The crown of an oak tree will fan out wide and often does so asymmetrically depending upon the direction and length the branches grow to and how old the tree is. You'll find plenty of examples of this in New Orleans, particularly in City Park and along the length of St. Charles Ave. once it gets past the Central Business District and starts following the course of the river, and at the Longvue and Destrehan plantations. Oaks will tend to grow toward one another, which is how we get a green canopy over both lanes of St. Charles, separated only by the neutral ground where the streetcar tracks run. Basically, you're drawing architect's trees and this is alright since you're not trying to obscure the buildings. The trunks are thick, in fact get very thick as the tree grows and develops a crown extending more than 20-40 feet in height.

I find the adding of grey value before color an interesting approach, and another technique I will borrow from your work, thanks Martin!

Hi Martin, lovely video + very helpful. Would you please consider exploring trees with different silhouettes like pine trees (so many varieties of coniferous trees!), palm trees + even banana trees (the leaves are quite different)? The shapes can be quite sculptural. Many thanks from Australia.

Hi Martin! First, just wanted to say that your art is incredible and I really appreciate your tutorial videos! Second, when you say "lift up" the watercolor, can you explain what you are doing? Are you using a dry brush to pick up the paint, essentially? Thanks buddy!

Hi Martin. I have been using the biggest brush I have, but it's too small. You mentioned in a previous video that you were using a size 6 and that looked ideal. Do you have a preferred shape of brush? Or, if you could only use one brush which would you recommend?

Das ist eine sogenannte ‘Fude’ nib - Japanese for brush - but it is not a brush, of course - the nib has a ‘bent’ shape, die es ermoeglicht senr duenn sowohl als mit breiten Linien zu schreiben und zeichnen - just search for ‘fountain pens with fude nib’ … I got two different brands several years ago on Amazon, here in Canada, too -
