Drawing on metal. How to make a vintage ax.
Ғылым және технология
The video shows an ax made of a construction pickaxe. Construction pickaxe was reforged blacksmith. I show how I make a drawing on metal in various ways. The video shows electrochemical etching of metal, acid etching of metal and blackening of metal. The purpose of the work was to make an ax in the style of a Viking or something like that.

Beautiful work!

If you still want to know a different way to do this. Take clear electrical tape. Cover the blade. Next draw/find a picture you want and print it, then trace the image onto the tape, and cut away either the negative or positive portions of the drawing. Then take either 2-3 9 volt batteries, or an old depleted car battery and hook the positive to the blade, and the negative into onto a metal rod that will be placed into a bucket of salt water. Now as you do it, make sure you don’t etch the beveled edge of you’re blade. It will weaken it. Wipe away some of the rust/metal and make sure you don’t etch more than you want. Then when you’re done buff the side you etched, and repeat on the other side. You can make extremely detailed drawings like his this way. With that said, Just be careful when it comes to electricity. I would suggest the 9 volt method if you’re not comfortable/confidently/safely able to use a larger battery Apparently I should watch the video before commenting. He did this method with the base etch at the start. Then the later one I suspect is the same thing but now dipping it into the glass. The second glass I think is just water to clean off some of the left over rust/etching material. It could be vinegar though to add a patina to the blade. As for the two containers he used one is blueing solution, and what looks to be grease for gears to add another level of rust protection.

@@lightshow366 What was the nail polish for? Also, what do you mean by "glass"? Sorry I'm new.
@lightshow366
3 жыл бұрын
@@chazly30 similar to when he used paint to draw his image onto the ax head, the nail polish is used to protect the image he drew. This later gets rubbed away when you sand away material at the end. As for glass, I'm referring to the glass jar he has full of what I would assume is either vinegar or water. (I can't read Russian, so I'm assuming it's vinegar) the vinegar is used to add a patina around the parts that don't have nail polish on them. This etches the design without nail polish. more, and lowers the surrounding design further into the blade Essentially you're making a "background". If you could see the height of the skull compared to the base of metal it would look like this. | | too | |. (Not to scale just an example) The other glass jar is full of water to clean the vinegar off of the metal. This etches the metal and gives it a patina to help prevent rust. Although him bluing the metal and adding gear grease at the end gives him pretty good protection as it is.
@chazly30
3 жыл бұрын
@@lightshow366 So the vinegar further etched it (which makes it look tinted) to give the appearance of shadowing? The parts with the nail polish where protected (keeping them shiny) which keeps those parts in the forefront giving the image its depth? I noticed he did that a couple times to give it layers. I'm assuming the time it spends in the dip as well as the concentrate of vinegar makes a difference also?

Fantastic work, is this your job or hobby? Very inspiring. Which knife steel is best for etching? Subscribed👍.
@KirillRunz
5 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I appreciate your attention. So far this is more of a hobby. Any knife is suitable for pickling. Best carbon steel knife. Stainless steel is well etched by electrochemical method. And carbon steels can be etched in acid and electrochemical methods. There are chrome-plated sheets. Chrome steel is etched well, but whimsically and unpredictably. There are a lot of variations. But etching can be done on almost any knife.
Looks great bro

Actually he did 9 months ago. 1. I pickle the metal so that the paint adheres well to it. You can also see this process in some of my other videos. 2. I paint metal. I use alkyd spray paint. 3. Transfer the drawing to the paint. I use a drawing film and a simple pencil. You can use food paper or matte film for lamination. 4. I scratch the drawing. 5. I do electrochemical etching of metal. 2: 49minutes - wrapping medical cotton on the electrode. I do metal etching in salt water. 6. I transfer the drawing. 3: 56 minutes, Scratch the contours of the picture. 7. 4:12 I wash the paint. I use solvent like acetone. 8. 4:33 Female nail polish. I use it to protect fragments of the pattern, in those places where the metal should not be etched. 9. 4:56 Metal etching in nitric acid 5%. 10. 5:11 Wash in water. 11. 5:18 Sanding with sandpaper. 12. I paint over nail polish for more fragments of the picture. And again I do metal etching in acid. 13. 6:01 I wash the nail polish. I use solvent like acetone. 14. 6:16 I blacken the metal. I use a special liquid for bluing. 15. 6:50 Wash in water. 16. I grind metal for the manifestation of the pattern. I do it with sanding paper. On the convex parts of the metal, the blackening is erased, and the drawing looks contrast. 17. I lubricate the metal with oil to protect against oxidation.
