-year-old dreadlocks going through this exact thing here. And this is awesome advice and I have found that I was able to save some of the dreadlocks that did go through this phase. Usually when my locks were wet and the ones that looped and were shrunk I was able to pull them apart to where they stretched. I do still have some solid dreadlocks that have a zigzag and that are not savable LOL I've come a long way your videos are great

    I always explain it to folks that bumps and loops are a bit like window blinds. XD If you pull up only one side, you have one side that's super tight and the opposite side fans out and looks odd. It's precisely the same thing in dreadlocks. :-)

    It's impossible to say for certain. It depends on your hair type, how longer your hair is and how well you can T&R. The longer the hair and the better you can T&R = the more knots you can get in and therefore the less likely they are to come loose.

I am about to use a bees wax to help hold them tighter. I do want to know what should I do about the super short dreads that are just starting to take root with the new growth?

    You need to watch for that and pull them back apart if they try to lock onto themselves - if you don't want them to do it. Once they've locked up there's not much you can do about it. The new growth won't do it so if you wait for the dreads to get longer you can then just cut the lumpy tip off and it'll never come back.

    I developed lumps on a lot of my dreads towards the root during the first week of getting dreads. I have straight, shiny hair and my dreads are really loose, so I'm wondering how/why I'm developing lumps towards the roots at such an early stage. I hear that lumps don't usually form until 6 months

I FINALLY got them to stay, hopefully, but I have hella loops at the roots is there a specific way to fix them at the roots? or do you think it'd work out better in the long run to just live with them and fix it once the shrinkage has occurred, so as to not have to constantly be fixing them?

    hey brother, great vids! I did twist and rip and admittedly on some of them I just went too fast and I have places where it looks braided...should I worry about that and comb out to where it is twisted and redo them, or will it sort it self out as they mature?? I am not worried about lumps, bumps etc, only whether or not it will still look braided and the strands where there are gaps will dread individually and look more like braided dreads, or as they mature will it still knot up normally and blend where it looks braided?? Thanks in advance for your feedback and hope you have a good one bro!

    I really do not recommend cutting loops off. I had it done on a bunch of my dreads by a professional to satisfy my fiancée so my hair looked "neater" and all it has seemed to do is slow down the maturation of my dreads, cause little hair nubs and poky bits to stick off them which then act like Velcro to every and any fuzz that I come near whether from sweaters, hoodies, blankets, etc. so now my blonde dreads are full of black and rainbow colored fuzz balls...

  • @LazyDreads

    @LazyDreads

    wickedelfaba I wouldn't recommend trying to 'fix' loops, cutting or otherwise until the original length of dreadlock has already fully matured - for one so that it can't have an effect on the maturation of the rest of the dreadlock, but mainly because a lot of lumps and loops can resolve themselves in time. ...but if you're having lint build up inside the dreadlocks, that's probably something you'd want to look into trying to resolve as it can be a symptom of other issues: kzread.info/dash/bejne/o2F4tLKYdc3doZM.html

    Loops form when dreadlocks shrink quickly and unevenly - the looser part is pushed out by the tighter part. Over time the dreadlock will continue to tighten and loops can get pulled in. Loose hairs can also knot over the top of loops, also knotting them down. You may however find that even once mature, not all of the loops completely dissipate by themselves - the shrunken original length will usually be more lumpy and bumpy than the steady forming new growth. Some may then choose to crochet hook the loops in - though crocheting has it's own set of risks vs benefits.

    Rebecca Colby If your 'dread lady' thinks that dreadlocks are held together with dirt... you need a new 'dread lady'. Loops are related to washing... because when you wash the hair it encourages the dreadlocks to tighten - clean hair locks faster than dirty hair. If you stop washing the hair, you could stop the loops from forming... but only by stopping the dreadlocks from forming.

    Lazy Dreads I never said dirt holds dreads together, washing brand new dreads that have been "put in" is causing dreads to loosen, these are premature dreads that havent had time to "mature" or lock. what do you suggest she washes her premature dreads, that havent locked yet?

  • @LazyDreads

    @LazyDreads

    9 жыл бұрын

    Jade Garcia Dreadlocks take months to lock (and even longer if not kept clean)... so if you're going to wait for the dreadlocks to mature before you wash them... you're going to be waiting a very long time. Young dreadlocks will loosen when you wash them, yes... but that's because young dreadlocks are loose - they will loosen whether you wait 7 days to wash them or 7 months to wash them - you have to get through the loose stage at some point... most would prefer to get it over sooner with cleaner hair rather than slower with unwashed hair.

    Lazy Dreads yeah man I am definitely aware of how long they take to mature, and I know they will loosen when washed. she just washed a little too soon after putting them in, they loosened more then if they would have been given time to settle, got some loops quicker, I was saying what are you suggesting washing with? at this point they are washed its just a matter of maintenance, I have to say washing often( when still baby dreads; first few weeks) does loosen them more when they are new dreads, the process of washing I mean, and from a educated mind set washing your hair is only necessary every few days. As you even pointed out in another video, the more you wash the hair the more you tell your scalp it needs more oils. Along with that, your natural oils aren't bad for your hair or scalp.
