Thanks so much, Luis, for mentioning the work of George Bridgman in this lecture. His blend of influence (the hybrid style you refer to) carries the best of Italian and French academic approach... I respond well to his teachings since I was trained with a great deal of gesture drawing to begin with...I love that sense of life in form. As always, personal thanks to you for the generosity you show in the Art Spirit. You are a wonderful instructor.

You mention pencil and line and it brings to mind a favorite resource in the book The Pencil by Paul Calle. It is a fine line between illustration and fine art. His drawings are simple bold and seemingly unedited. One of my favorite museums is the Museum of Illustration in NYC back in the 90's, perhaps things have changed with modernity. Thank you for taking the time for this demo. Your work reminds me that I am a little heavy handed.

Hello, Maestro Borrero. I had this video in my list of pending things (with the old house I bought in the middle of nowhere in Germany I'm literally enslaved). I enjoyed it a lot as I enjoy all your videos. Outstanding content as always! If you allow me the kind comment: the drawing you made of your daughter is at the same time very beautiful and very illustrative. it is also very accurate and I feel that the very tiny "deviations" from accuracy come from the fact that you are drawing her and reflecting your own self. At the same time you are drawing your daughter you are drawing yourself (the chin, eyes and nose have a lot of yours). That reflection of oneself is also a profound and important part in arts. P.S. I got very touched about the fact that your child is so far in New York. She will grow very strong and with a very broad vision of life, but it made me remember when I was young and the situation with my two fathers far away (the biological one and the second husband of my mom who was an angel; now both are passed away), and I can just say "never stop telling her how much you love her". I couldn't avoid dropping some tears... or maybe it's just this German beer... hehehehe... thanks again for this amazing video!

hi luis i was so happy to find a new video from you .i enjoy learning from you so much i paint watercolors alot ive collected many sets ,my oild just sit under my bed i need to get them on canvas ,i just love paints and color so much ,ive been painting in acrylics for 27 years i see me painting all my life it makes a good life .no money for me i dont sell but ive given hundred of cards hand painted by me they save them .thank you for bieng here ,i love painting while watching your videos ,pigments are so fun

Great video as always. Could you talk a little more about what you mean when you talk about callygraphy and drawing? I don't believe I really understood

Calligraphy in drawing is meant as beautiful and gestural line work to describe forms.

very interesting live presentation about different drawing techniques! I was wondering what do you think of a more constructive method like Russian academic drawing style? I'm drawn to that style because it seems they teach you the fundamentals and anatomy. Are you gonna cover it after you are done with the other drawing styles?

Hello Bengurlie: Thank you for commenting. For now, I will be focusing on the classical academic styles. The Russian method as well as many other methods borrow from both the French and Italian schools. When I say Academic, I refer to the classical academies such as the first academy established in Florence in 1563, Accademia delle Arti del Disegno by Vasari. French Painter Charles le Brun established his own academy, Academie des Beaux-Arts by 1648. The Imperial Academy of Arts of the Russian Empire was established much later in 1757 modeled after European academies.

Important to mention! There’s a typo in my family tree of Artists. There’s no evidence to support that Titian studied with Leonardo Davinci however, he was influenced by Leonardo’s ideas.

Hi Luis, I followed the live video but my comment didn't seem to go through. Perhaps you can answer? - I watched your breakdown of Vermeer and the dead layer, I wondered, did Caravaggio also have a dead layer in his candlelit/dark and theatrical paintings or is this more used for daylight?
